DecoWood is designed to resist fading, but it is not fade-proof. DECO Australia says the aluminium finish is exposed to severe UV, salt spray, humidity and pollution during testing, with colour and gloss checked against Qualicoat limits. Its own 10-year coastal example reports some loss of colour richness, while the woodgrain pattern and overall colour remained strong.
What DecoWood is—and why that matters for fading
DecoWood is not weathering timber. It is an aluminium product with a timber-look surface made from a Super Durable Qualicoat Class 2.0 powder coating and sublimation technology, according to DECO Australia. The substrate does not absorb moisture or weather like wood, so the relevant question is how the applied finish changes colour and gloss over time.

DECO’s care information says the coating does not require painting or staining. That reduces the maintenance associated with a conventional timber finish, but it does not mean the colour remains identical forever. Ultraviolet radiation, heat, salt, airborne pollutants, moisture and surface contamination can all affect a coated exterior over its service life.
Fade resistance is a performance target, not a promise of zero change
A finish can remain within an accepted colour-change range while becoming slightly less rich than when new. That distinction is important with a woodgrain product: a modest change in saturation may be visible in a side-by-side comparison even when the grain image is still clear and the installation looks consistent from normal viewing distance.

What DECO says its testing shows
DECO says DecoWood is tested for years in Florida and Venice, locations selected for combinations of strong UV radiation, salt spray, humidity and pollution. The company says colour and gloss are measured regularly and compared with the limits Qualicoat sets for the Super Durable classification.
This description supports a reasonable expectation of good outdoor durability, especially compared with an interior decorative coating. It does not establish that every colour will fade by the same amount, or that a particular installation will match a laboratory exposure result. The public material reviewed does not include the underlying numerical test report, per-colour results or a quantified fade curve. For a project where colour retention is critical, request the technical test documentation for the exact finish and colour.

How to read the available evidence
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| DECO’s Florida and Venice exposure program | The manufacturer says the finish is exposed to UV and other environmental stresses, with colour and gloss monitored against Qualicoat limits. | It does not provide a public numerical fade rate or guarantee identical results at every site. |
| Bombora Seafood Restaurant, Wollongong Harbour | DECO reports that windows and doors installed 10 years earlier in strong northern sun and salt spray retained a strong colour and grain pattern. | DECO also reports some loss of colour richness; this is one manufacturer-described installation, not a controlled comparison. |
| “50% more durable than standard powder coating” | This wording appears on DECO’s product information. | The reviewed material does not state the durability metric, test method, baseline product or whether the figure measures colour retention. |
What the 10-year coastal example means in practice
The Bombora Seafood Restaurant example is useful because it reflects a demanding real-world setting: Wollongong Harbour, northern exposure, strong sunlight and salt spray. DECO says the products had not needed painting or staining after 10 years. It also explicitly says some colour richness was lost, while the colour and woodgrain pattern remained strong.

That combination is a realistic way to interpret “resists fading.” A DecoWood installation can continue to look recognisably like the selected finish after a decade in a harsh coastal location, yet still show gradual softening in colour intensity. The example should not be treated as a guaranteed result for every orientation, colour or cleaning routine.
How exposure and design choices affect the result
Orientation and sun load
North-facing surfaces in the southern hemisphere can receive intense direct sun for long periods. Shading from roof overhangs, balconies, nearby buildings or landscaping can reduce exposure, while an unshaded elevation can experience faster visual change. Two elevations on the same building may therefore age differently.
Coastal and industrial conditions
Salt deposits and airborne pollution do not necessarily mean the coating will fail, but they increase the importance of regular washing. Deposits left on the surface can hold moisture and contaminants against the coating and make gloss or colour changes more noticeable.

Colour and grain selection
Dark, saturated colours generally make gradual lightening easier to notice than pale, low-contrast finishes. Woodgrain patterns can also disguise small variations because the surface is visually textured. DECO says displayed colours and grains are guides, not substitutes for a physical sample; order and inspect a sample before final selection.
Warranty coverage: what is actually promised
DECO’s current warranty information says sublimated powder-coat finishes, including DecoWood, are available with a 12-year warranty under AS 3715 conditions. It lists colour change outside allowable limits and gloss level among covered matters. In environments classified as extremely corrosive, DECO states a six-year warranty under AS 4213.
| Situation | Warranty term stated by DECO | Condition to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Standard applications meeting AS 3715 conditions | 12 years | Warranty eligibility requires an application at the time of ordering, and the project must meet the applicable finish, substrate, application and environmental requirements. |
| Extreme corrosivity environments under AS 4213 | 6 years | Confirm that the site is classified as an extreme-corrosivity environment and obtain the project-specific written terms. |
This is not a blanket promise that no colour will change. The relevant question is whether the change exceeds the allowable limit under the applicable standard and warranty. Ask the fabricator or supplier for the warranty certificate before approving the order, and check that it names the selected colour, substrate, installation conditions and site environment.

