A manual yarn ball winder turns yarn into a center-pull ball. Clamp it to a sturdy surface, guide the yarn through the winder, secure the end, and crank steadily. If you’re winding an open hank, first place it on a yarn swift or another suitable support; winding a loose hank directly can tangle it. A swift is optional when rewinding many center-pull skeins.
What a yarn ball winder does
A ball winder arranges yarn into a center-pull ball, so you can draw yarn from the middle as you knit or crochet. It is especially useful for converting hanks or awkward skeins into a form that is easier to store and work from.
How to use a manual ball winder
- Secure the winder. Clamp it firmly to a sturdy table or counter edge. Check that the clamp fits the surface and that the winder cannot shift while you crank.
- Prepare the yarn. For an open hank, untwist and arrange it on a swift or another suitable support so it can unwind freely. Some center-pull skeins can be wound without a swift.
- Thread and secure the yarn. Feed the yarn through the winder’s guide, then place its end in the cleft or groove on the bobbin. Assembly and guide details vary, so follow the instructions for your model.
- Wind steadily. Turn the crank at a consistent pace while keeping the yarn’s path smooth. If a tangle forms, stop and clear it before continuing rather than cranking through it.
- Remove the ball carefully. Pull out the center lead before lifting the ball from the bobbin, which helps keep the working end accessible. Stanwood’s YBW-A instructions specify turning the crank clockwise; check your own model’s manual for its direction and setup.
Knit Picks’ ball-winder and swift tutorial warns that winding a hank directly can tangle it, while allowing an equivalent support instead of a swift. Its guidance also notes that a center-pull skein can be wound without a swift.

Do you need a yarn swift?
It depends on the yarn’s format. A hank is an open loop that needs to be held in shape while it unwinds; a swift provides that support and turns as yarn is drawn off. Without a swift, use another arrangement that supports the loop and lets it unwind freely. Do not place an unsupported hank directly on the winder. For a center-pull skein, a swift is not always necessary.

What to compare when choosing a winder
Two practical checks are whether the maker-stated winding capacity suits the yarn quantities you expect to wind and whether the clamp fits your work surface. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent capacity tests.

Choose by comparing the size of the yarn packages you expect to wind, how often you will wind yarn, your table thickness, and whether you regularly work with hanks. A swift-and-winder set can make sense if you need both tools; if you mainly rewind center-pull skeins, you may not need the swift. These specifications do not establish which model is more durable, quieter, or better value, and they are not a basis for ranking real-world performance.
