India observed its 79th Independence Day on Friday, 15 August 2025. The central national ceremony took place at Delhi’s Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the National Flag and addressed the nation. The announced theme was “Naya Bharat,” linked by the Ministry of Defence to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

When was Indian Independence Day 2025?
Indian Independence Day fell on 15 August 2025. The day marks India’s independence from British rule in 1947 and commemorates the freedom movement and the people whose efforts and sacrifices helped bring it about.
The Indian Independence Act 1947 came into effect on 15 August 1947, transferring legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly, according to the Ministry of Defence’s official history of the observance.

Why was it called the 79th Independence Day?
“79th Independence Day” was the official label for the 2025 annual observance. It is not the same as saying that 79 full years had passed since independence: India became independent on 15 August 1947, and 2025 marked 78 years since that date.

What happened at the Red Fort?
The Red Fort in Delhi hosted the central national ceremony on 15 August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the National Flag and delivered the customary address to the nation. The Ministry of Defence describes the annual Delhi programme as a national ceremony built around the flag observance and the Prime Minister’s address.
The Red Fort is also part of the observance’s history: Jawaharlal Nehru raised the flag above its Lahori Gate on 15 August 1947. Subsequent Independence Day ceremonies have continued the tradition of the incumbent Prime Minister raising the flag and addressing the country.

What was the theme of Independence Day 2025?
The Ministry of Defence’s advance announcement named “Naya Bharat” as the 2025 celebration theme and connected it with the Government’s vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. This was the announced theme for the 2025 celebration.
How did people participate in Har Ghar Tiranga?
Har Ghar Tiranga was a voluntary public-participation campaign, distinct from the central ceremony. Its 2025 programme ran in three phases: 2–8 August, 9–13 August and 13–15 August. Official campaign material described flag-awareness activities, local events and household flag displays. The campaign encouraged people to bring home the National Flag; displaying a flag or joining an activity was not a requirement for observing Independence Day.

In a Ministry of Culture release published on 16 August 2025, the government described that year’s edition as the fourth since the campaign launched in 2022. The release reported 7.50 crore uploaded selfies and more than 9 lakh volunteers for the 2025 campaign. Those are campaign figures reported after the event, not a measure of current participation or public opinion.

The campaign complemented the national ceremony; it did not replace it. A household flag display was one optional way to take part.
What did the President say on the eve?
In her eve-of-Independence-Day address on 14 August 2025, President Droupadi Murmu recalled generations who struggled against colonial rule and paid tribute to those whose sacrifices won independence. She said, “The fifteenth of August is a date etched in our collective memory.”
