Glosswood timber lining boards are prefinished Paulownia boards for creating a continuous timber surface on interior walls, ceilings and selected protected exterior areas. Their V-joint tongue-and-groove profile, two board widths and range of matte or satin colours let you control both the visual rhythm and the colour of a room without applying a finish on site.

The most important decisions are practical as well as aesthetic: choose the correct width and sheen, confirm that the location is genuinely protected from weather, check the required fire documentation, and follow the finish-specific installation guide. Proper acclimatisation, a straight substrate and sealed cut ends are essential to a durable result.

What Glosswood timber lining boards are

Glosswood’s GW Studio Series Lining Boards are made from Paulownia timber and machined with a V-joint tongue-and-groove profile. The boards interlock along their long edges to form a lined surface, while the V-joint creates a deliberate shadow line between boards. This gives a wall or ceiling a regular, panelled rhythm rather than the appearance of a flat sheet material.

The boards are prefinished, so the colour and sheen are applied before delivery. That reduces on-site coating work, but it does not remove the need to protect the finish during installation or to reseal areas that are cut. The manufacturer sells the boards in packs of ten lengths and offers matching trim within its product range.

Paulownia has a relatively light, even appearance, but it remains natural timber: grain, tone and small differences between boards are expected. Glosswood notes that its material figures are indicative and can vary by board and batch. Any sample should therefore be treated as a guide to the finish, not a promise that every delivered board will look identical.

Where the boards can be used

Interior walls

Interior walls are the most straightforward application. A lined wall can add a warm, directional surface behind a bed, sofa, dining area or reception desk, or it can be used across an entire room. The narrow 90 mm option creates more frequent joints; the 130 mm option produces a broader, quieter pattern.

Interior ceilings

The product is also specified for ceilings. Ceiling lining can make a large plane feel more detailed and can visually connect separate spaces when the same boards continue from a wall onto the ceiling. Ceiling work is less forgiving than wall work because joints and fixing lines are visible from below, so the supporting surface must be accurately level and the layout should be planned before any boards are cut.

Protected exterior areas

Glosswood identifies the boards for protected exterior areas as well as residential and commercial interiors. “Protected” is a meaningful limitation: the product should not be described as unrestricted, fully weather-exposed cladding. An enclosed porch, soffit or sheltered outdoor room may be suitable, but exposure to driving rain, persistent damp, direct weathering or unsuitable condensation conditions requires a project-specific assessment.

Before ordering for an exterior location, confirm the construction details, ventilation, moisture conditions, local requirements and the current manufacturer guidance with the responsible building professional. Interior suitability does not automatically establish suitability for every outdoor location.

Board sizes and the visual effect of each width

Nominal board size Stated coverage How it reads on a surface
90 mm × 9 mm × 3600 mm 86 mm More frequent V-joints and a finer linear rhythm
130 mm × 10 mm × 3600 mm 125 mm Wider boards and a more open, calmer rhythm

Coverage is narrower than the nominal board width because the tongue-and-groove joint overlaps. Use the stated coverage when estimating quantities, not the nominal width. Allow for waste, openings, corners and the layout of end joints; a qualified installer can calculate the order once the actual room dimensions and pattern are known.

Colours, sheen and natural variation

The range includes matte and satin finishes. Named colour choices listed by Glosswood include Blackbutt, Cedar, Spotted Gum, Tasmanian Oak, Teak, Walnut, White Oak and White. The names indicate the intended colour character, not a guarantee of a uniform tone across every length.

Glosswood cautions that natural colour and grain vary. Screen images and small samples can also make a finish appear different from a full wall under your home’s lighting. Request samples, view them in the room at different times of day, and inspect the delivered packs before installation. If the boards will be used across adjoining walls or a ceiling, open and distribute packs so that noticeable variation is balanced rather than concentrated in one area.

Matte or satin?

A matte finish generally gives a softer, less reflective appearance and can make the grain look understated. Satin reflects more light and may read as slightly brighter or more polished. Neither sheen is inherently right for every room; the choice depends on lighting, the desired contrast with painted surfaces and how much visual emphasis you want on the timber.

Finish-specific installation and maintenance instructions matter. Do not assume that a procedure written for matte boards can be substituted for the satin guide, particularly for cut-end treatment or touch-up work.

Specification points to confirm before you order

Profile and construction

  • Paulownia timber construction.
  • V-joint tongue-and-groove profile.
  • Boards supplied in 3600 mm lengths in the two listed widths.
  • Glosswood states that each board has a subtle central lamination join; this is part of the product description and should be considered when inspecting boards and planning visible areas.

Fire information

The product page states a Group 3 fire rating and directs customers to Glosswood for certification documents. Treat that web-page summary as an indication, not as a substitute for the certificate required for your project. Building classification, location, substrate, insulation, cavity construction and local regulations can affect what evidence is needed. Obtain the current certification and have the project designer or building surveyor confirm compliance before specification.

Material figures

Glosswood gives an indicative density of 260–280 kg/m³ and a Janka hardness of 1.3–1.4 kN. The manufacturer describes these as representative estimates that can vary with the timber. They are useful for general context, but they should not be treated as universal engineering values or as a replacement for project-specific structural advice.

How to install the lining boards

The following sequence reflects Glosswood’s matte installation guidance and the related satin guidance. Use the current guide for the exact finish and application, and have the installer confirm fixing details for the substrate.

