DROO’s Crescent House Demonstration Kitchen in East Dulwich, London, is a 2022 extension designed to do two jobs without allowing either to take over: it is a working family kitchen and the set for vegan cook Catharina Choi’s culinary YouTube channel. The solution combines an approximately L-shaped addition, a curved glazed garden wall, camera-facing cabinetry, concealed equipment storage and a cooktop with downdraft ventilation. Reported project details come from Chris Foges’s feature in Architectural Record, published February 13, 2024.

A kitchen designed for domestic life and filming

When Catharina Choi moved from Brazil to London with her husband in late 2020, she bought a 1,680-square-foot house in East Dulwich and planned a renovation around an unusual brief. The kitchen had to support ordinary family routines while also functioning as a studio for her cooking videos. That meant the room needed practical preparation space, storage and links to the rest of the house, but it also had to provide a controlled visual background and clear sightlines for cameras.

The brief created a problem common to many creator-led interiors: equipment and work surfaces are useful during production but can make a room look cluttered when filming stops. Choi also wanted the new space to avoid consuming too much of the garden. DROO answered with an extension whose shape, joinery and services are arranged as deliberately as a set. DROO cofounder Amrita Mahindroo described the approach this way: “That influenced everything, from display to how you move through the room,” says DROO cofounder Amrita Mahindroo. “We approached it almost as a piece of theater.”

That theatrical quality is not a decorative theme pasted onto a normal kitchen. It comes from treating the camera’s view, movement through the room and the concealment of working equipment as fundamental design constraints.

Project Crescent House Demonstration Kitchen
Location East Dulwich, London
Architect DROO Architects; principals Michel da Costa Gonçalves and Amrita Mahindroo
Client Catharina Choi
Completion 2022
Existing house area 1,680 square feet
Extension area Approximately 230 square feet in the article narrative; 232 square feet in the project credits
Pantry area 66 square feet
Canopy projection 20 inches beyond the glazing
Cost Withheld in the source

These figures are project descriptions reported by Architectural Record, not independent measurements or performance statistics. The two extension figures should be retained as published rather than treated as a corrected single value.

Why the extension is L-shaped

The rear addition is approximately L-shaped. On one side it reaches farther into the plot, occupying the area where a shed had stood; on the other, it pulls back. This asymmetry lets the kitchen gain usable floor area while preserving more of the garden than a uniformly deep extension would have done.

The garden-facing wall is glazed and angled around a curved central pane. Instead of presenting a flat rectangle to the garden, the facade bends the view and helps form a reading nook inside. A white metal canopy projects 20 inches past the glazing to shed rain. The canopy is a small but consequential piece of the composition: it protects the edge of the glass while establishing a crisp horizontal line above the garden elevation.

For a filming space, the geometry has another consequence. The angled glazing and curved center create changing reflections and viewpoints as people move, while the long internal wall supplies a more controlled, repeatable background. The room therefore has a bright, outward-looking side for family use and a composed working elevation for recording.

Keeping the garden in the plan

Choi’s request was not simply for more floor area. She wanted a useful kitchen without surrendering too much outdoor space. The extension’s pulled-back side and its use of the former shed location show how the footprint responds to that trade-off. The source does not publish a before-and-after garden measurement, so the amount retained cannot be quantified; what is established is the design intention to balance interior workspace with the plot.

Joinery that serves as a set

Custom oak-veneered plywood cabinets and open shelves run along the longest wall. They are functional storage, but they also form the principal background for Choi’s videos. Because the joinery is continuous, the camera can see a deliberate field of timber, shelves and selected objects rather than a collection of unrelated appliances.

The run extends toward the reading nook created by the curved facade. At the opposite end, the joinery continues into a passage leading to the dining room. This continuation makes the kitchen part of a larger circulation sequence instead of an isolated production box. It also means that the background remains coherent as a person moves between kitchen, nook and dining area.

