Inside an Interior Stylist’s Period-Home Kitchen Renovation: What Changed, What It Cost and Why

Lucy Glade-Wright’s kitchen renovation modernised a 1940 Edwardian house without stripping away its pressed-metal ceilings, stained-glass windows or old-house character. The finished scheme used dark stainless-steel appliances, restrained cabinetry and minimal styling, while the work also solved practical problems with storage, surfaces and day-to-day circulation.

The makeover was presented as a $20,000 project, yet the published line items add to $21,626. Those are the nominal figures reported by Better Homes & Gardens Australia on June 23, 2020, not a current cost guide. The useful lesson for anyone planning a similar kitchen is the order of decisions: define the period-home constraints, choose the dominant elements first, then coordinate painting, flooring, cabinetry and lighting around them.

The renovation’s starting point: a period house that needed modern function

Glade-Wright, an interior stylist and founder of Hunting for George, and her partner were renovating their own 1940 Edwardian home. Its pressed-metal ceilings and stained-glass windows supplied the character they wanted to retain. The kitchen, however, needed to work better as a modern room: it required more practical storage, reliable appliances and a cleaner working layout.

The project was more substantial than the couple’s earlier cosmetic renovations. They lived through the disruption, including exposed work areas, sawdust and periods when normal kitchen use was impossible. Glade-Wright later described being able to use the completed room without stepping over a hole or wiping sawdust from the bench as her favourite part of the result.

  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

That outcome matters because the brief was not simply “make it look new.” It combined four competing aims:

  • Modernise the kitchen’s equipment and working performance.
  • Add storage, including a purpose-built pantry solution.
  • Keep a monochromatic, uncluttered appearance.
  • Respect the proportions and surviving details of an older house.

Rather than introducing the same colour and texture found elsewhere in the home, the couple deliberately made the kitchen quieter. The restrained backdrop allowed the architecture and selected appliances to carry the visual interest.

Why the appliances and cabinetry came first

Glade-Wright’s stated method was to choose the appliances and cabinetry before deciding on the remaining finishes. She and her partner wanted a dark scheme, so they selected dark stainless-steel appliances and cabinetry first, then based the other choices on those fixed elements.

This is a practical sequencing decision, not just a style preference. Large appliances determine clearances, sightlines, ventilation requirements and the amount of cabinetry available. Their colour and finish also influence the apparent tone of nearby paint, floors, hardware and lighting. Selecting them late can force expensive revisions or leave a room with mismatched undertones.

The reported renovation process, in order

The published interview describes a sequence that moved from demolition and building repair to finishes, installation and styling. Reproducing the order helps explain where painting work fits into a kitchen rebuild.

  1. Complete clean-out. The room was emptied so the existing cabinetry and finishes could be removed safely and the condition of the walls, ceiling and floor assessed.
  2. Gutting the existing cabinetry. Removing the old units exposed the actual wall lines and floor levels. In an older house, those conditions can differ substantially from what a plan or straightedge suggests.
  3. Ceiling spraying and wall painting. The ceiling was sprayed and the walls painted as part of the visual reset. Doing this before new cabinetry and appliances arrive avoids cutting in around finished joinery and reduces the risk of overspray or splatter on new surfaces.
  4. Repairing exposed brick. Demolition revealed brick with holes, glue and concrete showing. Those areas were repaired before the room was finished, addressing the substrate rather than trying to conceal defects with colour alone.
  5. Sanding and whitewashing the floors. The existing floor was prepared and given a lighter whitewashed treatment, which supported the monochromatic palette while preserving visible floor character.
  6. Installing cabinetry and appliances. Once the room surfaces were ready, the new units and selected appliances were fitted. Their installation had to accommodate the house’s irregular geometry.
  7. Building custom pantry shelving. A dedicated storage solution increased capacity without relying on a visually busy collection of freestanding organisers.
  8. Keeping styling minimal. The completed room was intentionally left uncluttered so the dark joinery, appliances and period architecture remained legible.

What the painting work contributed

Although the story is a kitchen case study, its most transferable lessons for a painting project concern preparation and sequencing. The painted surfaces were not treated as a cosmetic afterthought: the ceiling, walls, exposed brick and floor all required different preparation methods.

Ceiling preparation and spraying

Spraying can produce a consistent finish on a ceiling, but it requires careful masking of windows, stained glass, electrical points, joinery and any retained pressed-metal detail. In a period room, the painter must identify which elements are to be coated and which must remain untouched before equipment is brought in. Ventilation, containment and drying time also need to be planned around the rest of the renovation.

The reported project sprayed the ceiling before the cabinetry and appliances were installed. That order is sensible because it keeps the largest source of airborne coating away from finished equipment. It also leaves room for the painter to reach edges and corners without working around tall cabinets.

Walls over repaired masonry

Exposed brick in the room showed holes, glue and concrete after demolition. Painting directly over that mix would have telegraphed the defects through the finish. A durable result requires the loose material to be removed, voids and uneven patches repaired, and the surface allowed to dry before primer and topcoat are applied.

Repairs should be judged by the final light in the room. Dark appliances and a minimal palette can make side-lighting more noticeable, so ridges, filled holes and trowel marks that seemed minor during demolition may become prominent once the walls are evenly painted.

