A 484-square-foot former artist’s studio in Paris’s 11th arrondissement works because its designers use height, not extra floor area, as the primary source of space. Ceilings higher than 13 feet make room for a mezzanine bedroom, while a desk beneath it can become a second sleeping place.

Interior designer Caroline Pusset and photographer Thomas Tissandier also keep the main room adaptable. Storage and a bathroom sit in the basement, circulation is concentrated around a split staircase, and movable furniture lets the apartment switch from a home to a working photo studio. The result is utilitarian minimalism: every major element earns its place through use, not decoration alone.

A small apartment planned as a tall volume

The apartment began as a former artist’s studio near Place de la Nation. Rather than divide the limited footprint into a series of small rooms, Pusset and her partner treated the section of the apartment—the relationship between floor and ceiling—as the key design opportunity. Pusset, who founded Studio Rœus with her sister, says the ceilings are more than 13 feet high, which immediately suggested treating the home as a loft.

That decision changes the problem from “Where can another room fit?” to “Which activities can occupy different heights?” Sleeping moves upward, work remains below, and the main floor stays open enough for cooking, sitting, moving equipment, or hosting a photography shoot. The strategy does not make the apartment physically larger; it gives the same footprint more useful layers.

How the mezzanine organizes the plan

Bedroom above the main room

The mezzanine contains the bedroom and sits over part of the principal living space. It creates a clear separation between rest and daytime activity without requiring full-height walls across the apartment. From the main room, the sleeping area reads as an elevated zone rather than another enclosed box, preserving the loft’s sense of volume.

Pusset describes the move plainly: “We added a mezzanine in the main room to house the bedroom.” The statement captures the project’s practical logic. The bedroom is not an ornamental platform; it is the intervention that allows the rest of the plan to remain flexible.

A desk that can become a bed

Below the mezzanine, a desk provides a dedicated work surface and an additional sleeping option. This dual role is important because Tissandier lives and works in the apartment. When guests arrive or a shoot requires a different arrangement, the area can support sleep without permanently becoming a second bedroom. During ordinary days, it remains useful as a workstation.

Designing one zone for two functions requires clear floor area and furniture that can move or fold away. In this home, that flexibility is part of the architecture rather than an afterthought. The desk occupies the lower level created by the mezzanine, so the vertical addition produces both a bedroom and a work zone.

The main floor: entry, kitchen, living, and circulation

The entry, kitchen, and living area share the principal floor. Keeping these functions together reduces the number of partitions and allows daylight, movement, and sightlines to pass through the compact plan. The kitchen is an IKEA installation customized with Cubro cabinet fronts, walnut handles, and a stainless-steel worktop made for the project.

At the rear, a split staircase divides the plan. An office sits to one side, while the stairs rise toward the bedroom. This arrangement makes circulation perform several jobs at once: it connects levels, defines the office edge, and gives the back of the room a sense of structure without closing it off with a corridor.

The staircase is therefore more than access to the mezzanine. It is the organizing spine of the apartment. One side supports focused work; the other leads to private space above. The front of the home can remain visually open because the functional separation happens deeper in the plan and across different elevations.

Why the basement matters

A basement beneath the living area contains a large walk-in closet and a bathroom at the back. Moving these bulky, essential functions downstairs keeps wardrobes, toiletries, and other storage demands from crowding the main room. The compact upper level can stay dedicated to living, cooking, working, and circulation.

Architectural Digest reports that this particular basement was dry and free of humidity. That is a description of this apartment, not a general recommendation that every basement is suitable for bedrooms, closets, or bathrooms. Any renovation involving a lower level would require its own assessment of moisture, ventilation, access, drainage, and local building requirements.

The storage strategy is nevertheless clear: place high-volume, less frequently displayed items outside the primary living zone. Because the closet is walk-in rather than a series of cabinets scattered around the room, the visible spaces can use fewer pieces of furniture and maintain a calmer appearance.

A restrained palette that balances hard and warm surfaces

The finishes combine an industrial vocabulary with natural materials. Walls and concrete floors are painted an off-white shade commonly associated with garages, giving the shell a continuous, utilitarian background. Stainless steel appears repeatedly—in the kitchen niche and worktop, on switches and radiators, around an exposed ventilation duct, and on the bedroom’s glass wall.

Wood and stone prevent that metal-and-concrete framework from feeling cold. Okoumé wood lines the wall behind the headboard. Lighter oak appears in the bathroom and dressing room, while a travertine sink adds a tactile, mineral surface. Blue-patterned tiles introduce the strongest decorative note without changing the restrained overall scheme.

Material or finish Where it appears Role in the apartment
Off-white paint Walls and concrete floors Creates a continuous, workshop-like envelope
Stainless steel Kitchen worktop and niche, switches, radiators, ventilation duct, bedroom glass wall Provides a durable industrial thread across rooms
Okoumé wood Behind the bedroom headboard Adds warmth to the sleeping zone
Light oak Bathroom and dressing room Softens service spaces with a lighter timber tone
Travertine Bathroom sink Introduces a natural stone texture
Blue-patterned tile Tilework in the apartment Adds pattern within the limited palette

Using the same metal across unrelated components also makes practical infrastructure legible as part of the design. A radiator, switch, duct, or worktop does not need to disappear if its finish belongs to the larger material system. The approach turns necessary hardware into visual continuity.

