ICE Solair is a reverse-cycle, wall-mounted split air conditioner that combines solar-thermal input with electricity. The thermal input assists the refrigeration cycle and reduces the work required from the compressor. That is different from a conventional air conditioner powered by rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels. The supplier has promoted savings of up to 50%, but that figure is a vendor claim, not a result every household should expect. Actual performance depends heavily on outdoor temperature, location and installation quality.

What ICE Solair is—and what “solar” means in this design
The ICE Solair system described in the ICE Solair Australia manual is a reverse-cycle, split-system air conditioner. It has an indoor wall-mounted unit and an outdoor unit, and it can provide both cooling and heating. Its solar contribution is thermal: heat collected from ambient air and the solar-assisted section supplements the system’s electrical energy.
The manual describes the purpose of that arrangement as reducing the energy demand placed on the compressor. In practical terms, the compressor still uses electricity, but the solar-thermal input is intended to make each cycle less demanding. It is therefore not accurate to describe ICE Solair as an air conditioner that runs solely from a rooftop solar-electric array.
#1 Best Overall
- 12000 BTU
- Full Solar or Full Electric
This distinction matters when you compare products. A PV-powered air conditioner first converts sunlight into electricity, then uses that electricity to operate a conventional compressor. ICE Solair’s documented design adds heat directly to the air-conditioning process. The two approaches can look similar in marketing material because both use the word “solar,” but their plumbing, controls, installation requirements and performance in changing weather are different.
How the solar-thermal assistance works
- The system is set to cooling or heating. In cooling mode, the refrigeration circuit removes heat from the room; in heating mode, the reverse-cycle valve changes the direction of heat transfer.
- Ambient heat contributes to the cycle. The solar-thermal section uses heat available in the surrounding air. A Solair World category FAQ describes the design as operating in ambient air temperature rather than requiring direct sunshine on a panel.
- Electrical energy runs the remaining equipment. Fans, controls and the compressor continue to need electricity. The thermal contribution is intended to reduce compressor demand, not eliminate the electrical connection.
- The controller adjusts operation as conditions change. Because the available ambient heat changes with weather and location, the amount of assistance is not a fixed daily quantity.
The manual says savings depend primarily on the ambient temperature of the region and may vary with latitude and longitude. A warm climate can provide a different operating result from a cool one, even when the same model is installed in rooms of similar size. Orientation, shading, airflow and the condition of the refrigeration system also affect what a household experiences.
How much energy can it save?
An ICE Solair supplier listing associated with an Architecture & Design article dated 20 November 2011 states savings of “up to 50%” in energy use. Treat that as the upper end of a marketing claim, not a measured guarantee for every installation. The listing does not establish that every home will achieve a 50% reduction, nor does it provide a single test condition that can be applied to all climates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When estimating savings, use a baseline that you can actually measure. Compare the unit’s electricity consumption with the previous air conditioner under similar weather, thermostat settings, occupancy and operating hours. A summer with milder temperatures can make a new system appear more efficient even if the equipment has not changed; a heatwave can do the opposite. If you cannot hold those variables reasonably constant, report the result as an observation rather than a product efficiency rating.
- Climate: Ambient temperature is the factor the manual identifies as the primary driver of savings.
- Set point: Extreme cooling or heating settings increase compressor runtime regardless of the solar assist.
- Airflow: Blocked indoor or outdoor airflow forces the system to work harder.
- Building heat gain: Open windows, unshaded glazing and poor door discipline add heat that the unit must remove.
- Maintenance: Dirty filters and a neglected outdoor coil can reduce delivered capacity and efficiency.
For a purchase decision, ask the installer to state the expected energy comparison, the reference system, the climate assumptions and whether the number is a test result or an estimate. A percentage without those conditions is not enough to calculate payback.

Does the solar section need direct sunlight?
No direct beam of sunlight is required according to the Solair World category FAQ: the design is intended to function in ambient air temperature. That means the system can continue operating when clouds pass over, when the outdoor unit is shaded, and after sunset. “Solar” in this context does not mean that the compressor stops whenever the sun is hidden.
Night operation is possible because the air around the outdoor unit remains the energy source. The amount of thermal assistance can change as the air cools, so night-time savings should not be assumed to match daytime savings. The manual explicitly notes that savings can occur day or night, while also warning that results vary with regional ambient temperature.
Do not cover, enclose or obstruct the outdoor unit in an attempt to control sunlight. The unit needs clear airflow. Any screen, louvre or shade structure should be designed with a qualified technician so it does not restrict the fan or trap hot air around the coil.
Operating temperatures and protection limits
The manual gives the following outdoor-temperature ranges. These are operating limits for the documented equipment, not a promise that comfort or efficiency will be identical at every point in the range.
| Mode | Outdoor temperature listed in the manual | What operation outside the range can cause |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling | 18°C to 53°C | Protective shutdown, water dripping or low efficiency |
| Heating | −7°C to 24°C | Protective shutdown, water dripping or low efficiency |
If the outdoor temperature is outside the stated band, do not defeat a protection control or repeatedly restart the unit. Turn it off, allow conditions to return to the specified range and contact the installer if the problem persists. Water dripping can have several causes, including condensation and restricted airflow; the temperature limit alone does not identify the fault.

