Short answer: Choose inPixio Photo Studio for a simpler route to object removal, background and sky changes, photomontages, and guided creative effects. Choose PaintShop Pro for the broader editing system: RAW development, layers, masks, compositing, batch processing, scripts, cataloging, plugins, and design tools. PaintShop Pro is the stronger all-round editor; inPixio is the more focused choice when speed and approachability matter more than depth.

What each program is designed to do
inPixio Photo Studio 12
inPixio is a photo-enhancement package built around getting a usable result quickly. Its documented tools include Erase Objects, cloning, patching, automatic corrections, LUTs, frames, textures, blur and grain effects, photomontages, text, background removal, and sky replacement. Professional and Ultimate add the dedicated background and sky tools that are absent from Standard. Ultimate also bundles Photo Focus, Photo Maximizer, and other companion tools.
That does not make inPixio merely a basic editor. It can handle meaningful compositing and retouching. The distinction is that its published feature emphasis is photo cleanup and guided creativity rather than a full production environment of layers, masks, scripts, catalogs, and plugins.

PaintShop Pro
PaintShop Pro combines correction and retouching with a much wider Windows image-editing workflow. The official materials describe RAW development through AfterShot Lab, layers and masks, blend modes, text and vector objects, painting and drawing, HDR, focus stacking, 360-degree workflows, batch processing, scripting, photo organization, PSD import/export, and third-party plugin support. AI-assisted tools are available in the presented product family, but “AI” is not a guarantee of clean results on every photograph.
Ease of use: quick start versus long-term control
inPixio is the easier starting point for someone who wants to import a picture, remove a distraction, adjust the look, and export without learning a large workspace. PaintShop Pro exposes more concepts and tools, so the initial learning curve is likely steeper. In return, you can stay in one application as your work grows from a single correction to a layered composite, a repeatable batch, or a cataloged collection.
That is a distinction between initial simplicity and workflow efficiency, not an objective usability score. A G2 comparison reports higher average ease-of-use and ease-of-setup ratings for inPixio and stronger support ratings for PaintShop Pro, but the samples are uneven and represent reviewer perceptions rather than a controlled test: G2 comparison.
Object removal, backgrounds, and skies
For a quick cleanup, both products are plausible choices. inPixio offers Erase Objects, Clone, Patch, Remove Background, Replace Sky, and photomontage tools. PaintShop Pro offers Object Remover, SmartClone, Magic Move, Magic Fill, selections, masks, and layer-based retouching.
PaintShop Pro’s advantage is not a promise that every automatic fill will look better. It is the ability to repair a mediocre automatic result manually with a selection, mask, clone layer, blend mode, or additional retouching. inPixio’s advantage is the more direct path to a finished cutout or creative replacement, particularly in Professional and Ultimate.

For demanding work, judge both programs on several image types: a person against a plain background, wires or signs in a busy landscape, repeating architectural texture, hair or foliage, and a large object crossing a complex background. Check automatic speed, edge quality, texture reconstruction, manual cleanup, export quality, and whether the needed feature is included in your tier. Hair, glass, shadows, and repeating patterns still require inspection regardless of the marketing label.
RAW editing and camera support
PaintShop Pro has the clearer documented RAW workflow in the sources reviewed. Its official materials advertise AfterShot Lab and RAW support for more than 800 camera models, including formats such as ARW, CR2, CR3, DNG, NEF, NRW, ORF, PEF, RAF, RW2, and SR2: official product information. “Over 800 models” is not the same as a guarantee for a newly released camera; verify your exact model, firmware, and software update.
The reviewed inPixio documentation does not provide an equivalent current camera-support count or detailed compatibility table. It is therefore safer to say that PaintShop Pro has better documented RAW credentials than to claim that inPixio cannot open RAW files.
Layers, masks, and compositing
PaintShop Pro is the safer choice when a project depends on editable layers, masks, blend modes, text or vector objects, PSD interchange, plugins, or repeated revisions. Those capabilities let you keep a subject, background, adjustment, and typography separate and revise them later.
inPixio documents photomontage creation, but the reviewed feature material does not establish an equally comprehensive layer-and-mask production workflow. For a one-off collage, that may not matter. For a design you will revisit, localize, or repurpose, PaintShop Pro’s structure is a material advantage.

