On the Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung’s Drawing Assist turns a rough doodle or an annotation on a photo into AI-generated artwork. Depending on your One UI version, the same capability may be labelled Sketch to image, AI Drawing, or Creative studio. You can start it with Air Command, the Edge panel, Samsung Notes, Samsung Gallery, or the newer central Drawing assist panel.

Use a finger or a compatible S Pen, choose a visual style, tap Generate, then swipe through the variations to save, share, or insert one. The result is an interpretation of your sketch—not a pixel-perfect conversion.

Before you start

  • Install the latest update from Settings > Software update > Download and install.
  • Sign in to your Samsung account and connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Samsung requires both for the network-based generation service.
  • Look in Settings > Galaxy AI for Drawing Assist or a related enable switch. The menu can move after an update.
  • Drawing Assist is documented on select Galaxy devices running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 through Android 16 with One UI 8.0; availability still varies by software version, language, region, device and account. See Samsung’s support details.
  • An S Pen is optional. Finger input works in supported Notes, Gallery and other workflows; an S Pen is more precise for tracing and small selections.

Samsung says Galaxy AI basic features are free, but enhanced or third-party AI features can have separate terms or fees. Generated images include a watermark.

Which method should you use?

Air Command Drawing from a blank canvas with an S Pen Drawing assist or Sketch to image
Edge panel Annotating something already on screen AI select or Smart select, then Sketch to image
Samsung Notes Keeping the generated illustration in a note Notes Assist > Creative studio > Generate image, or Sketch to image
Gallery Adding an object or sketch to an existing photo Photo Assist > Create or Sketch to image
Newer One UI Drawing assist panel Switching among sketch, restyle and text generation Sketch to image, Restyle image, or Text to image

Samsung has changed names and locations across One UI releases, so look for these equivalent labels rather than one guaranteed menu. The original Fold6 software commonly called the feature Sketch to image; current support pages often call it Drawing assist.

Use Air Command with an S Pen

  1. Remove or activate your compatible S Pen.
  2. Tap the Air Command icon.
  3. Choose Drawing assist or Sketch to image.
  4. Draw the subject. A clear outline—a flower, dog, character or object—is easier for the model to interpret than a dense scribble.
  5. Choose a style at the bottom of the screen. Samsung lists Watercolor, Illustrations, Pencil sketch, 3D cartoon and Pop art; a drop-down may contain the selector on some versions.
  6. Tap Generate.
  7. Swipe left or right through the generated variations.
  8. Use the top controls to save, share, or redo the drawing.

Samsung’s official walkthrough is available on YouTube. Older demonstrations may show Samsung Internet, while newer builds expose the same capability in several system apps.

Use the Edge panel and AI select

  1. Swipe inward from the Edge panel handle on the right side of the display.
  2. Tap AI select or Smart select. Samsung renamed Smart select to AI select on devices updated to One UI 6.1.1 and later.
  3. Select an item or area on the screen.
  4. Tap Sketch to image.
  5. Draw over or beside the selected content with a finger or S Pen.
  6. Use the available pencil and color controls, eraser, undo, redo and restart. Depending on the build, you can also use layers, transparency, save, share, copy, or minimize from the three-dot menu.
  7. Pick a style, tap Generate, then swipe through the results.

This route is useful when the source material is already visible in another app and you want to add a drawn object without opening Notes or Gallery.

Generate an image inside Samsung Notes

  1. Open Samsung Notes and create or open a note.
  2. Draw in an empty area with your finger or S Pen.
  3. Tap the Notes Assist icon (three stars).
  4. Choose Creative studio > Generate image or Sketch to image. The wording depends on the software version.
  5. If prompted, trace around the drawing to select it.
  6. For Generate image, enter a text description and choose a style. For Sketch to image, select a style from the menu.
  7. Tap Generate and swipe through the variations.
  8. Insert the preferred result into the note, drag it into position, then tap Back to save.

