You can turn a handful of sound pallet boards into a small, distinctive wall piece by treating the wood as a set of short art panels: choose a simple image or pattern, remove metal and dirt, cut boards to a planned layout, glue the pieces, and use a finish suited to the room or weather. The result depends less on the pallet’s label than on careful inspection and preparation. A mark can describe a regulated treatment, but it cannot tell you what the pallet carried or what happened to it afterward.

The workflow below combines the beginner mountain-scene approach shown by Axminster Tools with the cleaning, sanding, gluing, and staining sequence described by Sherwin-Williams. Those examples are useful models, not guarantees that every pallet, tool, adhesive, or finish will behave identically.

Pallet planks rarely match perfectly. Their widths, thicknesses, nail holes, grain direction, and weathering become part of the artwork, so begin by measuring the usable faces rather than drawing a final picture first. Lay the boards on a flat surface and note the smallest finished rectangle you can make without relying on cracked or badly cupped sections.

Simple images are more forgiving
A mountain silhouette, horizon, house, tree line, sun, or a few broad geometric bands can be reduced to shapes that survive uneven boards. The colorful mountain-scene tutorial from Axminster Tools uses cut strips, contrasting stains, and a straightforward silhouette; it is a practical starting point for a first piece. Avoid a detailed portrait or tiny lettering until you know how much movement and texture your boards contain.
Decide where the finished piece will live
Indoor art can retain more of the pallet’s dry, weathered character. An outdoor panel needs a finish whose label specifically allows exterior use, plus a mounting method that keeps the wood from sitting in standing water. Decide this before buying stain or sealer, because the intended location changes the preparation and coating steps.
Choose a pallet you can responsibly reuse
Reclaimed wood has an unknown service history. Do not use a pallet simply because it is free or carries a familiar-looking stamp. Reject boards with chemical or fuel odors, oily patches, unexplained sticky residue, extensive mold, deep rot, insect activity, or damage that leaves fibers crumbling under light pressure. A board with split ends, protruding fasteners, or severe twisting may be unsuitable for a small picture even if it could still carry a load in its original setting.

USDA APHIS describes the official ISPM 15 mark as containing the IPPC logo, a two-letter country code, a unique facility number, and a treatment code such as HT or MB. The mark concerns regulated wood packaging and helps inspectors identify compliant treatment; it does not identify the pallet’s cargo, cleaning history, later exposure, or contamination.
In the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s explanation of ISPM 15, HT means heat treatment to at least 56°C for at least 30 minutes. That is a phytosanitary requirement for raw wood packaging, not a household-safety certification. A used pallet can still be dirty, damaged, or inappropriate for an indoor project after treatment. If a board has no legible mark, or if its history is uncertain, make your decision from its present condition and intended use rather than assuming a treatment status.

If the mark shows MB, or if you cannot interpret the stamp, set the board aside while you obtain advice from the relevant agricultural or workplace-safety authority. Rules for imported packaging are jurisdictional, and the mark alone is not a release for every craft application.
Use pallet-safety guidance in the right context
The UK Health and Safety Executive’s PM15, Fourth edition (2014), addresses people responsible for pallet design, manufacture, purchase, and use in handling and storage. It is useful background for recognizing damaged pallets and unsafe fasteners, but it is not a craft-specific certification for reclaimed boards. Wear eye protection and gloves while inspecting, dismantling, cutting, and sanding; keep children and pets away from the work area.

There is no tested ranking of the “best” pallet-art method in the cited guides. Choose by the picture you want, the condition of your boards, the tools you have, and whether the piece will stay indoors.
| Route | Design and scale | Preparation and joining | Finish and setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color-block mountain scene | Small wall art made from short strips and broad colored shapes | Requires accurate repeat cuts and a dry layout; glue the strips to a backing or to neighboring pieces | Stain or other decorative colors; suited to an indoor wall unless the coating is labeled for exterior use |
| Geometric strip panel | Bars, chevrons, or a simple sunburst sized to the available boards | Uses the least demanding drawing; align edges, then glue and clamp in sections | One or several stains can emphasize grain; select the product for the room or weather exposure |
| Outdoor pallet wall treatment | Larger, more rustic arrangement assembled as a wall feature | More boards, more fastener removal, and more sanding; secure loose pieces before coating | Use an exterior stain or finish and mount with weather-appropriate hardware, following the product label |
Gather tools and materials
For the mountain-scene example, Axminster Tools lists a bandsaw, a chop saw, wood glue, stain, and brushes. Sherwin-Williams’ outdoor project list includes sanding sheets, wood glue, gloves, a brush, a canvas drop cloth, and exterior stain. Treat these as example lists, not mandatory brands or a universal bill of materials.

- Sound pallet boards, plus a spare board for test cuts.
- Eye protection, work gloves, hearing protection for powered saws, and a dust mask appropriate to your workspace.
- Pliers or a nail-pulling tool, a hammer, and a nail set for removing or sinking fasteners.
- A square, tape measure, pencil, straightedge, and cardboard for a full-size template.
- A bandsaw and chop saw if you have them and know how to use them. A handsaw with a suitable guide is an option for small work, but it is not a tested equivalent to the tools in the tutorial.
- Sandpaper or sanding sheets, a brush or vacuum for dust, wood glue, clamps, and a flat temporary work surface.
- Stain or paint for the design, followed by a finish labeled for the intended indoor or outdoor location.
- A canvas drop cloth and a way to support the piece while coatings dry.
Build the piece: a careful sequence
1. Photograph and measure before dismantling
Record the pallet’s original orientation and measure each board’s width and thickness. Mark boards with serious defects so they do not accidentally enter the design. Photographing the arrangement helps you understand which surfaces were exposed, but it does not establish a clean history.
2. Remove metal and decorative parts
Take off labels, bands, blocks, and other decorative or shipping items. Pull nails rather than twisting them through the face when possible. Sweep the work area frequently so loose points do not become hidden under sawdust. If a nail breaks, remove the remaining piece or sink it below the surface only when the board is otherwise sound and the location will not be cut away.