Handle-free doors without accidental openings

Choi wanted push-operated, handle-free cabinets, but she was concerned that visitors leaning against them could open drawers or doors unintentionally. DROO recessed the doors and drawers into the cabinet boxes, leaving the cabinet edges exposed as a subtle architectural detail. Where a handle was useful, it was incorporated into additional ribs that align with the framing.

This is a precise response to a practical conflict. Completely flush fronts support a calm camera image, while the recessed edges and aligned ribs provide places to operate the cabinetry without adding a scatter of conventional hardware. The source does not report a user test or long-term failure rate, so the value of the detail is best understood as a design response to the client’s stated concern, not as a proven performance claim.

Separating camera-facing storage from production equipment

The former kitchen and laundry were reorganized to create a 66-square-foot pantry. Equipment considered less suitable for the camera can be stored there, keeping the principal elevation visually controlled. This gives the room two storage characters: open shelves and cabinetry that can participate in the shot, and a dedicated back-of-house zone for items that need to be close at hand but not visible.

For a creator, that distinction can reduce the amount of resetting required between filming and ordinary use. For a household, it prevents the entire kitchen from having to look like a studio all day. The pantry’s reported area is specific, but the article does not list its shelving, appliances or capacity; those details should not be inferred.

The island puts the cooking action in view

A large island organizes cabinetry around a cooktop that faces the camera. The orientation makes the cooking surface the visible center of demonstrations instead of placing it on a side wall or turning the presenter away from the lens.

The cooktop uses downdraft ventilation. By drawing cooking exhaust down rather than requiring an overhead hood, the system avoids placing a hood in the camera’s view. The article identifies the ventilation type but does not name a manufacturer or model, provide extraction figures or report an independent test. A downdraft system is therefore a documented project choice, not a performance recommendation for every kitchen.

The island’s arrangement also allows the camera-facing action to sit within the broader family room. The project is described as more professional than a typical domestic kitchen because of its content-production requirements, yet it remains connected to the garden and the rest of the house. That combination is central to the design: the work surface is a set when recording and a shared household surface when it is not.

Materials, color and daylight

The reported palette is restrained but not neutral in the bland sense. White quartz counters provide a light work surface; a pink tile backsplash introduces color behind the preparation area; polished concrete flooring gives the room a continuous, hard-wearing base; and oak-veneered plywood adds warmth to the long storage wall. Brushed brass faucets serve twin sinks, supplying a metallic accent without competing with the joinery.

Circular skylights bring overhead daylight into the extension. Gauzy drapes soften the glazed garden elevation, while the curved central pane and angled wall modulate the view outward. Together, these details create several kinds of light within one room: top light from the skylights, garden light through the glazing and a softer filtered layer at the drapes.

For video, a varied but disciplined palette can help establish depth in a fixed frame. The source does not publish lighting measurements, color-rendering tests or footage comparisons, so it is not possible to claim that the materials produce a particular camera result. What can be said is that DROO selected surfaces and openings that make the room legible from both the lens and the garden.

How the room supports a filming routine

The plan suggests a sequence rather than a single all-purpose zone. The pantry provides a place for equipment outside the principal view. The long joinery wall establishes the visual background. The island brings the cooktop and preparation activity toward the camera. The garden-facing glazing and reading nook create a second orientation for family life.

  • Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
  • The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
  • The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

That sequence matters because filming imposes demands beyond cooking. A presenter needs to move, ingredients and tools need to be reachable, and the frame needs to remain understandable when the action shifts. By extending the joinery toward the dining passage, DROO also avoids making the studio feel like a dead-end room. The article does not specify camera positions, crew size, recording schedule or acoustic treatment, so those operational details remain unknown.

Design lessons for a dual-use kitchen

Crescent House offers a useful framework for anyone planning a kitchen that must work on camera as well as in daily life. These are design principles drawn from the documented arrangement, not claims that the project was tested against a formal standard.

