Choose ibisPaint if you want to draw on an iPhone or iPad, use manga-focused tools, or move between mobile and desktop. Choose Krita if you want free, open-source desktop painting software with broad illustration tools, Linux support, or 2D animation features. Start by checking device compatibility: Krita does not support iPhones or iPads.

Which app is better for your device?
Choose ibisPaint for iPhone or iPad
ibisPaint lists iPhone/iPad support alongside Android, Windows, and Mac. Krita explicitly says Apple iPads and iPhones are unsupported. If you draw on an iPad or iPhone, ibisPaint is the compatible option in this comparison. ibisPaint’s platform and product information and Krita’s download page list supported platforms.

Choose Krita for Linux
Krita lists Linux as a supported desktop platform; ibisPaint’s listed platforms are Windows, Mac, iOS/iPadOS, and Android. If Linux is your required operating system, Krita is the fit shown by the official platform lists.
Both list Android, Windows, and Mac
Both apps are available on Android and desktop platforms, but their requirements and input support differ. Check the official page for your specific device and operating-system version before installing.

How do their drawing features differ?
ibisPaint: manga-oriented tools and process sharing
ibisPaint highlights illustration and manga features such as screen tones, frame dividers, and text input. It also lets users create a video of the drawing process, a feature the company describes as distinctive. That combination makes it a natural option for manga pages and for artists who want to share how a piece was made. See ibisPaint’s product overview.
ibisPaint reports more than 47,000 brush types and more than 23,000 materials on its official page. These are vendor-published counts; the page does not date them. They describe different categories, and should not be treated as directly comparable to Krita’s brush count.

Krita: painting, illustration, and extensibility
Krita’s feature set includes a customizable interface, more than 30 dockers, brush stabilizers, layer types, drawing assistants, color management, PSD support, Python scripting, and 2D animation tools. Its manual positions the software for digital painting, concept art, illustration, and texturing. It also notes that other programs may offer more features for image-manipulation jobs such as stitching photos. Krita’s feature overview and manual guidance on Krita’s scope explain those strengths and limits.
Krita reports more than 100 professionally made preloaded brushes. This is a project-published count, with no publication year stated on the feature page. It is not the same measure as ibisPaint’s count of brush types.

Is Krita really free, and what does ibisPaint cost?
Krita is free software
Krita says it “is, and will always be, free software” and has no trials or subscriptions. Its installation manual says paid store versions are functionally identical to the free version available from Krita’s website; purchasing a store edition supports development after store fees. Krita’s features page and installation manual describe the policy.

The official desktop pricing page lists a free demo limited to one hour per day and a one-time Pro Upgrade. It lists the following US prices; the company says prices vary by app store and region, so check the offer shown in the app before buying.

These prices are the US listings on ibisPaint’s desktop product page; they may differ by region and store. The plan guide says Pro Upgrade unlocks listed Pro features and unlimited use. Premium adds Premium features and up to 20 GB of cloud storage; the desktop feature tables list up to 64 MB for other users. Cloud syncing between desktop and mobile requires an account. What computer requirements should you check?
ibisPaint for Windows
- Windows 10 version 2004 or newer, or Windows 11 version 21H2 or newer
- At least 2 GB RAM
- At least 2 GB available storage
- Windows Ink-compatible styluses and touch panels are described on the Windows product page
ibisPaint for Mac
- macOS 11 Big Sur or newer
- At least 4 GB RAM
- At least 2 GB available storage

Krita
Krita’s download page lists Windows 8.1 or higher, macOS 10.15, or Linux; at least 4 GB RAM is required, with 16 GB recommended. It also lists OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11. The page identifies Krita 5.3.4 as released on 15 September 2026; check the download page for current releases and requirements.

Krita says it supports any graphics tablet compatible with the operating system. ibisPaint’s mobile support and its Windows Ink-compatible stylus information make stylus input relevant, but compatibility depends on the precise device, operating system, and app version. Confirm that pairing with the hardware and software makers before choosing a tablet; the available compatibility information does not establish a single best tablet for both apps.