- THICK, NO-DRIP FORMULA: Less mess than traditional wood stains and applies smoothly on horizontal and vertical surfaces including wood, metal, fiberglass and more
- LOW ODOR, WATER BASED GEL STAIN: Comfortably complete projects indoors including furniture, doors, trim and banisters
- FAST DRY TIME: Dries on wood in only 1 hour for quick project completion
- RICH, EVEN COLOR: Covers up to 250 square feet per quart
- INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR USE: Ideal for indoor and outdoor applications; not recommended for floors, decks or siding
Maintenance can affect eligibility
DECO says cleaning should be regular, use approved products and be recorded. Keep a simple log with dates, areas cleaned, product used and any unusual deposits or damage. A record cannot prevent UV exposure, but it can demonstrate that the surface was maintained in line with the manufacturer’s instructions if a warranty assessment is needed.

Cleaning steps that protect the coated surface
Cleaning is maintenance for the coating, not a way to stop UV-related colour change. Frequency depends on the location and exposure and should follow AS 3715 guidance. A sheltered inland installation may need less frequent washing than an exposed coastal elevation.
- Rinse loose dirt first. Use a hose or a high-pressure attachment. Test pressure and distance on a small, inconspicuous area before cleaning the whole installation.
- Avoid a cyclonic or tornado washer head. DECO specifically advises against this attachment because its concentrated action can be too aggressive for the coated surface.
- Wash stubborn deposits gently. Use a soft cloth or mop with warm soapy water or a non-abrasive detergent.
- Use only the named approved cleaners when you need a product. DECO’s guide identifies Morning Fresh detergent and Orange Solve Citrus Cleaner as approved options.
- Do not use hard-bristle brushes. DECO warns that they can create micro-scratches that reduce the finish’s visual quality.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Remove all detergent or cleaner residue, then record the date and products used.
Do not scrub aggressively to remove a mark that does not lift with gentle washing. Excessive pressure can create a new surface defect that is more visible than the original deposit.

What to do about scratches or local marks
DECO’s FAQ says light scratches may be addressed by buffing. It also mentions colour-matched touch-up paint designed to blend with the woodgrain finish. Treat either approach as a cosmetic repair, not proof that the repaired spot has regained the original fade resistance.
Before attempting a repair, photograph the damage and contact the supplier if the mark could be a coating failure, deep gouge or widespread colour change. A touch-up product may look different from the factory finish when viewed at an angle, and applying it before a warranty assessment could complicate the claim.

How to compare DecoWood for a real project
Use the following checklist before signing off the finish:
- Map exposure. Note orientation, hours of direct sun, shading, distance from the coast and any industrial pollution.
- Specify the exact finish. Record the colour and grain code rather than relying on a display board or screen image.
- Inspect a physical sample. View it outdoors, including in direct and indirect light, because displayed colours and grains are only guides.
- Obtain written warranty terms. Confirm whether AS 3715 or AS 4213 applies, the term offered, allowable colour and gloss limits, and any ordering or installation conditions.
- Plan the cleaning schedule. Decide who will wash the surfaces, which approved cleaner will be used and how records will be kept.
- Ask for technical documents. If the project has strict colour-retention requirements, request the test documentation for the chosen finish rather than relying on a general durability statement.
Do not treat the 50% statement as a fade guarantee
“50% more durable than standard powder coating” sounds precise, but the reviewed DECO product text does not define what is being measured. It does not say whether the comparison concerns colour change, gloss retention, chalking, mechanical performance or another property, nor does it identify the test method. Use the statement as a manufacturer description, not as a quantified prediction of how many years the colour will remain unchanged.
Questions to ask your supplier before ordering
- Which written warranty applies to this site and exact DecoWood finish?
- Is the location covered by AS 3715 conditions or classified as extreme corrosivity under AS 4213?
- What colour-change and gloss limits will be used if a claim is assessed?
- Can you provide the relevant technical test documentation and identify the exposure conditions?
- What cleaning interval do you recommend for this site’s sun, salt and pollution exposure?
- Will the project warranty application be submitted at ordering, and can I receive the certificate before manufacture?
- What procedure should be followed if colour variation, scratches or an unexpected finish change appears after installation?
Verdict: resistant, not fade-proof
DecoWood has a credible fade-resistance design: a Super Durable Qualicoat Class 2.0 powder coating, sublimation technology and manufacturer-reported exposure testing in harsh climates. DECO’s 10-year Wollongong example indicates that the colour and grain can remain strong in severe sun and salt spray, while also confirming that some loss of colour richness can occur.
For a sound decision, treat DecoWood as a low-maintenance aluminium finish with controlled colour performance—not as a promise of permanent, unchanged colour. Match the finish to the site exposure, verify the written warranty and maintain the surface with gentle, documented cleaning.
