Yes—you can use Polaroid 600 film in an SX-70 by reducing the light that reaches the film with a neutral-density (ND) filter. The simplest reversible option is a film-pack filter fitted over each 600 cartridge before loading; a lens filter or a specialist electronic conversion are alternatives.
Why an SX-70 needs an ND filter for 600 film
The SX-70 was designed for less light-sensitive film than 600 film. An ND filter reduces the light reaching the film, making the faster 600 film usable in the camera. Polaroid says its filter was developed for this purpose: “The Polaroid neutral density filter was developed to use faster-speed 600 film in Polaroid SX-70 cameras.” The support article, credited to Patrick, was updated August 31, 2023.

Either reduces exposure; they differ in where the filter sits and how it affects handling and the viewfinder.
Fit an ND filter to each 600 film pack
This is the direct method if you want to keep the camera itself unchanged. Polaroid’s pack-filter instructions say to install the compatible filter over the cartridge’s darkslide before inserting the pack into the camera.
#1 Best Overall
- TRIPLE PACK: 24 instant photos rich in dreamlike, nostalgic texture and tone.
- LIGHT IT UP: Polaroid Instant Film loves light. The more light in your shot, the better your photo will turn out. Always shoot in bright light or use the camera flash
- DEVELOP: All photos appear blank at first. Photos develop within 15 minutes. Shield photos from the light and place them face down as they develop
- CREATE: Every photo you create is rich textured and unique. Unpredictable, imperfect, and impossible to reproduce.
- STORE CHILLED: Temperature affects how the film works so keep it stored chilled in the fridge, do not freeze.
- Take one film-pack ND filter. It has two long flaps and six small flaps.
- Place the filter over the cartridge, on top of the darkslide. Point the two long flaps toward the photo-ejection slot.
- Push the six small flaps under the rim of the cartridge.
- Leave the two long flaps outside the cartridge. They help hold the filter in place and keep it from ejecting with the darkslide or a photograph.
- Insert the prepared pack into the camera, following the camera’s normal loading procedure.
Polaroid explains that an ND filter reduces light without adding a color cast because it reduces wavelengths equally. With a pack filter, the reduction happens at the cartridge rather than across the lens, so it does not darken the viewfinder while you compose.
Compare the available conversion methods
| Method | What changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Film-pack ND filter | Add a compatible filter to each 600 cartridge before loading. | The camera remains unchanged and the viewfinder stays bright, but you must handle a filter whenever you load a new pack. |
| Lens ND filter | Fit an ND filter to the lens so less light enters the camera. | It avoids fitting a filter to every cartridge, but the viewfinder appears darker and focusing may be harder. |
| Electronic conversion | Modify or replace exposure electronics so the camera meters or controls exposure for 600 film. | It can avoid adding an ND filter for each pack, but requires specialist hardware and model-specific checks. |
Polaroid explains the difference between pack-level and lens-level filtration in its neutral-density filter guide. Its MiNT SX-70 lens-set listing is a packaged lens-accessory option; only one lens in the set is intended for using 600 film. The available sources do not establish that one method produces better photographs than another.

When to consider electronic conversion
An electronic conversion is a different undertaking from adding an ND filter. The SX70R version 4.0 and 6.0 modification manual documents its ECM system, includes a model-specific note for the SLR 680, and gives a functional check sequence. It says the shutter speed should respond to changes in light and recommends checks using an empty 600 pack. It also gives instructions about removing the original metering ND filter after that system is installed.
Those instructions apply to the specified SX70R hardware; they are not a universal DIY conversion procedure for every folding SX-70. The manual is not a Polaroid endorsement. Do not treat removing the small metering-window filter on its own as a complete 600-film conversion. If you pursue an electronic modification, confirm that the hardware and instructions match your camera model and that the finished camera passes the conversion’s functional checks.

Do not confuse exposure compensation with a 600 conversion
Polaroid’s exposure-compensation guidance concerns SX-70-type film, not a method for converting the camera to 600 film. Its recommendation to move the dial one third toward darken for SX-70 film should not be substituted for the 600-film ND-filter method.

- For a reversible, no-repair approach: use a compatible pack filter and fit it to every 600 cartridge as described above.
- If you prefer a lens accessory: a lens ND filter is an option, with a darker composing view and potentially more difficult focusing.
- If you want an internal modification: use instructions and hardware specific to your camera model, and treat installation and calibration as specialist work.
