Leonardo.Ai’s Remix feature starts a new image generation from an existing Leonardo image. Find the image, open its actions, select Remix, then review the prompt and settings before generating. It creates a new result—not a pixel-perfect copy or an edit to the original—and the controls available can vary with the image and current interface.
What Remix does—and what it carries over
Remix is a variation workflow: it uses an existing image as a starting point for another generation. Leonardo confirms that public-feed images can be remixed, but its current documentation does not promise that every Remix will inherit the same prompt, model, dimensions, or settings. Older instructional material describes carrying over the source prompt, model, size, and related settings; treat that as a possible starting point, not a guarantee for every image or current workflow (older Leonardo AI manual).
Because the result is generated anew, details such as faces, hands, text, composition, and style can change. Remix does not create a layered file or guarantee character consistency. Inspect what the interface has carried forward rather than assuming the source’s settings are intact.

How to Remix an image
- Sign in to Leonardo.Ai. Open the web app and go to your personal generations or Library, or browse the public feed. Leonardo’s image-generation guide describes starting image creation from the home page or left sidebar.
- Open the source image’s actions. Click the image to open its detail view, or hover over its card. Look for Remix; it may also be in an overflow menu. Leonardo’s commercial-usage guide documents Remix for images in the public feed.
- Select Remix, then inspect the generation screen. Review the prompt and any carried-over model or settings. Remove details you do not want repeated.
- Describe the variation. State what should stay and what should change. For example: “Keep the same subject, pose, camera angle, and composition, but change the setting to a rainy Tokyo street at night with cinematic blue and magenta lighting.”
- Check the available controls. Confirm the model, dimensions or aspect ratio, number of outputs, and privacy setting. These controls depend on the model and workflow.
- Check the displayed generation cost, then generate. The cost appears on or near the Generate button; it can vary with the model, dimensions, features, reference images, and output count. See Leonardo’s token FAQ for allowance and cost details.
- Compare and keep the result you want. Generated images appear in the AI Creation feed and Library, where Leonardo’s documented actions include downloading and further editing (image-generation guide).
Write prompts that preserve the right details
Put the elements to preserve and the requested change in separate, concrete instructions. Avoid asking for a completely new subject, style, setting, lighting, and composition at once; changing one major variable per attempt makes it easier to see what caused a result to drift.
Change a background
“Keep the same character, facial features, hairstyle, pose, clothing silhouette, camera angle, and composition. Change only the environment to a misty pine forest at sunrise.”

Make a product variation
“Keep the same bottle, front-facing composition, soft studio lighting, and neutral background. Change the label color from blue to emerald green. Add subtle condensation on the glass. Do not add extra bottles, text, or logos.”
Separate fixed elements from changes
A useful pattern is: Keep: subject, pose, framing, and style. Change: one specific element. Add: a clearly described detail. Avoid: unwanted text, duplicate objects, or other known problems. If the interface provides a negative prompt, use it for exclusions; Leonardo’s Canvas Editor guide describes that control, including “extra limbs” as an example.

Choose the right tool for the job
Remix is best for a broad new variation. Choose another workflow when you need a more controlled edit or many alternatives.

If Remix is missing, disabled, or not behaving as expected
The Remix action is missing
Open the image in its detail view and check its overflow menu. If Remix still is not offered, the action may not be available for that image or interface. Look for Edit, Use as Guide, or reference-image controls instead. In image generation, Leonardo documents selecting the image/reference icon beside the prompt, then choosing or uploading an image and generating with Image Guidance (Image Guidance instructions).

The action is disabled or settings are unavailable
Some guidance options are incompatible with certain base models and may appear greyed out; Leonardo says the interface can explain how to change an incompatible option. Try a supported model or current Image Guidance workflow, but do not assume switching models will preserve every source setting.
The prompt did not carry over
Use the original prompt if it is visible. Otherwise, describe the source image with Leonardo’s available image-description feature, rebuild a concise prompt, or use the source as a reference image. You can also open the image in Inline Editor and state the desired change directly. Remix does not guarantee full prompt transfer across workflows.

The result diverged too far
- Request fewer changes and specify which features must remain.
- Match the source’s aspect ratio where the controls allow it.
- Use Image Guidance and adjust its available strength; stronger guidance may improve adherence but can also produce unwanted results.
- For a localized change, use Inline Editor or mask the area in Canvas rather than regenerating the whole image.
Leonardo describes aspect-ratio matching and adjustable guidance in its Image Guidance documentation.
A face, hand, or text changed
That can happen in a new generation. Try a targeted edit or mask only the area that needs changing. Generate candidates if needed, and proofread all text before publishing.
You are short on tokens
Leonardo’s token FAQ says free users receive 150 daily tokens and that costs vary by model, features, dimensions, reference count, and output count. Check the live cost before each generation, test with one output, and upscale only the version you choose (token FAQ).
Privacy and rights when remixing images
Leonardo says public generations can be visible and usable by other members through features including Remix, Upscale, Create Video, and Use as Guide. Its documentation says Private Mode is available to paid users; consult Leonardo’s current private and public images guidance and commercial-usage guidance for the applicable terms.

- Your private image: Use a private workflow for confidential or client material, and check the privacy control before generating.
- Your public image: Other members may be able to view or remix it.
- Someone else’s public image: The availability of Remix does not make the source exclusive to you or transfer its rights.
- Commercial publication: Check Leonardo’s current terms, the source image’s rights, and any rights involving recognizable people, brands, characters, or logos. A Remix should not be assumed automatically clear for commercial use.