Add a generated object to a Gallery photo

  1. Open Gallery and select a photo.
  2. Tap the Photo Assist icon (three stars).
  3. Choose Create or Sketch to image, depending on the build.
  4. Draw the object or shape where it should appear, using approximately the size and position you want.
  5. Tap Generate and swipe through the variations.
  6. Tap Save copy to keep the original photo unchanged.

If Sketch to image is absent from Photo Assist, look for Drawing Assist under Settings > Galaxy AI. Samsung’s Photo Assist guidance notes that this setting may be required.

Drawing Assist on newer One UI versions

  1. Open the Edge panel.
  2. Tap Drawing assist.
  3. Choose Sketch to image, Restyle image, or, where offered, Text to image.
  4. Draw or select an image. If using text generation, enter a description.
  5. Choose a style and tap Generate.

This centralized interface is described in Samsung’s One UI 7 support page; its controls can differ from launch-era Fold6 screenshots.

What the controls do

  • Style selector: changes the visual treatment.
  • Generate: sends the sketch or description for AI processing.
  • Undo, redo and eraser: correct the current drawing.
  • Restart: clears the canvas so you can begin again.
  • Layers and transparency: blend a drawing with selected screen content where supported.
  • Save and Share: store the result or send it to another app.
  • Redo drawing: returns to the drawing stage for another generation.
  • Save copy: exports a Gallery edit separately from the original.

Most workflows produce several variations that you browse by swiping.

How to get more useful results

  • Make the main silhouette large and unmistakable.
  • Add defining features such as eyes and ears, wheels, windows or leaves.
  • Use a simple background when starting from a blank canvas.
  • For a photo edit, draw the added object in its intended position and approximate scale.
  • Try styles deliberately: Pencil sketch and 3D cartoon can interpret the same outline very differently.
  • If the output ignores the subject, simplify the sketch, remove clutter and generate again. More marks do not necessarily produce more accurate results.
  • When using Creative studio or Text to image, describe the subject as well as drawing it.
  • Use the unfolded inner display for more comfortable sketching when the app allows it.

Finger or S Pen?

Input Advantages Limitations
Finger Always available; good for broad shapes and casual doodles Less precise for small details and tracing
Compatible S Pen Controlled lines and more accurate selections Optional accessory; not included in every Fold6 package or region

Samsung documents finger drawing in several entry points, so an S Pen is not a universal requirement.

Fix missing or non-working Drawing Assist

  1. Install the latest update through Settings > Software update > Download and install.
  2. Confirm that the phone is a Galaxy Z Fold6 on a supported Android and One UI combination.
  3. Sign in to your Samsung account.
  4. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  5. Look under Settings > Galaxy AI for Drawing Assist and enable it if present.
  6. Update Samsung Notes, Gallery and Samsung Internet from the Galaxy Store or Play Store.
  7. Open Edge panel settings and enable AI select or Smart select.
  8. If using an S Pen, check Air Command settings.
  9. Restart the phone and try another entry point.

If generation fails, the likely causes include a temporary service problem, unsupported language or region, an outdated app, disabled Galaxy AI controls, or content that the selected app does not support. Samsung lists network, account, language and service-availability requirements in its One UI 8 feature guide.

Older instructions that mention only Sketch to image are not necessarily wrong; the function may now be called Drawing assist, AI Drawing, or Creative studio. Samsung’s Fold6 and Flip6 documentation explains the One UI 6.1.1 naming context at Samsung Support.

Limitations and privacy considerations

Drawing Assist is a generative image tool, not a professional illustration application. It does not promise exact proportions, colors or composition, and it does not replace a full drawing app with extensive brush libraries and manual control.

Generation requires a network connection and Samsung account, so do not assume processing is entirely on the phone. Avoid submitting confidential or personally identifying material unless you understand Samsung’s current privacy terms. Samsung marks AI-generated artwork and photos with a watermark; its Galaxy AI rollout information also notes that availability can vary by market and language.

For detailed prompt control, repeated revisions, higher-resolution exports or advanced compositing, a separate image-generation application may offer more options, but it will involve another service’s app, terms and possible usage charges.