1. Start with the primary sightline

Decide what the camera should see first. Here, the longest wall of oak-veneered plywood cabinets and open shelves is the principal background, while the island places the cooktop toward that view. A background should be designed as part of the architecture, not assembled from leftover storage after the plan is fixed.

2. Give visible and invisible storage different jobs

Open shelves and the main cabinet run can carry the objects that belong in the frame. A separate pantry can hold equipment that is useful but visually distracting. The 66-square-foot pantry demonstrates the value of a dedicated concealed zone, although the right size for another household depends on its equipment and routines.

3. Resolve ventilation before the ceiling is crowded

An overhead hood can become a dominant object in a cooking shot. Crescent House uses downdraft ventilation to keep the view above the cooktop clear. Anyone considering the same strategy would need to verify local requirements, appliance compatibility and the system’s actual extraction performance; none of those specifications are supplied for this project.

4. Treat hardware as part of the visual language

Push-operated fronts, recessed doors and drawers, and aligned ribs let the cabinetry read as a continuous composition. The detailing also responds to the client’s concern about accidental opening when visitors lean on the cabinets. The lesson is not that one hardware type is universally best, but that operation and appearance should be solved together.

5. Protect the ordinary day

A studio kitchen still has to function when no camera is running. The connection to the garden, the reading nook and the route to the dining room keep the extension tied to family life. A dual-use plan should provide places to work, gather and store equipment without requiring the household to maintain a permanent set.

6. Use daylight strategically, not just generously

The curved glazed wall, circular skylights and gauzy drapes create multiple daylight conditions. More glass is not automatically better for filming, because glare and changing exposure can complicate a shot. The project shows a more nuanced approach: generous garden connection moderated by canopy, curvature and fabric.

Team, consultants and credited suppliers

Architectural Record credits DROO Architects, with Michel da Costa Gonçalves and Amrita Mahindroo identified as principals and Harikleia Karamali and Clara Saade on the team. The engineer was AKSESS. Cavendish Surveying handled party-wall work; SWECO is credited for CDM; Assent for building control; and Elite Renewables for the air-source heat pump. Tetra Building Ltd. is identified as the general contractor.

Supplier credits include Maxlight for glazing, Szubert Carpentry Services for cabinetwork and custom woodwork, Havwoods for timber flooring, and Miccoli and London Worktops Direct for stone. These are project credits reported in the article, not endorsements, evidence of current availability or indications of affiliate relationships.

What the published record does and does not establish

The project was completed in 2022, and the source provides a detailed account of its brief, plan, materials and credited team. It does not disclose the construction cost. It also does not provide measured video performance, acoustic data, ventilation testing, energy results, appliance specifications or a post-occupancy assessment.

The extension is described as 230 square feet in the narrative and listed as 232 square feet in the project credits. Both numbers should be read in their original contexts. The existing house is reported as 1,680 square feet, and the pantry as 66 square feet. None of these figures should be generalized to a recommended minimum or treated as a construction tolerance.

Because the account is a secondary project feature, the details above are attributed to Architectural Record. Planning records and the architect’s own project documentation were not independently checked for this article. That qualification does not diminish the design idea; it clarifies which statements are documented descriptions and which are practical interpretations.

Why Crescent House is significant as a kitchen project

Crescent House is not simply a large kitchen with filming equipment added afterward. The camera changes the architecture from the beginning: it influences the background, the position of the island, the treatment of storage, the choice of ventilation and the way the extension meets the garden. At the same time, the room avoids becoming a theatrical shell that works only when a recording light is on.

DROO’s strongest move is the separation of roles without separating the household. The pantry hides the less presentable equipment; the long joinery wall gives the camera a stable visual field; the downdraft cooktop keeps the cooking action open; and the L-shaped extension adds space while responding to the garden. The result is a room conceived as a piece of theater, but one that remains a kitchen first whenever the filming stops.
