Use Illustrator’s AI tools according to the job: Text to Vector Graphic creates editable vector artwork from a prompt, Generative Shape Fill adds artwork inside a selected outline, and Generative Expand extends a composition. Other tools generate patterns, recolor existing artwork, convert raster input, edit generated artwork, or assist with text. Availability and controls vary, so check Adobe’s current documentation and your in-app options.
Generative AI features require an internet connection. Adobe says access is available where it provides services except mainland China; your plan, account, and selected object can also affect what you see. Check the in-app credit indicator and your Adobe account for your own credit allocation and entitlements.
What does “AI in Illustrator” mean?
Illustrator’s generative features use Adobe Firefly and, for selected features, partner models. Generative features can create or modify artwork from prompts, while other tools assist with tasks such as rewriting text. Not every AI-assisted feature creates vector artwork: for example, Concept to Vector converts raster input into editable vector art, while Rewrite handles text tasks.
These tools do not replace ordinary Illustrator work. You remain responsible for paths, typography, alignment, color, accessibility, prepress, and production quality. Traditional tools such as Image Trace and pattern tools should not automatically be described as generative AI.

Feature names, model choices, and controls can change. Adobe’s Illustrator generative AI FAQ and release notes are the best places to check the current feature map. Some options may be unavailable or grayed out for particular selections or accounts.
Before you start
- Update Illustrator through the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Sign in and confirm that your account and plan provide access to the feature you want.
- Make sure you have an internet connection; Adobe says generative AI features require one.
- Save a duplicate of your document before experimenting.
- Select eligible artwork. Unsupported or locked objects can make controls unavailable.
- Check the in-app credit indicator and your Adobe account for applicable credit details.
Credit use depends on feature and plan. Adobe says most standard generations use one credit, while some use more; eligible plans may include unlimited standard generations. Adobe also says it will not charge automatically for additional credits unless you choose to buy them. Check Adobe’s credit guidance and your account rather than assuming all generations have the same cost.
Generate a vector illustration from text
Use Text to Vector Graphic when you want to create a scene, subject, or icon from an idea. Adobe’s current documentation describes editable vector output; available models and options can vary.

- Open the Generative controls or the Text to Vector Graphic feature from the available context-sensitive controls.
- Enter a descriptive prompt that specifies the subject, composition, style, palette, and constraints.
- Choose the kind of result you want, such as a scene, subject, or icon, where those options are available.
- Review the generated variations and select a direction to refine.
- Inspect and edit the resulting vector artwork with Illustrator’s regular tools.
A useful prompt might be: “Flat geometric vector icon of a vintage camping lantern, front-facing and centered, thick navy outline, cream body, burnt-orange highlights, three-color palette, simple logo-friendly shapes, no text.” Describing the intended visual result is more useful than entering only a broad subject. Replace generated lettering with properly typeset text and verify it before delivery.

Fill a shape with Generative Shape Fill
Generative Shape Fill creates artwork within a selected outline. Adobe documents support for open and closed paths, basic shapes, grouped objects, and compound paths; multiple shapes can also be selected. The original shape remains independent, and the generated result is a Generative Object with linked variations.
- Create or select a suitable outline.
- Open Generative Shape Fill from the Contextual Task Bar or another available entry point such as Object > Generative.
- Enter a concise prompt to guide the content, or leave it blank to let the outline guide the fill.
- Adjust Shape Strength to control how closely the result follows the outline and Detail to guide the amount of detail.
- Optionally apply a style reference or available color controls. Controls can differ by model; Adobe notes that style reference is unavailable for partner models.
- Generate and compare the variations in the available panel.
- Keep the result that best fits the artwork, then refine or regenerate as needed.
“Vector” does not mean “production-ready.” Inspect the output for excess paths, irregular shapes, clipping, or unnecessary detail before delivery.
If you draw custom outlines, a pen tablet such as Wacom Intuos is optional. It can support drawing with pressure-sensitive Illustrator tools, but it is not required for generative features and does not power or improve them. Check the current model’s compatibility and size options with Wacom.

Use Generative Expand when a composition needs more space or continuation beyond its current boundary. The selected composition must meet the feature’s object requirements; consult Adobe’s current controls and guidance if the feature is unavailable for your selection.

- Select eligible artwork and open Generative Expand from the available Generative controls.
- Adjust the expansion boundary as needed.
- Enter a prompt describing a specific continuation, or leave it blank if the available workflow supports a natural continuation.
- Start generation and review the returned alternatives.
- Select the result that best matches the original composition and inspect it for continuity and editability.
Recolor vector artwork with AI
Generative Recolor applies prompt-guided color changes to existing artwork; it is not a way to create an illustration from scratch.
- Select the artwork you want to recolor.
- Open Generative Recolor from the available menu or Generative controls.
- Describe the palette or visual direction, such as “muted coastal palette.”
- Generate and compare alternatives using the controls available in your version.
- Refine the selected result with Illustrator’s color-editing tools.
Other generative workflows
- Text to Pattern: creates editable repeating patterns from a prompt.
- Concept to Vector: converts raster input, such as a sketch or photo, into editable vector artwork.
- Prompt to Edit: uses instructions to add, remove, recolor, or replace elements in eligible generated artwork.
- Rewrite: assists with rephrasing, proofreading, translation, or resizing selected text.
Partner models are available only for selected features, and the model menu and controls differ by workflow. Check Adobe’s partner-model overview for the current feature-specific support matrix.
Prompts and finishing work
Prompts work best when they describe the desired visual result and constraints. For example:
- Icon: “Simple flat vector icon of [subject], centered, front-facing, thick consistent outline, [palette], no text.”
- Illustration: “Editorial vector illustration of [subject] in [setting], clean contours, [palette], balanced negative space.”
- Shape fill: “[subject] contained inside the selected silhouette, cohesive flat vector style, minimal detail, [palette].”
- Recolor: “Use a restrained [colors] palette with clear foreground and background separation.”
After generating, duplicate and preserve the original, remove unwanted details, correct curves and alignment, standardize strokes and colors, replace generated text, and organize layers. Check output settings for the intended use. For logos, packaging, and brand assets, manual vector judgment and review matter more than the prompt alone.

Access, credits, and commercial use
Adobe says most standard generative features use one credit per generation, but some use more. Credit allocation and access vary by plan. The in-app indicator and Adobe account are the reliable checks for your own entitlement. Adobe’s generative AI FAQ says its features are “designed to be safe for commercial use.” That statement is Adobe’s limited description, not a guarantee of copyright ownership, clearance, or a particular legal outcome.
Review each output and check relevant client, employer, marketplace, and jurisdiction requirements before commercial release. Avoid copying protected brands, characters, or logos unless you have the necessary rights or authorization, and verify names and symbols before using them.
Troubleshooting Illustrator AI tools
