Barlow Street House is a Brisbane townhouse transformed by opening its two-storey cellular plan, moving the kitchen and using full-height glazing to reconnect the interior with the garden. A hardwood screen and balcony give the street frontage privacy and a new identity, while a restrained monochrome scheme—pale timber, soft grey and carefully chosen furnishings—keeps the home calm without making it impersonal.

Tongue & Groove describes Barlow Street House as the transformation of a dated Tuscan-style townhouse for a growing family. Rather than treating the work as a surface makeover, the project changes how the two-storey home is organised and how it meets its site. The former cellular arrangement was opened up, and relocating the kitchen established a more dynamic relationship between rooms and the exterior.

That sequence matters. In a narrow or compartmentalised townhouse, adding a lighter paint colour does not by itself make the plan feel generous. The stronger move is to remove visual and physical barriers where they are not useful, then place the rooms that matter most to daily life—especially the kitchen—where they can participate in the wider sequence from inside to outside.
The result is a house with a deliberately quiet background. Its architecture supplies openness, daylight and privacy; art, furniture and family possessions provide the variable layer of colour and texture.

How opening the plan changes the experience
Replacing a cellular sequence with visual continuity
A cellular plan divides movement into a series of enclosed rooms. The project account says the townhouse was opened up, which allows sightlines and daylight to travel farther through the two-storey interior. The change is spatial as much as visual: rooms can still have distinct uses, but they no longer read as isolated compartments.

For a family home, this arrangement can make shared activity easier to follow. Someone preparing food can remain connected to the living areas; movement toward the garden becomes part of the same visual sequence rather than a transition through several doors. The available description does not provide a measured floor area or a plan drawing, so the precise extent of demolition and the dimensions of each room are not established. What is clear is the design intention: fewer internal barriers and a stronger relationship between the principal living spaces.
Why the kitchen relocation is pivotal
Moving the kitchen is the project’s most consequential planning decision. Kitchens often act as the operational centre of a home, so their position determines who sees the garden, where family members gather and how circulation works around them. Tongue & Groove links the relocation to a more dynamic inside–outside relationship, suggesting that the kitchen now participates in the movement toward the exterior instead of sitting apart from it.

This is a useful lesson for townhouse renovations. Before choosing finishes, identify the room that governs daily movement and test whether it is facing the best source of light, the garden or the social spaces. A new benchtop or cabinet colour can refresh a kitchen; moving it can alter the logic of the entire house.
Full-height glazing makes the garden part of the interior
Doors at both ends, not a single borrowed view
Floor-to-ceiling glazed doors at the front and rear are described as the clearest connection to the garden and a source of abundant natural light. Using glazing at both ends creates a longer visual axis than a single window can provide. The garden is not confined to one outlook; it appears at multiple points in the home’s circulation.
Full-height openings also change the proportion of the rooms. A conventional window frames a view within a wall. A glazed door removes much of that visual weight, allowing the boundary between interior and garden to read as a thin line when the doors are open. The project description does not quantify daylight levels, solar control or thermal performance, so those outcomes should not be treated as measured results. The established effect is experiential: stronger visual access to planting and more natural light entering the house.
Connection without surrendering the street
Opening the rear of a townhouse to the garden is comparatively straightforward; opening the front can expose occupants to the street. Barlow Street House addresses that tension with a hardwood timber screen and balcony wrapping the street-facing frontage. The screen creates visual privacy while giving the entrance a defined edge, and the balcony becomes part of the facade rather than an exposed appendage.
This is a two-sided strategy. Glazing supplies openness and daylight, while the screen filters views from outside. The architecture therefore avoids choosing between a dark, defensive front and an entirely transparent one. It allows light through the frontage while controlling direct sightlines.

