BA Collective transformed a 10,674-square-foot tenant interior at Spaceport America in New Mexico into a staged preparation journey for Virgin Galactic astronauts. The design leads civilians from weathering-steel doors through a reflective bridge and hangar reveal, into a daylight-filled teaching lounge, and finally to quiet private suites. Each change in scale, light, sound and enclosure corresponds to a different part of the four-day introduction and training program.

How BA Collective turned training into a spatial sequence
The facility is organized less like a conventional office or classroom suite than like a procession. BA Collective describes a four-day program that combines safety protocol, active travel assignments, self-discovery and connection with the wider experiential journey. The interior gives those activities a sequence that moves between exposure and retreat, collective instruction and personal preparation.
1. A compressed threshold creates a change of state
Visitors enter through weathering-steel doors, a material cue that acknowledges Spaceport America’s rugged desert setting. Beyond the doors, the first vestibule is deliberately minimal. The reduction in visual information makes the next element—the long reflective bridge—read as an event rather than an ordinary corridor.
2. The reflective bridge makes arrival feel like a procession
Floor-to-ceiling light strips and reflective surfaces line the bridge. Their repeated vertical rhythm and mirrored views produce an apparent dissolving or infinite effect. This is not presented as a measured psychological intervention; it is a design device that slows the approach and builds anticipation.

Speakers bring the sounds of that working environment into the passage, so the journey is experienced through sight and sound as well as movement. The bridge therefore performs two jobs: it carries people to the training rooms and frames the operational world they are preparing to enter.
3. The lounge opens the experience to landscape and community
The bridge gives way to a bright communal lounge with natural light and views across the New Mexico landscape. Three sculptural pods anchor the room. They are not simply decorative objects: each combines a degree of enclosure with seating, a stage-like presentation area and an instructional setting.

Layered translucent curtains can screen two of the pods. Open, the pods support a shared room for gathering and teaching. Screened, they provide visual separation for smaller sessions without turning the lounge into a collection of sealed classrooms. Classrooms and private suites sit around the perimeter, allowing the central room to remain the social and orienting heart of the facility.
4. Private suites supply a deliberate counterpoint
At the quieter end of the sequence, each individual suite begins with a dim vestibule displaying the occupant’s personalized spacesuit. The threshold changes from the lounge’s daylight and activity to a more intimate setting.

Inside, a custom daybed, side tables and storage support several kinds of use: reading, writing, resting and contacting family. The suites are not described as hotel rooms or as performance laboratories. They are private preparation spaces that acknowledge the emotional and practical work of getting ready for an unusual journey.
What is inside Virgin Galactic’s astronaut training facility?
A visitor’s route encounters the following components:
- Weathering-steel entry doors: the first threshold and a visual reference to the desert site.
- Minimal vestibule: a restrained arrival zone before the main procession.
- Reflective bridge: a long passage with full-height light strips, reflective finishes, hangar views and hangar sound.
- Daylit communal lounge: the central gathering and orientation space, connected to the New Mexico landscape.
- Three sculptural pods: enclosed-enough settings for instruction, presentations and group interaction.
- Translucent curtains: flexible screening for two pods when smaller or more private sessions are needed.
- Perimeter classrooms: dedicated teaching rooms around the lounge.
- Individual suites: personalized spacesuit displays, custom daybeds, side tables, storage and room for personal communication.
This arrangement lets the same program alternate between group attention and individual reflection without requiring a separate building for each mode.

The material palette: a polished interior against a rugged exterior
Spaceport America’s exterior is described through Cor-Ten steel and glass. Inside, BA Collective and Architectural Record describe a markedly different vocabulary: stainless-steel panels, high-gloss surfaces, polished concrete, LED strips, curved white sculptural forms, translucent veils and custom woven upholstery.