- New air conditioning for solar energy: 100% brand new, high-quality cooling, deodorization, detoxification, defogging in rainy days, indoor appliance protection, universal model
- Detox: Too high temperature in the car will release 20 times the excess toluene (toluene toxicity can cause miscarriage in pregnant women and blood cancer in children)
- Deodorization: Release smoke from the car to keep the air fresh and cool: When you enter the car for the first time, there is no sultry feeling.
- Health: Air convection is beneficial for you and your family to enjoy a non-toxic and harmless driving environment, electrical protection: electrical and electronic equipment in the vehicle will affect its performance and service life due to high temperature.
- Energy saving: When the temperature of the car is in a non-high temperature state, the air conditioning in the car will be effective after each driving, making your car cool and fuel saving.
The manual also references testing against Q/320581FSC001-2006 and warns that catalogue parameters may change without notice. Confirm the exact model’s current technical sheet before using these ranges for a new installation, especially if the product designation or market has changed.
Installation: why a DIY fitting is not appropriate
ICE Solair’s manual states: “All installations must be completed by a qualified air conditioning technician who has been certified by ICE Solair.” It also warns: “Failure to install using an ICE Solair Certified Installer will void your Warranty.” Those are product-specific requirements, not optional suggestions.
A split system involves refrigerant pipework, electrical connections, condensate drainage, pressure testing and commissioning. An installer must also select a safe location, preserve outdoor airflow and verify that the indoor unit drains correctly. A mechanically secure wall bracket does not prove that the refrigeration circuit or electrical protection is correct.
- Verify local eligibility. Ask the distributor whether the model is currently supplied in your country and whether certified installers are still available there.
- Request written scope. The quote should identify the indoor and outdoor model numbers, pipe length assumptions, electrical work, drainage, brackets and commissioning tests.
- Confirm certification. Obtain the technician’s ICE Solair certification status before signing, because the manual links warranty validity to certified installation.
- Record commissioning information. Keep the serial numbers, installation date, refrigerant test results, controls configuration and installer contact details.
- Test both modes. Have the installer demonstrate cooling, reverse-cycle heating, condensate drainage and the controller’s fault indications before handover.
Current company status, model range, certification networks, warranty wording, prices and regional availability are not established by the older Architecture & Design material. Obtain those details in writing from a current supplier rather than assuming that a historic listing represents today’s market.
Maintenance the owner can perform
The manual’s routine guidance is straightforward but important. Keep both indoor and outdoor airflow unobstructed, close windows and doors while conditioning, limit direct solar gain with curtains or shutters, and rinse the filter screens every 15 days.

Every 15 days: rinse the indoor filters
- Switch the unit off and isolate power if the manufacturer’s local procedure requires it.
- Open the indoor-unit front panel and remove the filter screens without bending them.
- Rinse the screens with clean water. Do not reinstall them while wet.
- Let the filters dry completely in a shaded, ventilated place.
- Refit the screens securely and close the panel before restarting.
Shorten the interval if the home is dusty, if occupants smoke, or if pets shed heavily. A filter that looks clean can still restrict airflow; the practical warning signs are weak delivery, longer runtimes or an unusual change in sound.
Before each season
- Check that curtains, furniture and decorations do not block the indoor outlet or return air path.
- Clear leaves, dust and stored items from around the outdoor unit.
- Look for crushed pipe insulation, damaged cables or a blocked condensate outlet, but do not open the sealed refrigeration circuit.
- Close doors and windows during operation and use shutters or curtains to reduce direct solar heat entering the room.
Refrigerant charging, coil cleaning that requires disassembly, electrical repairs and fault diagnosis belong to a qualified technician. Keep records of filter cleaning and professional service so a change in performance can be traced.
Heating performance and noise claims
Because ICE Solair is reverse-cycle, the same system can provide heating as well as cooling. The manual says reverse-cycle heating uses less electricity than 100% electrical heating. That is a manufacturer claim and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed percentage reduction; actual consumption depends on outdoor temperature, thermostat settings, room heat loss and the equipment’s operating state.
The manual attributes quieter operation to off-centre blades, foam air ducting and a high-performance fan system. Those design features may reduce noise, but perceived sound still depends on mounting, vibration transmission, fan speed and the room’s acoustics. Ask the installer to isolate the outdoor unit from the wall or slab where appropriate and to verify that panels and brackets are tight.
ICE Solair thermal assist versus a PV-electric air conditioner
| Decision factor | ICE Solair design described in the manual | PV-electric air-conditioning approach |
|---|---|---|
| How solar energy enters the system | Solar-thermal/ambient heat supplements electrical energy and is intended to reduce compressor demand. | Photovoltaic panels generate electricity that can supply a conventional air conditioner. |
| Direct sunlight requirement | Designed to use ambient air temperature; direct sunshine is not required for operation. | Panel output varies with sunlight, shading and system design. |
| Night operation | Can operate day or night because ambient air remains the energy source. | Needs grid electricity, stored energy or another supply after solar generation falls. |
| Battery requirement | No battery is identified as part of the documented thermal-assist concept. | A battery is optional in grid-connected systems but needed for solar-only operation after generation stops. |
| Installation | Manual requires an ICE Solair-certified air-conditioning technician; unauthorized installation voids the warranty. | Requires appropriately licensed air-conditioning work plus electrical and PV installation governed by local rules. |
| Climate limits | Manual lists 18°C–53°C for cooling and −7°C–24°C for heating. | Limits depend on the selected air conditioner, inverter, panels and local installation. |
| Verified performance data | Public material includes an “up to 50%” supplier claim, not a universal guarantee. | Performance must be calculated from the specific air conditioner, PV capacity, tariff and operating profile. |
The better option depends on the site. If you already have suitable PV generation, a conventional high-efficiency heat pump may integrate more simply. If you want a thermal-assisted split system and can obtain certified service, ICE Solair’s approach may be worth investigating. Compare complete installed systems, not just the outdoor unit or a headline percentage.