The timber screen establishes a modern street identity
Tongue & Groove’s account frames the hardwood screen as part of the home’s new modern identity. Its material presence gives the facade depth and rhythm, replacing the visual language associated with the former Tuscan-style townhouse with a more restrained expression.
The screen also performs several jobs at once:
- Privacy: it limits direct views toward the glazed frontage.
- Threshold: it marks the entrance and gives arrival a sense of definition.
- Material continuity: its timber relates to the oak floor inside.
- Facade relief: it adds a layer in front of the glazing and balcony instead of leaving a flat glass-and-render elevation.
The source does not state the screen’s species, spacing, coating or maintenance regime, so those technical characteristics cannot be inferred from the project description. Its documented role is architectural and visual: privacy, entry definition and a shared material language.
A monochrome interior made warmer by timber
Quiet does not have to mean colourless
The interior is described as a striking monochrome palette. In this house, monochrome is not presented as an absence of material variation. Limed blonde timber tones and hints of soft grey introduce warmth and depth, preventing white, black or grey surfaces from becoming a flat graphic exercise.
Timber is especially important because it softens the discipline of the palette. The oak floor gives the larger planes of the interior a continuous, tactile base, while the pale tones keep the rooms visually light. Soft grey adds another value between the timber and the stronger monochrome elements, creating gradation rather than a series of hard contrasts.
Art and furnishings supply the changeable layer
The clients’ artwork and furnishings bring colour and texture against the minimal background. This division between fixed and changeable elements is one of the project’s most useful ideas. Walls, floors and major architectural surfaces can remain restrained for years, while furniture, textiles and art can evolve with the family.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
A quiet envelope also gives individual pieces more presence. A coloured artwork is not competing with a busy tile pattern; a textured chair or rug can become a deliberate focal point. The approach accommodates personal expression without requiring every permanent finish to carry the visual load.
The flooring specification named for Barlow Street House
Tongue & Groove identifies the floorboards as its solid engineered European oak in the Bistre colourway. The project page lists four relevant descriptors: Piccolo format, Classic grade and a textured style, in addition to the European oak construction.
| Flooring descriptor | Named project detail |
|---|---|
| Material | European oak |
| Construction wording | Solid engineered |
| Colourway | Bistre |
| Format | Piccolo |
| Grade | Classic |
| Surface style | Textured |
The floor is not an isolated finish choice. The project narrative explicitly links the oak floor and hardwood screen through their shared materiality. That relationship helps the house read as a coordinated composition: timber appears at the street, at the threshold and underfoot inside, while the restrained colour range prevents those elements from becoming visually unrelated.
Exact board dimensions, finish chemistry, timber provenance, life-cycle performance and maintenance requirements are not stated in the available project account. Anyone specifying a similar floor would need the manufacturer’s current technical documentation for those decisions; the project description establishes the named product characteristics, not a complete installation specification.

Practical lessons for a townhouse renovation
Start with movement, not finishes
Map the routes used every day: entry, kitchen, living areas, stairs and garden. If the plan forces repeated detours or hides the outside from the rooms where people spend time, a planning change may deliver more than a decorative update. Barlow Street House’s opened-up plan and relocated kitchen demonstrate that principle.
Use glazing strategically
Large glazed doors can create a powerful connection, but their value depends on where they are placed. At Barlow Street House, glazing is paired with a screen on the street frontage, showing that openness and privacy can be designed together. The project does not publish solar, acoustic or energy data, so those issues would need separate assessment on another site.
Give privacy a material expression
A screen can do more than block views. By wrapping the frontage and relating to the interior floor, the hardwood element becomes part of the architectural identity. When planning a screen, consider how it will define the entry, appear from inside and connect to other materials rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Keep the fixed palette disciplined
A restrained base makes future changes easier. Pale timber, soft grey and monochrome surfaces can support different artworks, furniture and textiles over time. The Barlow Street House approach reserves strong colour and texture for elements the occupants can change, while the architecture remains coherent.
What is—and is not—documented about the project
The available project account establishes the Brisbane location, the design and construction credits, the principal planning and facade moves, the named flooring specification and the interior palette. It does not report a completion date, budget, floor area, quantified energy or daylight performance, environmental rating, technical flooring test data or direct quotations from the architect, builder or clients.
Architecture & Design lists the project under the title “Barlow Street House reimagined with a streamlined design and restrained palette” with a publication date of 14 November 2022. The article content itself is not available in the material used here, so that listing supplies bibliographic context only. Alexandra Buchanan Architecture’s current practice website identifies the studio as founded in 2011 and based in Brisbane and Melbourne; an owner testimonial there refers to a “Barlow House” in Clayfield, but the available page does not establish that it is the same project and it is therefore not treated as a quotation about Barlow Street House.
The project’s central idea
Barlow Street House is a study in controlled openness. The plan is opened, but the street is screened. Glazing brings the garden and daylight into the house, while the timber frontage protects privacy. The palette is restrained, but art and furnishings keep the rooms personal. Pale oak and soft grey prevent the monochrome scheme from becoming stark, and the shared timber language ties the facade to the floor.
