Hublot announced Light & Time, a temporary, functioning sundial by contemporary artist Daniel Arsham, on 6 March 2023. Set in the snow at Schwarzsee, Zermatt, the 20-metre installation used sunlight and a central pointer to mark time in raked snow.
Where was Daniel Arsham’s Hublot sundial?
Hublot announced the work for Schwarzsee, in Zermatt, Switzerland, in the shadow of the Matterhorn. Its 2023 announcement gave the site’s elevation as 2,583 metres and said the installation would be visible from the top of the mountain, meaning visitors would need to use Zermatt’s ski lifts to view it. That describes the access plan in the announcement, not current visitor guidance. Hublot called the work temporary; its announcement does not establish exact installation or removal dates or whether anything remains on site today. Hublot’s announcement, 6 March 2023.
How did the sundial tell time?
The installation worked by the traditional sundial principle: sunlight cast a shadow from a central pointer, and that shadow indicated the time. At Schwarzsee, the pointer was part of a quartz-crystal-shaped obelisk, while the time markings were raked into the snow around it. Hublot described the work as a 20-metre outdoor sundial; the announcement does not provide an independent measurement of its dimensions or further technical specifications.

How did the design connect to Hublot?
Hublot presented Light & Time as land art bringing snow, sunlight and watchmaking’s timekeeping tradition together. The brand said Arsham designed the sundial in Hublot’s visual language, including details such as screws reminiscent of those used to secure the Big Bang bezel. Those design associations are Hublot’s description of the project, rather than an independent critical assessment.
Arsham described the installation as a way to make fleeting time leave a lasting memory for people who made the journey up the mountain. He also said he valued how Hublot combined ideas, influences and materials to create distinctive forms. Hublot named Arsham a brand ambassador and presented the sundial as the start of their collaboration.

Was the Arsham Droplet the same project?
No. Light & Time was the 2023 outdoor sundial installation. In 2024, Hublot and Arsham introduced the separate Arsham Droplet, a timepiece that could be used as a pocket watch, worn as a pendant or displayed as a table clock. Hublot said that edition was limited to 99 pieces. Hublot’s announcement of the Arsham Droplet, 6 June 2024.

A simple classroom or home-built sundial can demonstrate the basic idea—using the Sun’s position and a shadow to indicate time—but it is not a replica of Arsham’s artwork. NASA provides a printable sundial template for students, and its later activity lists materials including a template, scissors, pencil, modeling dough or clay, and glue.
