At a school in Sujata village near Bodh Gaya, Bihar, artists from India and Japan spent about three weeks painting the building with mud and working with children in workshops. A 2016 report described the project as a way to use cultural exchange to bring attention to local concerns, including poverty, education and employment—not as a program shown to have reduced those problems.
A school building became the festival’s canvas
The Wall Art Festival took place at Niranjana Public Welfare School in Sujata village, near Bodh Gaya. In the account published by Scroll.in in 2016, artists from India and Japan spent roughly three weeks making art on the school building and interacting with students through workshops. The report described the event as an annual festival at that time; its present-day status is not established by the available reporting.

Artist Yusuke Asai, who the report said had participated for three consecutive years, covered classroom walls and a ceiling with paintings made from mud. For pigment, he and the children collected soil from different places in the village and mixed it with water.
Making—and washing away—the mud paintings
The process involved more than applying pigment to a wall. According to the report, Asai later enlisted children to wash the paintings away, returning the mud to the soil. The account interpreted this as a lesson about life as a cycle. That is the report’s interpretation of the activity, not a measured finding about what students learned.

Art as a setting for discussing village concerns
The festival’s stated hope was that artistic and cultural exchange could help surface issues facing nearby villages, including poverty, education and employment. Working with students gave the project a setting for interaction around those subjects. But the 2016 account provides no outcome evaluation, comparison group or measured change in poverty, school access or joblessness. It supports describing the festival as a discussion-oriented initiative, not claiming that the paintings solved or demonstrably reduced those problems.

The school’s earlier history, as reported in 2016
The feature also placed the school in a longer story of support from Japan. It reported that about 50 Tokyo Gakugei University students donated money they had earned through part-time jobs in 2006 to an NGO to help construct a new school building. The same 2016 report said enrollment had reached around 400 students, from nursery through Class 7, by 2010. Those figures describe events and enrollment reported at the time; they should not be read as current numbers.
How the festival relates to Bihar’s Madhubani tradition
Bihar is also known for Madhubani, or Mithila, painting, a distinct tradition that offers useful context for thinking about wall-based art in the state. Bihar Tourism’s overview of Madhubani painting says it was traditionally made on freshly plastered mud walls and floors, and is now also produced on cloth, handmade paper and canvas. It lists fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens and matchsticks among the tools used, alongside natural dyes and pigments.

- Multiple Uses: These cups are designed for automotive paint, epoxy resin, and various art and creative projects. They can be used for body shops, woodworking, and industrial coatings.
The available sources do not identify Asai’s festival paintings as Madhubani paintings. The traditions should not be conflated simply because both can involve painted surfaces associated with mud. Bihar Tourism says Madhubani painting supports about 20,000–25,000 artisan families in Madhubani district and elsewhere in Bihar; the page gives no publication year, so that figure is not a dated current employment count.

The central account is a 2016 feature republished by Scroll.in; a 2016 republication by The News Minute repeats that account rather than providing independent primary evidence. The reporting establishes what the festival was described as doing then: bringing artists and students together to make temporary mud paintings and engage with local concerns. It does not confirm whether the festival continues in the same format, provide current school enrollment, or demonstrate measurable social outcomes.