Cost, warranty and availability questions to settle before ordering
The available material does not establish a current retail price, installation price, model list or shipping coverage. The Architecture & Design reference is from 2011, and catalogue parameters may change without notice. Do not use a historic listing to infer that a unit is still manufactured or sold in your region.
Ask a current supplier for:
- the exact model number and current technical data sheet;
- cooling and heating capacity under stated test conditions;
- the certified-installer requirement and a list of technicians serving your address;
- full warranty terms, exclusions and the process for preserving coverage;
- replacement-filter availability and service intervals;
- electrical requirements, allowable pipe lengths and condensate arrangements;
- expected delivery time, parts support and end-of-life service arrangements.
Have the quote separate equipment, labour, electrical upgrades, brackets, condensate work and any roof or wall penetrations. A lower equipment price can be misleading if certified installation or difficult access is added later.
When ICE Solair is a sensible candidate
- You need both cooling and heating from one reverse-cycle system.
- A certified ICE Solair technician is available locally and will support the installation.
- Your climate falls within the manual’s stated operating ranges for the mode you use.
- You can keep indoor and outdoor airflow clear and follow the 15-day filter-rinsing schedule.
- You are willing to evaluate savings against measured household consumption rather than relying on the “up to 50%” claim.
When to pause or choose another design
- No current supplier can verify product availability, parts support or certified installation in your region.
- Your expected outdoor conditions regularly exceed the listed cooling or heating limits.
- You need an off-grid system that operates without grid electricity; the documented ICE Solair concept is not presented as a battery-based, electricity-independent air conditioner.
- You cannot provide clear airflow around the outdoor unit or maintain the filters.
- The quote does not identify the model, warranty conditions, commissioning work or who will service the system.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
| Symptom | Safe owner checks | When to call the technician |
|---|---|---|
| Weak airflow | Rinse and dry the filters; remove obstructions from indoor and outdoor air paths. | Airflow remains weak after cleaning, or the fan makes an abnormal sound. |
| Water dripping indoors | Stop operation if water threatens electrics; check that the outlet is not visibly blocked. | Any persistent leak, frozen coil, damaged drain or operation outside the stated temperature range. |
| Unit stops in extreme weather | Check the outdoor temperature against the manual’s mode range and allow conditions to moderate. | Repeated protective shutdowns within the range or any electrical fault indication. |
| Higher-than-expected electricity use | Check doors, windows, curtains, filters and thermostat settings; record weather and runtime. | Consumption stays high after basic checks, or cooling/heating capacity has changed. |
| Excessive noise or vibration | Look for loose external objects without opening the unit. | Rattling, grinding, refrigerant noise or vibration from the mount requires professional inspection. |
Never bypass a protection device, handle refrigerant or remove electrical covers yourself. Those actions can create a safety hazard and may invalidate warranty coverage.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The documented product concept is clear: ICE Solair is a solar-thermal-assisted, reverse-cycle split air conditioner that still uses electricity. The manual supports the installation requirement, operating ranges, filter interval, ambient-air operation and general maintenance practices. The “up to 50%” reduction, quieter operation and lower electricity use for reverse-cycle heating are manufacturer or supplier claims, not independent guarantees.
Before committing money, obtain current regional information and a site-specific quotation. Confirm that the model, installer certification, warranty and parts supply exist today, then compare measured or credibly modelled energy use with alternatives available at your address.