Furniture chosen for movement and changing uses

The furnishings support the apartment’s ability to change configuration. Named pieces include Pascal Mourgue’s Lune d’Argent bar stools, identified with Zangra; a vintage Kimba sofa by Michel Ducaroy; a vintage stainless-steel coffee table; a Zangra pendant; and a Respiro wall lamp by DCW.

The presence of vintage furniture is significant less as a shopping list than as evidence of a lived-in mix. The feature does not provide model numbers, current availability, or buying links, and the vintage pieces should not be treated as guaranteed products for a present-day purchase. Their editorial role is to show how movable, characterful objects can coexist with custom cabinetry and architectural interventions.

Several elements are bespoke or project-specific, including the kitchen fronts, stainless-steel worktop, storage, and other furnishings. This distinction matters when translating the apartment to another home: the transferable idea is the relationship between fixed infrastructure and movable objects, not an assumption that every component can be ordered as shown.

A home that can become a photo studio

Tissandier’s work determines many of the apartment’s practical requirements. Pusset says, “Thomas, who lives and works here, needs a lot of space and, above all, for everything to be easily movable.” The open main floor, the desk beneath the mezzanine, and the storage shifted downstairs all serve that need.

She describes the intended changeover directly: “The home can be turned into a photo studio and then easily back into a comfortable living space when a shoot is finished.” That is the strongest reason to call the design utilitarian. Minimalism here is not simply a low number of objects or a white color scheme. It is the removal of obstacles to a real activity, followed by a quick return to domestic comfort.

A photo studio needs clear paths, room for equipment, and surfaces that can tolerate frequent rearrangement. A residence needs places to sit, sleep, cook, and store personal belongings. The apartment handles the conflict by making the large central area available to both uses, while assigning specialized functions to the mezzanine, basement, and compact office zone.

What the project reveals about utilitarian minimalism

Space is gained through section, not visual tricks

The mezzanine is a physical addition of usable area made possible by the tall ceiling. It does not rely on mirrors, pale colors, or small-scale furniture to create the impression of size, although the restrained finishes help preserve openness. The decisive move is stacking compatible activities vertically.

Flexibility is designed into the plan

The desk’s second life as a sleeping area and the clear main floor show that flexibility must be planned before furniture arrives. A room can only switch roles easily when circulation, storage, and clearances support the change. In this apartment, the split staircase and basement closet help protect that adaptability.

Storage is treated as architecture

The walk-in closet is not an accessory added after the living room is furnished. It is part of the spatial solution, placed below so clothing and household volume do not dominate the rooms used every day. This keeps the visible palette quieter without requiring the owners to own fewer things than their work and life demand.

Industrial finishes need counterweights

Concrete, exposed ventilation, stainless steel, and an off-white shell could read as severe on their own. Okoumé, oak, travertine, blue-patterned tile, and upholstered vintage furniture supply variation in touch, color, and texture. The balance allows practical materials to remain visible while keeping the home comfortable.

How to adapt the principles to another small loft

  1. Measure the vertical volume first. Record floor-to-ceiling height, structural beams, windows, and services before assuming a mezzanine is possible. A tall room is only useful if a raised level can meet safety, access, headroom, and permit requirements in its jurisdiction.
  2. Assign activities to levels. Put the function that benefits most from separation—often sleeping—above, and keep the lower level available for work or social use. Check that stairs or a ladder do not consume the clear area you are trying to gain.
  3. Reserve one zone for more than one purpose. Choose a desk, platform, or seating arrangement that can support a second activity without requiring a full room conversion. Plan where bedding, equipment, or folding furniture will go when it is not in use.
  4. Move bulky storage out of the social room. A closet, utility room, or carefully assessed lower level can absorb volume that would otherwise spread across the living area. For basements, investigate moisture, ventilation, drainage, and access rather than assuming conditions match this Paris apartment.
  5. Create a material hierarchy. Select one durable industrial finish as a repeating thread, then add a small number of warmer materials for touch and visual relief. Repetition across switches, ducts, radiators, or cabinetry can make infrastructure feel intentional.
  6. Test the changeover physically. Mark the footprint of furniture, photo equipment, or guest bedding on the floor and walk the routes between them. If the room cannot clear quickly on paper, it will not become a practical studio or guest area in daily use.

Limits of the example

This loft demonstrates one response to a specific building: a former studio with unusually high ceilings, a basement, and owners whose professional work benefits from open floor area. The feature does not establish that a mezzanine is suitable for every small apartment, that a basement will be dry elsewhere, or that the named products are currently available.

Its value is the way the decisions reinforce one another. Height supports the bedroom; the bedroom leaves the main floor open; the open floor supports photography; the basement protects that openness by absorbing storage and bathing functions; and the material palette makes the practical framework feel deliberate. Remove one element and the same result may require a different solution.

The practical takeaway

This Paris loft feels larger because it is organized in three dimensions and because its objects are expected to work hard. The mezzanine adds a sleeping level, the space below remains available for work, the split staircase concentrates circulation, and the basement keeps storage and the bathroom out of the main room. Stainless steel and off-white surfaces establish a tough shell, while wood, travertine, tile, and movable furniture make it livable.

For anyone planning a compact home, the lesson is not to copy a finish schedule or a furniture list. Start with the building’s height, identify which functions can share space, protect a genuinely clear area for the activities that matter, and place storage where it will not constantly interrupt daily life. That is how this 484-square-foot loft turns constraint into a working design system.