Reflective and seamless surfaces
The stainless steel and high-gloss finishes reinforce the bridge’s visual ambiguity. They catch light, multiply edges and make the limits of the passage less obvious. Architectural Record characterizes the material intent as sleek and seamless. That is an account of the design language, not evidence that the finishes produce a particular training or emotional result.
Curves, veils and upholstery soften the technology
Curved white forms give the lounge pods a sculptural identity while preserving their practical roles as seating and teaching elements. Translucent curtains introduce a soft boundary rather than a solid wall. Custom woven upholstery adds tactile variation to an otherwise hard palette of metal, glass-like gloss and concrete.
The contrast is intentional: the facility does not reproduce the roughness of the surrounding desert indoors. Instead, it stages a controlled, luminous environment that can shift from expansive to intimate as the program requires.
A program translated into spatial choices
| Training or arrival need | Spatial response | Experience described by the project sources |
|---|---|---|
| Recognize the operational setting | Bridge windows and speakers connected to the hangar | The hangar is revealed visually and aurally during the approach |
| Build anticipation before instruction | Minimal vestibule followed by a long reflective bridge | A procession with an apparent dissolving or infinite effect |
| Teach and gather as a group | Daylit lounge with three sculptural pods | Pods combine enclosure, stage, seating and instructional functions |
| Adapt the room to different group sizes | Layered translucent curtains around two pods | Open or screened configurations within one communal area |
| Provide personal preparation time | Perimeter suites with dim vestibules and personalized spacesuits | A quieter counterpoint to the active lounge |
| Read, write or contact family | Custom daybed, side tables and storage in each suite | Private room for practical and reflective tasks |
Community and solitude are designed as a rhythm
Hagy Belzberg, quoted by Architectural Record, says: “The design plays with moments of community and individuality, expansiveness and intimacy, excitement and quiet, which parallels the rhythm of the training experience.” That sentence explains the project’s organizing idea more accurately than a claim that the interior guarantees a particular outcome.

The lounge and bridge make the visitor visible to others and connect the program to the hangar and landscape. The screened pods and suites then allow attention to narrow. The alternation is especially relevant to a civilian program: participants must learn shared procedures, absorb unfamiliar information, manage their own preparation and remain connected to people outside the facility.
Former Virgin Galactic design director Jeremy Brown describes the result as one that “elevates the impact of the journey ahead.” The statement is an attributed design assessment. The published sources do not report a performance study, measured training improvement or post-occupancy evaluation, so the facility’s effects should be understood as design intent and editorial interpretation rather than quantified results.

BA Collective identifies partners Hagy Belzberg, Cory Taylor and Jennifer Wu, with Kristofer Leese, Elizabeth Pyatt and Amanda Schwarz listed on the project team. RMKM is identified as the New Mexico architect of record.
Architectural Record supplies a broader roster and credits engineering firms, Progressive Construction Management, Spectrum Oak and Flintco as general contractor. Because the two publications present different levels of credit detail, it is more accurate to identify each source’s role list than to treat either as a single exhaustive roster.

Why the facility matters as an interior-design case study
The project demonstrates how an interior can explain a program without relying on signage alone. The bridge communicates transition through sequence, reflection, light, sound and a controlled view into the hangar. The lounge communicates collective learning through daylight, flexible pods and a landscape connection. The suites communicate personal preparation through reduced light, individualized equipment displays and domestic-scale furniture.
Its strongest lesson is not that futuristic materials automatically create a futuristic experience. Rather, each material and spatial move is tied to a change in activity. Reflective surfaces belong to the anticipatory bridge; translucent curtains belong to flexible group teaching; woven upholstery and daybeds belong to personal retreat. The facility’s coherence comes from matching atmosphere to program.
That distinction is important when evaluating the work. The sources establish the building’s dimensions, date, spaces, materials and stated intentions. They do not establish that the design improved safety compliance, accelerated learning or changed astronaut outcomes. What can be assessed is the clarity of the choreography: the project gives a four-day preparation program a legible physical arc from arrival, to orientation, to instruction, to solitude.

Spaceport America is cited by BA Collective as a 110,000-square-foot complex in the New Mexico desert. Within that larger setting, the 10,674-square-foot tenant improvement is compact enough for a carefully controlled sequence but substantial enough to contain a lounge, pods, classrooms and private suites.
The interior’s polished palette should therefore be read in relation to its location, not in isolation. The weathering-steel entry and hangar views acknowledge the infrastructure outside. Stainless steel, gloss, LEDs, white curves and veils create an interior counterpoint rather than a literal continuation of the desert. The result is a place where the physical environment keeps reminding participants that the program is connected to a working spaceport, even when the immediate room becomes quiet and personal.
Bottom line
BA Collective’s Virgin Galactic Astronaut Training Facility is an interior organized as a journey. A reflective bridge and carefully framed hangar reveal build anticipation; a bright lounge and adaptable pods support communal teaching; and dim, personalized suites provide room for individual preparation. Completed in 2023 at Spaceport America, the 10,674-square-foot project turns the choreography of a four-day astronaut introduction into architecture without claiming that atmosphere alone can measure training success.
