The Human Artistry Campaign announced its “Stealing Isn’t Innovation” initiative on January 22, 2026, calling for permission and compensation when creative work is used to develop generative AI. What the “Stealing Isn’t Innovation” campaign is asking for
The Human Artistry Campaign calls for authorization and licensing for creative work used in AI development, compensation for authorized uses, creator opt-out rights, enforcement of rights and agreements, and partnerships between AI companies and rights holders. The Authors Guild described the initiative as a campaign demanding that AI systems not be trained on unlicensed creative work.
For painters and other visual artists, the issue is whether their work can be used to develop AI systems without permission or compensation. The campaign advocates for a rights-respecting approach; it does not establish that every use of a publicly accessible artwork is legally prohibited.

Who signed the statement?
Euronews reported approximately 800 signatories at launch. Reported examples included authors George Saunders and Jodi Picoult, actors Cate Blanchett and Scarlett Johansson, and musicians R.E.M., Billy Corgan, and The Roots. This is an approximate launch-time figure, not a verified current total, and signing or supporting the initiative does not mean each person made identical statements beyond that support.
What does “AI slop” mean here?
“AI slop” is a pejorative phrase for low-quality synthetic material. The campaign warns that unauthorized use of creative work could be connected to misinformation, deepfakes, and possible model collapse. These are campaign warnings, not quantified findings established by the launch announcement; it does not show that all AI training inevitably produces those outcomes.

Human Artistry Campaign Senior Advisor Dr. Moiya McTier said in the campaign announcement: “Stealing someone’s work isn’t innovation, it’s theft.” That is the campaign’s position, not a settled legal conclusion.

Is the campaign against all AI?
No. The campaign presents licensing and collaboration as compatible with AI development. Its argument is that creative work should be used with authorization and that creators should be able to negotiate compensation or opt out of generative-AI training.

What this means for painters
The campaign is advocacy, not a new legal right or a tool that automatically removes work from AI training datasets. Painters who want to document their work or understand how it may be used can take practical steps:
- Keep records of your work. Preserve dated originals and documentation that helps establish authorship and chronology.
- Review platform terms. Check whether the services where you publish or store images address licensing or AI training.
- State your preferences. A notice can communicate your position, but it does not guarantee that downstream uses will be prevented.
- Save evidence of suspected misuse. Keep relevant URLs, dates, screenshots, and other details if you believe your work has been used improperly.
- Seek advice for a specific dispute. The campaign announcement does not resolve legal questions about a particular work or use.
These measures are recordkeeping and communication steps, not proof that an image was included in a model’s training data or a guarantee that an opt-out request will be honored.