Sherwin-Williams’ project sequence washes and rinses the pallet, then allows it to dry before sanding. Use that as the order of operations, not as a universal drying interval. Keep the boards supported so air can reach both faces, and do not apply glue or stain while the wood still feels cool, damp, or tacky. Follow the coating manufacturer’s label for acceptable moisture and temperature conditions.
4. Sand only as much as the design needs
Knock down splinters, sharp corners, and rough patches first. You do not need to erase every saw mark or weathered line; those textures often provide the visual interest. Sand edges that will be handled or mounted more thoroughly than faces that will remain rustic. Remove dust before applying adhesive or color.

5. Make a full-size layout
Arrange the boards on cardboard or a flat bench. Mark the top edge, the intended width, and the location of every color boundary. Test the picture from the viewing distance at which it will hang. A small shift in one strip can change a mountain ridge or geometric repeat, so photograph the approved layout before moving pieces.
6. Cut in batches and check each fit
Use a square and a stop when making repeated cuts. The bandsaw and chop saw named in the Axminster tutorial are capable of repeatable work when operated according to their manuals; keep hands clear of blades and support short pieces. If you use a different saw, treat it as an option rather than assuming the tutorial’s results transfer automatically. Dry-fit every cut, trimming only after you confirm the grain direction and color placement.

Brush a thin, even coat of wood glue on clean mating edges or on the contact area specified by the adhesive label. Assemble a few pieces at a time, align the faces, and use clamps or temporary weights to prevent gaps. Wipe squeeze-out before it cures, but do not flood porous weathered wood. Sherwin-Williams also lists glue for securing loose pallet pieces; that step is particularly important on an outdoor arrangement.
8. Apply color after the glue has cured
Stain a test offcut first. Pallet boards absorb unevenly, and the same stain can look different on a fresh cut, a weathered face, and a previously exposed edge. Work in the grain direction and keep color boundaries intentional. If you are following the mountain-scene idea, reserve separate tones for sky, ridge, and foreground rather than trying to create detail with many tiny pieces.

9. Coat and let each layer dry according to its label
Sherwin-Williams’ project calls for stain and drying between coats. Do not copy a particular interval as a rule for every product, temperature, or humidity level. Read the label for recoat time, ventilation, cleanup, and exterior exposure. Support the art so wet surfaces do not touch the drop cloth, and inspect the underside before the final coat.
10. Mount without trapping moisture
For an indoor piece, use hardware rated for the wall type and the finished weight; a hanging wire or two-point hanger can keep a wide panel level. For an outdoor panel, use corrosion-resistant fasteners appropriate to the wall and leave a small drainage and air space behind the wood. Confirm that no nail, screw, or sharp edge projects from the back before hanging.

Indoor placement
Choose a stain, paint, or clear finish based on the appearance you want and the product’s indoor instructions. A low-sheen surface usually keeps weathered texture visible, while a stronger color contrast makes a simple silhouette easier to read. Ventilate during application and curing as the label directs.
Outdoor placement
Use a product explicitly labeled for exterior wood and apply it under the stated weather conditions. The outdoor pallet-wall example uses exterior stain, but that choice does not make every pallet durable outdoors. Avoid mounting where sprinklers, roof runoff, or soil can keep the bottom edge wet. Inspect the panel periodically for movement, lifted grain, loose joints, or coating failure, and repair or remove it if the wood becomes unstable.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Boards split when nails are pulled: stop forcing the fastener, support the board, and discard the section if the split reaches the planned glue line or hanger.
- The layout looks crooked: return to the cardboard template, establish one reference edge, and check every strip with a square before gluing.
- Stain turns blotchy: test on an offcut, sand only the affected area evenly, and follow the coating label for surface preparation rather than adding unlisted chemicals.
- Glue joints open: check that mating edges were dust-free and adequately clamped; remove failed glue mechanically after curing and reglue only on sound wood.
- The finished panel feels damp: postpone coating or hanging. Separate the boards for airflow and wait until the product’s application conditions are met.
- You find an unknown odor or residue: stop work and isolate the board. Do not attempt to conceal a possible contaminant with stain or paint.
What makes a pallet-art project successful
The strongest results come from matching ambition to material. A small, bold pattern tolerates irregular widths and nail holes; a finely detailed image demands straighter, cleaner stock and more precise cuts. Spend more time on inspection, layout, and dry fitting than on adding decorative complexity. Treat every mark, treatment code, and finish label as limited information: useful for a decision, never a substitute for examining the actual wood and the place where the art will be used.
The Bottom Line
Choose sound boards with a known present condition, remove every fastener and residue you can, wash and dry them, sand hazardous roughness, and test your layout before gluing. Use pallet marks only for what they establish about regulated treatment, then select stain, coating, and mounting hardware for the piece’s actual indoor or outdoor setting.
