To view an SVG in Windows 10, open it with Microsoft Edge or another SVG-capable browser; for thumbnails and preview-pane display in File Explorer, use PowerToys. To edit vector artwork such as paths, shapes, or text, use Inkscape; Microsoft 365 can format an SVG placed in a document, but that is not the same as editing all its original vector objects.
Windows rendering support covers a documented subset of SVG features, so a file can look different in different apps. A rendering difference does not by itself mean the file is damaged.
What is an SVG file?
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. An SVG file describes graphics using vector information, such as paths, shapes, and text. Unlike a JPG or PNG, vector artwork can usually be enlarged without the pixelation associated with fixed-resolution bitmap images.

How to view an SVG in Windows 10
Open it in Microsoft Edge or another browser
- Open File Explorer and browse to the SVG file.
- Right-click it and select Open with.
- Choose Microsoft Edge or another installed browser that supports SVG.
A browser is useful for inspecting the rendered artwork, but it does not provide controls for editing the SVG’s vector objects. Microsoft describes SVG support in Edge and Chromium browsers in its Edge SVG article.
Use File Explorer thumbnails or preview pane
For browsing a folder of SVG files visually, Microsoft documents SVG thumbnail and preview-pane support through PowerToys File Explorer add-ons. This is a preview feature, not an editing feature. See the PowerToys File Explorer documentation.
Insert an SVG into Microsoft 365
- Open Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or Outlook.
- Select Insert > Pictures > This Device.
- Choose the SVG and select Insert.
Select the placed graphic to access Graphics Format controls such as fill, outline, size, effects, alignment, rotation, and crop. These are document-level formatting controls. Microsoft notes that changing individual parts may require converting the SVG to shapes; its documented conversion workflow requires Office for Microsoft 365 on Windows. Change the association from File Explorer
- Right-click an SVG file.
- Select Open with > Choose another app.
- Select the browser or editor you want to use.
- Enable Always use this app to open .svg files.
- Confirm your choice.
Change it in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Default apps.
- Select Choose default apps by file type.
- Find .svg and choose an application.
You can still select another program for an individual file through Open with.

Edit SVG files with Inkscape
Inkscape is a free vector editor for changing SVG artwork. It can be used to edit objects and paths, adjust fills and strokes, and work with text. Get the current Windows installer and check its requirements on the Inkscape installation page.
Basic Inkscape workflow
- Install and launch Inkscape.
- Select File > Open and choose the SVG.
- Edit the artwork as needed.
- Select File > Save or File > Save As to save the SVG.
- If another app needs a raster image, export a separate PNG from the editor and keep the editable SVG.
Check the result after editing because file contents and application support can vary. For instructions on associating SVG files with Inkscape, see the Inkscape FAQ.
If you can select only the whole logo
The artwork may be grouped or structured in a way that makes individual elements harder to select. Inspect the document in the editor and work on a copy before changing its structure. If the graphic contains a bitmap rather than editable vector objects, those pixels cannot be edited as vector paths.

Text may remain editable text or have been converted to outlines. Outlined text can be reshaped as vector geometry, but it cannot be edited like ordinary words. If live text looks different, the needed font may be unavailable. Check the artwork after opening and saving it in an editor.

Choose the right way to view or edit an SVG

Choose based on whether you need to view, preview, format a placed graphic, or edit vector artwork. No single route guarantees that every SVG feature will look or behave identically.
Why an SVG will not open or looks wrong
Blank or incomplete browser display
Windows and browser SVG support has feature limits. Try opening the file in a vector editor to compare the result. A difference in rendering does not alone prove that the file is corrupt.
- Try another SVG-capable browser or open the file in Inkscape.
- Check whether the file is correctly named with an .svg extension.
- If it still fails, ask the creator for a compatible export or an editable source file.
The file opens as text
Use Open with and select a browser or vector editor. Check that the filename ends in .svg, rather than a name such as design.svg.txt.
The artwork changes after editing
Different applications may handle SVG features differently. Check the saved file in the application where it will be used, and keep the original SVG so you can return to it if needed.

SVG versus PNG and JPG
Keep the SVG when you need scalable artwork or editable vector objects. PNG and JPG are raster formats with fixed pixel dimensions. If an application needs pixels, export a separate PNG from a vector editor at the required size. Changing a filename extension does not convert the artwork.

Can Windows 10 open SVG files?
Yes. You can open an SVG with Microsoft Edge or another browser that supports SVG. Windows rendering has documented feature limits, so not every feature is guaranteed to appear identically in every app.
Can I edit an SVG in a browser?
A browser can display an SVG, but it is not a full vector editor. Use Inkscape to edit vector artwork.
Can Word edit SVG files?
Word can insert an SVG and apply document-level formatting. Editing individual parts may require converting the image to shapes in a supported Office workflow; that is different from editing the original SVG’s vector objects in a vector editor.
