To make new digital pictures with a film camera, you need a digital module designed for that exact camera; there is no universal conversion. The I’m Back Roll is a current direct-retrofit option, but its maker lists it as a pre-order with production and deliveries expected to begin in August–September 2027. If you want digital files from film you have already shot, use a scanning setup or a lab instead.
Which route makes sense depends on whether you want to keep shooting with the film-camera body or digitize exposed negatives. Those are different workflows, with different equipment and availability considerations.

First, define “turning a film camera digital”
There are two main workflows to distinguish:

How a direct digital retrofit works
A direct retrofit places a digital capture module in or on a compatible film camera so that the camera’s lens can form an image on its sensor. Compatibility depends on the specific camera design and the module; a product described as fitting many 35mm cameras is not necessarily compatible with every model.
Before ordering, verify the exact camera body and ask the maker about shutter operation and any camera-specific limitations. Treat specifications and compatibility statements as manufacturer claims unless independently tested. Do not assume that a pre-order listing means the product has shipped or been tested in the field.
Current direct-conversion option
I’m Back Roll
The manufacturer describes I’m Back Roll as a digital module for many 35mm cameras that does not require permanent modification. Its product page lists a 26.1MP Sony APS-C sensor, RAW and JPEG capture, 4K video, wireless connectivity, and storage options. These are maker-stated specifications, not independently verified performance findings.

The product page currently lists Roll as a pre-order and says production and deliveries are expected to begin in August–September 2027. That is a substantial wait, and the schedule is not a guarantee of delivery. Check the live product page, exact-body compatibility information, return terms, and delivery conditions before committing.
Earlier I’m Back Film
I’m Back Film is a different, earlier product. The manufacturer describes it as a 20MP module for the 35mm film chamber, but its current product page says it is out of stock. It may be useful as background on the product line, but do not treat it as an available alternative without confirming current stock.
Its Kickstarter campaign recorded 898 backers and CHF 493,784 pledged against a CHF 25,000 goal, according to the campaign page. Those are campaign figures; they do not establish current inventory, compatibility, or delivery for a new purchase.
What to check before choosing a module
- Confirm the exact camera model against the module maker’s compatibility information.
- Ask how the camera’s shutter works with the module and whether any operating limitations apply.
- Check the current order status, stated delivery schedule, warranty, and return terms.
- Compare the full cost with alternatives, including any camera-specific parts or accessories.
- Wait for independent hands-on reviews if you need proven performance before buying.
Do not permanently alter a valuable or collectible camera based on a generic compatibility claim. Follow the maker’s documented instructions for the exact model.

Digitize film you have already shot
If you have exposed negatives or slides, use a separate digital camera-scanning setup or a professional lab. Camera scanning photographs the film, after which the files need inversion and processing—especially for color negatives. This workflow creates files from existing film; it does not let the film camera make new digital exposures.
Camera-scanning setup
A camera-scanning system needs a digital camera, a true 1:1 macro lens, a way to hold the film flat, suitable illumination, and software for inversion and processing. If you already own the camera and macro lens, a compact scanning accessory may be convenient; otherwise, include those items and software in the total cost.

Check current prices, stock, kit contents, and compatibility before buying. These are scanning accessories, not digital camera conversions.

- Capture the frames with the digital camera.
- Invert negatives and adjust color and tone in suitable software.
- Save processed files in the formats you need.
A 2008 paper in the Society for Imaging Science and Technology proceedings reported equivalent results to conventional scanning in its tests using high-megapixel DSLR cameras of 16+ megapixels. This is an attributed finding from that paper, not a guarantee for every camera, lens, film, or workflow.

Professional scanning
A lab can be practical if you have a small archive, do not want to assemble scanning equipment, or want help handling originals. Before sending film, confirm the service’s resolution, file formats, color treatment, turnaround, handling procedures, and return policy. Prices and service terms vary, so check current information directly with the provider.