  1. Inspect before fixing. Check every pack for transport damage, finish irregularities and boards that are unsuitable for a prominent location. Do this before cutting or installing; once boards are fixed, replacement is more difficult.
  2. Acclimatise the boards. Condition them in the installation environment for two to three days. Expose all surfaces to the room’s temperature and humidity rather than leaving the boards tightly wrapped in a way that prevents air circulation. This allows the timber to adjust before it is restrained by the fixings.
  3. Prepare a flat, straight support. The guide calls for fixing to a flat, straight surface. Existing walls and ceilings may require battens to create a suitable plane and to provide a reliable fixing base. Resolve moisture, movement and unevenness before the lining is installed.
  4. Plan the layout. Decide the starting edge, direction of the boards, position of visible end joints and treatment of corners, openings and service penetrations. Dry planning helps avoid a narrow, awkward strip at the final edge and lets you distribute natural colour variation.
  5. Gather the specified equipment. The manufacturer lists a brad gun and brad nails, polyurethane adhesive, a fine-tooth saw, measuring and layout tools, and appropriate protective equipment. Confirm nail type, length, spacing and adhesive compatibility for the actual substrate and the current guide; those details should not be guessed from a different lining system.
  6. Fix the first board accurately. The first course controls every following joint. Set it straight, leave any required perimeter movement allowance and use the fixing method specified for the substrate. A small error at the start can become a visible wedge or misalignment across the room.
  7. Interlock subsequent boards. Engage the tongue and groove without forcing damaged edges. Keep joints tight and maintain the planned direction. Use the adhesive and concealed brad fixing arrangement described in the relevant guide, rather than adding visible fasteners that are not part of the system.
  8. Seal fresh cuts and end joints. Glosswood’s matte guidance requires freshly cut ends and end joints to be sealed to limit moisture ingress. The satin guidance also stresses end-sealing, with finish-specific instructions. Seal every cut end and joint that the applicable guide identifies, including pieces around openings and at terminations.
  9. Protect the completed surface. Keep tools, ladders and building debris from abrading the prefinished face. Clean according to the finish instructions and complete trims or junctions so that unprotected edges are not left exposed.

Substrate, movement and moisture considerations

Timber responds to changes in temperature and humidity. Acclimatisation reduces the risk of installing boards at one moisture condition and then asking them to adjust after they are fixed, but it cannot compensate for a damp substrate or uncontrolled moisture. Investigate leaks, condensation and ventilation before lining a wall or ceiling.

Battens are particularly useful on existing surfaces because they can create a straight fixing plane and a service cavity. Their spacing, orientation and fixing must be designed for the board system and the structure behind it. For ceilings, check the load path and fixing into appropriate structural members; do not rely on adhesive alone unless the manufacturer and responsible professional approve that method for the specific condition.

End joints deserve special attention. A board can look sealed along its face while an unsealed cut exposes end grain at a corner, opening or joint. That end grain can take up moisture more readily, which is why the guides call for sealing freshly cut ends and end joints.

Planning the visual design

Choose direction deliberately

Horizontal boards can make a wall appear wider, while vertical boards draw the eye upward. Continuing the same direction onto a ceiling can create a coherent envelope; changing direction at a transition can define separate zones. Mark the intended direction on the layout before ordering so the 3600 mm lengths and joints work with the room rather than against it.

Coordinate colour with fixed elements

Compare samples with flooring, cabinetry, painted walls, metalwork and daylight. A warm brown such as Walnut or Teak can become a strong feature, while White or White Oak can keep the lining lighter. Blackbutt, Cedar, Spotted Gum and Tasmanian Oak offer different timber-inspired tones, but natural variation means the installed result will contain more nuance than a single colour chip.

Use joints as part of the design

The V-joint is not merely a construction detail; it is the repeated graphic element of the room. Narrow boards produce more lines and can suit a detailed feature wall. Wider boards reduce the number of lines and may work better where the timber itself should remain the background. Centre lamination joins and end joints should be arranged so that unavoidable seams look intentional.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Using the boards in an exposed location: confirm that the area meets the manufacturer’s definition of protected exterior use.
  • Skipping acclimatisation: allow two to three days in the installation environment with surfaces exposed to the room.
  • Fixing over an uneven wall: straighten the substrate or install an appropriate batten system first.
  • Ordering by nominal width: calculate quantities using 86 mm or 125 mm stated coverage, then add a realistic allowance for cuts and waste.
  • Mixing finish instructions: follow the matte or satin guide that matches the boards you bought.
  • Leaving cut ends unsealed: seal fresh cuts and end joints as required to reduce moisture ingress.
  • Treating Group 3 as complete compliance evidence: obtain the current certificate and have the project team check the applicable building requirements.
  • Expecting identical boards: inspect samples and delivered packs with natural colour and grain variation in mind.

Is Glosswood lining right for your project?

Glosswood is a strong fit when you want a prefinished timber surface with a clearly defined V-joint, selectable board width and a choice of matte or satin colour. It is especially practical for interior walls and ceilings where the timber is protected and the substrate can be prepared accurately.

It is not a universal answer for every exterior or high-moisture condition. Confirm exposure, substrate, fire documentation, ventilation and local compliance before committing. The visual result depends as much on layout, acclimatisation and end-sealing as on the selected colour, so involve an installer who will follow the current finish-specific guide rather than treating the boards like generic cladding.
