Infiorata is a family of Italian festivals in which streets become temporary artworks made from flower petals, leaves, seeds and other untreated plant material. Many developed alongside religious processions, especially Corpus Domini, but the history, schedule, technique and purpose differ from town to town. Spello, Genzano di Roma and Noto show that variety particularly clearly.

What is an infiorata?
An infiorata (plural: infiorate) is a temporary street composition assembled from flowers and other botanical material. Artists and volunteers arrange the material directly on a road, piazza or stairway to form geometric carpets, pictures and large-scale scenes. The work is designed to be viewed during a short festival and is usually dismantled after the event or affected by the procession that passes over it.
In several towns, the artworks remain connected to a religious feast. Corpus Domini—the Catholic celebration traditionally observed on the ninth Sunday after Easter—is a major date for events such as Spello and Genzano. Other infiorate use civic, artistic or contemporary themes. Noto’s 2026 edition, for example, presented pop-culture icons, music and artistic avant-gardes rather than a single traditional religious program.

Why the history changes from one town to another
There is no single founding date for every Italian infiorata. Each municipality preserves its own account of how a local custom developed.
Spello: from a procession route to elaborate pictures
The Comune di Spello’s archival account records a 1831 request to keep a procession route clean and scatter flowers or greenery for a procession accompanying Bishop Ignazio Cadolini. Over time, that practical decoration developed into artistic street compositions. The municipality describes today’s carpets and pictures as religiously inspired and notes early-20th-century visual documentation by painter and mayor Benvenuto Crispoldi.

Genzano di Roma: a Corpus Domini tradition dating to 1778
Genzano’s municipality dates its traditional Corpus Domini Infiorata to 1778. Its 2026 event was described as the 248th edition. The festival is centered on Via Italo Belardi, where a long floral installation turns the street into a continuous viewing route.
Noto: a themed contemporary presentation
Noto’s municipal announcement called its 2026 event the 47th edition and placed it on Via Corrado Nicolaci. The municipality says the event generally takes place in May. In 2026, the theme was “La Cultura Pop si racconta portando in scena le icone, la musica e le avanguardie artistiche che hanno rivoluzionato il mondo.” An edition number alone does not establish the festival’s founding year.

How the flower artworks are made
Spello’s untreated-petal technique
Spello’s teams plan designs months in advance, collect or prepare plant material and coordinate the final overnight installation. The organizers state that the compositions use vegetal and floral elements without chemical treatment, preservatives, artificial colors or powdered colorants. Petals are laid on the road rather than glued.
“L’unicità del carattere della manifestazione è certamente dato dalla tecnica di esecuzione che consiste nell’uso esclusivo di elementi vegetali non trattati con agenti chimici o conservativi né con coloranti artificiali o polverizzati; in questo modo il petalo, adagiato sul suolo stradale, (non si può incollare) regna sovrano in un insieme coinvolgente di colori e profumi.”

Genzano’s maquette-to-street workflow
Genzano’s official festival account describes a reduced preliminary design, or maquette, made by the master flower artists. Teams then enlarge and reproduce that design on the street. For the 2026 edition, the festival account estimated about 400,000 flowers—mostly carnations in different colors—combined with other botanical material.

Recent festival examples: the 2026 editions

| Genzano di Roma | June 13–15 on Via Italo Belardi. | The municipality reported 1,890 m² over 250 m. The festival site separately described approximately 2,000 m² and about 400,000 flowers; the area estimates are not identical. |

Spello, Genzano or Noto: which experience fits?

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- For a religious procession and overnight making: Spello’s 2026 program combined overnight construction, a Sunday procession and free access.
- For a long-established Corpus Domini tradition: Genzano traces its event to 1778 and presents a large linear installation along Via Italo Belardi.
- For a contemporary themed exhibition: Noto’s 2026 edition used pop-culture subject matter on Via Corrado Nicolaci and offered several days of paid viewing.
- For route scale: Spello’s organizers described 50–60 carpets along about 1.5 km; Genzano’s published figures describe a 250 m installation, with differing area estimates from the municipality and festival site.
When does the Infiorata take place?
There is no single national date. Spello and Genzano traditionally organize their main events around Corpus Domini, whose calendar date changes annually. Noto generally holds its event in May. Use the year beside every date when planning, and confirm the next edition on official municipal or festival pages rather than extrapolating from 2026.
Visitor details worth checking before you go
- Viewing hours: Some festivals concentrate activity into one night and a procession morning; others keep the finished works open for several days.
- Admission: Spello’s 2026 event was free, while Noto charged €5 for general admission and €3 for school groups.
- Access and crowds: Spello’s municipality has reported 60,000–100,000 arrivals annually since 2007. That is a local reported figure, not an audited national attendance statistic. The organizers separately reported more than 40,000 visitors in 2005.
- Services: Spello’s museum information describes visitor points, businesses open during the flower night and about 85 volunteers managing service and traffic at a past event. Those historical arrangements do not guarantee the same services in a future edition.
- Walking conditions: The artworks occupy streets and routes used by visitors and, in some cases, a procession. Expect dense pedestrian traffic, restricted vehicle access and limited opportunities to step onto the designs.
How to appreciate the art respectfully
- Arrive during the published viewing window, especially if you want to see the finished work before a procession begins.
- Stay behind barriers or follow volunteer directions; the petals are arranged directly on the ground and cannot be treated like a permanent pavement mural.
- Look for the relationship between the individual materials, the enlarged design and the street architecture rather than judging the work only as a photograph.
- Expect the appearance to change with light, wind, foot traffic and the event’s closing procession.
- Verify the current route, admission rules and accessibility information with the municipality or festival organization before traveling.
The Bottom Line
Infiorata is not one standardized festival but a group of local traditions. Spello emphasizes untreated petals, overnight collaboration and a procession; Genzano brings a Corpus Domini tradition dating to 1778 onto a long street installation; Noto demonstrates how the form can support contemporary themes. The right event depends on the year, town, theme and viewing format, so use each municipality’s current program for travel planning.