Floors and the whitewashed effect

The floors were sanded and whitewashed. Sanding removes the existing surface treatment and levels small variations; whitewashing then changes the tone while retaining some visual reading of the floor beneath. The approach supported the couple’s pale-and-dark contrast without introducing a third strong colour.

Floor coatings need adequate cure time before heavy appliances are rolled into position. A painter or flooring contractor should also agree in advance where the floor finish stops, how it meets cabinetry plinths and whether later repairs will be possible without creating a visible patch.

Protecting period details

Pressed-metal ceilings and stained-glass windows are vulnerable to accidental damage from ladders, spray mist, sanding dust and adhesive. Masking must be robust enough for the entire sequence, not just for a single coat. Removing protection too early can expose finished surfaces while flooring, cabinetry or appliance installation is still under way.

The biggest challenge: an old house is rarely square

Glade-Wright identified the project’s main difficulty as fitting modern components into an older building. Her exact observation was: “No wall or floor is rarely perfectly straight, which always makes it difficult when it comes to renovating.”

That condition affects every trade. Cabinet runs designed on a perfectly straight line may meet a bowed wall; a floor that falls across the room can change appliance heights; and a corner that looks square may open or close as it rises. The practical consequences include visible filler lines, doors that need scribing, uneven reveals and appliances that require careful levelling.

Checks to make before ordering

  • Measure each wall at several heights rather than recording one width.
  • Check floor levels along the full appliance and cabinet run.
  • Locate plumbing, electrical outlets, gas or electrical supply points and ventilation paths before finalising cabinetry.
  • Photograph concealed conditions after demolition so repairs and future servicing are easier to understand.
  • Confirm which period features are staying and protect them in the construction drawings and site plan.

Allowing for adjustment is not wasted space in a period kitchen. It is the margin that lets modern cabinetry meet an imperfect building without forcing every discrepancy into a last-minute on-site decision.

What the renovation reportedly cost

The article framed the project as a $20,000 kitchen renovation, but its itemised figures total $21,626, a difference of $1,626. The source’s extracted text does not state the currency explicitly. Because the story is Australian, readers may encounter the figures presented in an Australian context, but they should not be silently converted or treated as a current quotation.

Item Reported amount What the figure represents
Cabinetry $7,460 Published 2020 project figure
Oven/cooker $6,299 90 cm electric freestanding cooker line
Dishwasher $1,999 Built-under dishwasher line
Fridge $3,049 524 L French-door refrigerator line
Paint $438 Published 2020 project figure
Floors $294 Sanding and whitewashing allowance as reported
Plantation shutters $513 Published 2020 project figure
Tap $110 Published 2020 project figure
Sink $434 Published 2020 project figure
Lights $780 Published 2020 project figure
Pantry storage $250 Custom pantry shelving allowance
Itemised total $21,626 Exceeds the $20,000 framing by $1,626

Cabinetry and the three major appliances account for most of the listed spending. Paint and floors are comparatively small line items in this particular project, but that does not make preparation optional: poor substrate work can undermine the appearance of every more expensive element installed around it.

The trade-offs behind the finished look

Period character versus modern performance

Keeping the Edwardian details while installing contemporary appliances required the new work to sit within an existing visual language. The solution was not to imitate every historical detail. Instead, the couple retained the distinctive ceilings and windows and used a disciplined modern palette around them.

Appliances first versus finish flexibility

Choosing the dark appliances and cabinetry first narrowed later choices, but it also created coherence. Paint, floors, lighting and hardware could be judged against real samples and dimensions rather than an abstract mood board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom storage versus visual restraint

The pantry shelving added capacity without turning the room into a display of containers and accessories. Minimal styling was therefore functional as well as aesthetic: fewer visible objects make the storage system easier to use and the room easier to clean.

How to apply the lessons to your own kitchen

  1. Write the non-negotiables. List period features to retain, appliances that must fit, storage problems to solve and any structural limitations.
  2. Survey the existing room. Record wall deviations, floor falls, window and door positions, service points and the condition of masonry before ordering anything.
  3. Choose the visual anchors. Fix the appliance finish and cabinetry direction first, then test paint, floor and lighting samples beside them.
  4. Schedule dirty work first. Demolition, masonry repair, sanding and ceiling spraying should precede finished cabinetry and appliance installation.
  5. Set protection standards. Specify how pressed metal, stained glass, floors and newly painted surfaces will be masked and when protection may be removed.
  6. Keep a contingency. The published project’s $1,626 gap between its headline budget and itemised total illustrates why a rounded headline figure is not the same as a final account.
  7. Plan the lived disruption. Decide where meals will be prepared, how dust will be contained and how long the household can function without the room.

What this before-and-after actually proves

This renovation demonstrates a clear design and project-management principle: a period kitchen can become markedly more practical without erasing the features that make the house distinctive. The result depended less on adding decoration than on making a few coordinated decisions—dark appliances and cabinetry, carefully prepared painted surfaces, lighter floors, custom pantry storage and deliberately sparse styling.

It also shows why old-house renovations cannot be priced or installed as if every room were a new, square shell. Uneven walls and floors affect cabinetry, painting and appliance fitting simultaneously. A realistic plan treats surface preparation and adjustment time as core work, not as an afterthought.

For current projects, the published prices should be replaced with fresh local quotations and confirmed product availability. The enduring value of the case study is the sequence: preserve what is irreplaceable, solve the practical constraints first, and let the paint and finishes support the architecture rather than compete with it.
