For a controlled Midjourney edit, decide what should change, frame the image, select the area, describe the desired result, and review the generated options before exporting. Use Erase for localized changes, Pan or Zoom Out to extend the composition, and Retexture for a whole-image style change.
The web Editor works with Midjourney creations and personal images. Its features can behave differently across tools and model versions, so check the live Editor controls rather than assuming every workflow uses the same model.

- Light Editor: open a Midjourney image from Create or Organize and choose Edit.
- Full Edit tab: use this for a personal image, an image URL, canvas adjustments, or layers.
The cited web documentation lists a 10 MB upload limit (Midjourney, Creating on Web and Managing Image Uploads). If a file exceeds it, resize or compress it before uploading. See Midjourney’s web-creation guide.

Identify the task before choosing a tool: are you replacing an object, making room around the image, selecting a background, combining assets, or changing the overall style?

1. Start with the right source image
Open a Midjourney creation from Create or Organize and choose Edit. For a personal image, use the full Edit tab to upload it or provide an image URL.
Choose a source whose composition, perspective, and lighting are close to the intended result. The Editor can modify a selected region or extend a composition, but repeated local edits may not fix a fundamentally unsuitable starting image.

Use Move / Resize to adjust the image placement or canvas dimensions before detailed edits. The full Edit tab supports aspect-ratio presets and custom ratios. Decide on the intended framing first so later changes do not disrupt work you want to retain.

Extending a canvas for a banner
- Open the source image in the Editor.
- Use Move / Resize to create space where the composition needs to extend.
- Mark the new area with Erase, then describe what should appear there.
- Review the generated options for continuity with the existing scene.
- Refine the extension if the transition or composition is not convincing.
You can also use Pan to extend in a chosen direction or Zoom Out to add context around the borders. Changing the aspect ratio with Remix is not the same as extending the canvas: Midjourney says Remix stretches the image and does not add missing detail. See Pan, Zoom Out, and Remix.
3. Use Erase for localized edits
In the Paint panel, Erase marks an area for regeneration and Restore brings back parts of the original. Select an area that gives the model enough context to make the change, without including more of the image than you want it to reinterpret.
- Too small: the model may lack context for the object and its surroundings.
- Too large: content you wanted to preserve may change.
- Appropriately sized: gives the model context while keeping the edit focused.
For a localized edit, describe what should appear in the selected area directly. Keep the prompt concise and focused on the change. Midjourney’s Vary Region guidance recommends short, direct prompts and making changes one section at a time.

Describe the subject or replacement and, when relevant, its placement or relationship to nearby objects. Include only the constraints needed for the edit, such as preserving an adjacent feature or matching the scene’s perspective. Prompts can guide a result but do not guarantee that other details will remain unchanged; inspect the output.

4. Use Smart Select for object-level masking
Smart Select helps build a selection around an object or region. Add positive Include points for what you want selected and negative Exclude points for parts selected by mistake. Then choose Erase Selection or Erase Background to apply the selection before submitting.
Check the selection boundaries before editing, especially around fine or overlapping details. A visible selection is not itself an applied erase mask. For more detail, see the Editor documentation.
5. Add layers when compositing
Layers let you add, reorder, move, and scale images. Check which layer is active before using selection or paint tools. On submission, visible areas remain while transparent areas are regenerated, and the composition is flattened. Save or download an important intermediate version before making another major change.
- Add the image you want to use as a layer.
- Move and scale it to fit the composition.
- Erase areas that should be regenerated or blended.
- Check the composition and active layer before submitting.
- Review the generated options and refine if needed.
6. Reserve Retexture for whole-image style changes
Use Retexture when you want to apply a new visual treatment across the image. For a single object or small area, use Erase or Smart Select instead. Review the result against the original: a global style change can affect details beyond the style itself.

7. Work one change at a time
Keep prompts aligned with the selected area and the intended change. For multiple edits, work on one section at a time, review the generated options, and then move on to the next. This makes it easier to see whether each change did what you wanted.
Three practical workflows
Replace an object
- Open the image in the Editor.
- Use Erase or Smart Select to mark the object and enough surrounding context.
- Describe the replacement directly and include only relevant constraints.
- Compare the generated options, checking both the edit and nearby content.
Extend a composition
- Use Move / Resize to create space, or choose Pan to extend in a direction or Zoom Out to add context around the borders.
- Use Erase where an area needs to be regenerated, if required by the workflow.
- Describe the continuation you want.
- Review the options for a natural transition and suitable composition.
Restyle an image
- Use Retexture for a whole-image treatment.
- Describe the desired visual treatment.
- Compare the result with the original and check details that should remain recognizable.
- Refine or reject the result if it does not meet the intended use.
8. Review and export deliberately
Review generated options in the results panel before continuing or exporting. Check the parts that matter for your use, including faces, lettering, logos, product details, and transitions between edited and original areas.
You can upscale an approved result to the gallery or download it. Uploaded or layered edits do not appear on Create or Organize unless upscaled. Downloading and upscaling options are described in the Editor documentation.

- Composition: Is the framing right for the intended use?
- Selection: Does the edited region include enough context without covering content you want to keep?
- Layers: Is the intended layer active?
- Review: Have you compared the generated options with the original?
- Accuracy: Have you checked text, logos, faces, and important product details?
- Export: Have you chosen whether to upscale to the gallery or download?
- Privacy: Have you checked the current visibility settings for the image and account?
Privacy and uploads
Midjourney says uploads are held in the personal uploads library. When Stealth Mode is off, prompt details and images may be visible beside creations on the site. Check the current account and workflow privacy settings before uploading material that should remain confidential. See Managing Image Uploads.

Common problems and fixes

Can I use Midjourney’s Editor with an image created outside Midjourney?
Yes. Use the full Edit tab to upload a personal image or provide an image URL. The cited web documentation lists a 10 MB upload limit.
How do I edit part of an image in Midjourney?
Use Erase to mark the area to regenerate, or use Smart Select to build a selection and apply it with Erase Selection or Erase Background. Describe the desired change directly and review the options.
How do I change the background without changing the subject?
Use Smart Select or Erase to target the background, then inspect the selection boundary before submitting. Generative editing may still change other details, so check the result against the original.