Batch processing, scripts, and organization
PaintShop Pro explicitly documents batch processing and scripts. You can apply adjustments, resize a folder, add frames or watermarks, and repeat recorded operations—useful for event photography, product catalogs, social exports, and consistent client delivery.
Its Manage workspace also supports catalogs, keyword tags, metadata, browsing, and batch workflows. This is not automatically a replacement for every cloud asset manager or Lightroom-style ecosystem, but it matters if you manage thousands of family, event, or client photographs. The reviewed inPixio sources do not establish equivalent cataloging or scripting capabilities, so PaintShop Pro has the stronger documented automation case.
Design and creative work
PaintShop Pro extends into greeting cards, posters, social graphics, scrapbooking, and simple illustration with text, shapes, vector objects, painting, drawing, preset shapes, frames, and clipping-style workflows. Ultimate bundles additional creative applications and assets.
inPixio includes text, LUTs, frames, textures, effects, and photomontage tools, making it capable for photo-led social posts and collages. Its documented emphasis remains more photo-centric; choose PaintShop Pro when the design component is as important as the photograph.
AI and automatic features: read the fine print

- Can you refine the result with selections, masks, or layers?
- Does it preserve an editable original?
- Is an internet connection required?
- Is it included in Standard, Professional, or Ultimate?
- Can the same operation be repeated across a folder?
inPixio’s background removal, sky replacement, and object tools are tier-dependent. PaintShop Pro’s automatic tools become more valuable when combined with its manual correction and non-destructive workflow.

inPixio Photo Studio 12
inPixio’s support page published January 22, 2026 lists annual prices of $49.99 for Standard, $79.99 for Professional, and $99.99 for Ultimate. A simple three-year arithmetic illustration is $149.97, $239.97, and $299.97 respectively, excluding tax, promotions, price changes, and renewal differences. inPixio warns that a discounted purchase may renew at the regular price: pricing information.
Annual subscriptions include upgrades to future versions. A lifetime license provides permanent access to the purchased version but does not automatically include future major-version upgrades. The limited free Windows edition includes crop, adjustments, vignetting, LUTs, frames, and textures; an inPixio account and sign-in are required: free-version details.
PaintShop Pro
PaintShop Pro is positioned as subscription-free and advertises a 30-day trial and 30-day money-back guarantee. The researched pages did not expose a current US full-license price, so do not treat an upgrade offer as the price for a new buyer. The official purchase path may require ownership of a previous licensed PaintShop version; academic, Home and Student, OEM, and Not for Resale licenses are excluded from upgrade eligibility: purchase and requirements page.

Before checkout, confirm whether you are seeing a full license, upgrade, bundle, or regional offer, and whether a future major release would require another purchase.
Which should you buy?
Choose inPixio Photo Studio if you…
- want the shortest path from import to a cleaned-up image;
- mainly remove objects, replace backgrounds or skies, make collages, or apply creative effects;
- want to test a limited free Windows version;
- are comfortable with annual pricing or specifically want upgrades included;
- do not need extensive scripting, cataloging, plugins, or layer-mask revisions.
For background removal and sky replacement, compare PaintShop Pro against inPixio Professional, not Standard. Ultimate is worthwhile only if you will use its additional applications and tools.
Choose PaintShop Pro if you…
- work with RAW files and want documented camera support;
- need layers, masks, blend modes, PSD interchange, or plugins;
- edit groups of images or repeat the same operation;
- want catalogs, keyword tags, and metadata tools;
- need one Windows application for photography, design, compositing, and basic illustration;
- prefer subscription-free positioning and are willing to learn a broader interface.
Choose neither without more research if you…
- use macOS as your primary system;
- need cloud synchronization, mobile editing, or browser collaboration as core requirements;
- must support a newly released camera and cannot verify its exact RAW compatibility;
- require professional tethering, advanced color management, or enterprise asset management not established in these sources.
Alternatives by workflow
If neither Windows editor fits, consider Affinity Photo for advanced raster editing without Adobe’s subscription model, Adobe Photoshop for the broadest professional ecosystem, GIMP for a free open-source workflow, or Photopea for occasional browser-based PSD-style edits. Check each vendor’s current pricing, platform support, and privacy terms separately.

There is no universal winner. inPixio Photo Studio is the better purchase when your priority is approachable, guided cleanup and creative photo effects—especially in Professional or Ultimate. PaintShop Pro is the better long-term tool for serious Windows photographers and makers who need RAW control, layered composites, repeatable batch work, organization, plugins, and design capabilities. Pick the workflow you will actually use, then verify the edition, camera support, license type, and renewal terms before paying.
