The Lasso tool in ibisPaint X creates a freehand selection around an irregular part of your artwork. It does not move the artwork by itself; after selecting, you can transform, recolor, shade, erase, copy, or otherwise edit only that area. The current official workflow is Tool Select → Lasso tool → Set, Add, or Subtract → outline the area.
ibisPaint’s documentation now generally says “ibisPaint,” while many users still search for “ibisPaint X.” Menu placement and gesture icons can differ between Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, app editions, and screen sizes.
What the Lasso tool does
Lasso is a freehand selection tool. Draw a closed outline around a character’s eye, mouth, hand, hair strand, clothing detail, sketch section, or irregular background area, and ibisPaint limits subsequent edits to the enclosed region.

For example, the official tutorial uses a selection to adjust a character’s mouth. The selection itself is only a boundary; moving or resizing requires the Transform tool.
See the official Lasso tutorial for the illustrated workflow.
Where to find Lasso
- Open your artwork.
- Tap Tool Select on the main toolbar.
- Choose Lasso tool in the Tool Select window.
The official tool list places Lasso near Transform and Magic Wand, but the exact arrangement can change with the device and interface layout. The official Tool Select reference shows the documented tool list.
Make a basic selection
- Select the layer containing the pixels you want to edit.
- Open Tool Select, then tap Lasso tool.
- Choose Set for a new selection.
- Draw one continuous outline around the desired area, then release your finger or stylus to enclose it.
- Look for the animated or dashed boundary. The enclosed region is the active selection.
If you need to inspect which side is active, open the Layer window and check the Selection Layer; the selected region is shown in blue.

Set, Add, and Subtract
| Mode | What it does | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Set | Replaces the current selection. | Starting a new selection or selecting one simple object. |
| Add | Keeps the current selection and adds the newly outlined area. | Building a complicated outline in several strokes or restoring a missed section. |
| Subtract | Removes the newly outlined area from the current selection. | Cutting out holes, gaps, or unwanted background. |
For a complex shape, begin with Set, then refine with Add and Subtract instead of repeatedly starting over. The official tutorial recommends Add while you learn the tool.
Move, resize, or rotate selected content
- With the selection active, tap Transform.
- Drag with one finger to move the selected content.
- Pinch with two fingers to scale it.
- Enable the Rotate control when you need to turn it.
- Use a two-finger drag to rotate.
- Tap Done to apply the transformation.
- Clear the selection when you finish.
Transform controls and icons can look different across platforms and releases, so look for the functions named Transform, Rotate, and Done rather than relying on a particular screenshot.
Recolor or shade only the selected area
- Create and refine the Lasso selection.
- Choose a brush, bucket, or another painting tool.
- Apply the new color or shading normally.
- Tap the selection’s Clear command when finished.
While the selection remains active, painting outside it is blocked. This is useful for controlled edits, but it can also make a brush appear broken if you forget to clear the selection.
Erase part of an image
- Make the Lasso selection.
- Choose Eraser and brush within the selected region, or use the selection controls’ Clear operation when available in your interface.
- Clear the selection afterward.
Eraser removes pixels by brushing; a Clear operation removes selected content in one action where that command is provided. Button names can vary by edition.

Invert and clear a selection
Invert the selected side
- Make a selection.
- Tap Invert Selection.
- Edit the area that was previously outside the selection.
Tap Invert Selection again to return to the original side. Because the boundary can look similar after inversion, verify the active region in the Selection Layer if necessary.
Clear the selection
When your edit is complete, use the selection controls’ Clear command (sometimes described elsewhere as deselect). The dashed outline should disappear, and painting should work across the canvas again.
Layers, copying, and moving
Select the correct artwork layer before lassoing. If the visible subject is spread across several layers, you may need to repeat the operation on each layer, duplicate or merge content first, or use a layer-specific workflow. Lasso should not be assumed to combine every visible layer automatically.
A Lasso selection also does not automatically make a duplicate. Copying, pasting, cutting, and transforming are related but separate workflows; ibisPaint lists dedicated tutorials and an index for those commands. Do not assume that every edition pastes copied content onto a new layer.

Lasso versus Magic Wand
| Choose Lasso when… | Choose Magic Wand when… |
|---|---|
| The shape is irregular and you want to trace its boundary manually. | The area can be identified by a similar or contiguous color. |
| The boundary is visual rather than a consistent color edge. | A clear color boundary makes automatic selection quicker. |
These are practical distinctions; both tools appear separately in the official Tool Select documentation.
Cleaner selections and common fixes
- Zoom in before tracing small details on a phone or tablet.
- Use Add for missed pixels and Subtract for excess background.
- For soft or semi-transparent edges, avoid selecting only a razor-thin border; leave a small margin and clean up afterward.
- Confirm the intended layer before editing.
- Save or make an undo point before a major transformation.
The brush will not draw
A selection is probably still active. Return to the selection controls and tap Clear, then try again.
The wrong side is selected
Tap Invert Selection. Check the Selection Layer if the dashed boundary is ambiguous.
Part of the object is missing
Choose Add and outline the missing section.
Too much background is included
Choose Subtract and outline the unwanted area until the selection is clean.

The object moved but a copy remains
Check the Layer window. The original may be on another visible layer, or the content may have been copied before transforming. Undo if the result is not intended.
The result is incomplete or Transform affects the wrong thing
Undo, confirm the active layer and dashed boundary, then expand the selection with Add or recreate it. Transparent pixels, multiple layers, and pixels outside the outline can all change the result.
The reliable short workflow
Select Lasso → outline → refine with Add/Subtract → edit or Transform → Done → Clear. Keeping that final Clear step in the routine prevents most “my brush stopped working” problems.
