Kristi Linauer’s new large floral mural was designed for a specific 16-foot studio wall, not selected from a standard, ready-made mural catalog. She enlarged and revised her own repeating floral artwork, arranged it across 24-inch wallpaper pieces, and planned to trim the printed edges so the pattern would flow through overlapping seams.

Her June 26, 2023 preview captures the project before installation. The mural had arrived and looked brighter and larger than the earlier version, but electricians still needed to move outlets for the revised cabinet and countertop layout. Linauer expected to install it after that work; the post does not confirm that installation was completed. Read Linauer’s original preview.
A project-specific mural, redesigned for scale
Linauer had created the floral pattern herself and had already used an earlier version on the studio wall in 2019. She liked that design overall, but the new mural addressed a problem that became obvious at room distance: some dark purple flowers read as solid blobs instead of recognizable blooms. The revision changed both color and scale so the flowers would retain their shapes when viewed from across the room.

That distinction matters. This was not simply the same wallpaper file printed larger. Linauer adjusted the artwork, changed the repeat arrangement, and planned the mural around the exact width of her wall. Her goal was a composition that remained legible at a much larger size while still behaving like a continuous repeating pattern.
The color problem was visible from across the room
Linauer described the most important visual correction in practical terms: “I love how those dark purple flowers are now light enough and big enough that they’ll still look like flowers (and not purple blobs) even from the other side of the room.” — Kristi Linauer, author, Addicted 2 Decorating, June 26, 2023.
Lightening the purple areas and enlarging the blooms solved two related viewing problems. A darker, smaller motif can lose internal detail at distance; a larger, lighter motif gives the eye more information to read as a flower. The statement is about this mural’s appearance, not a general color rule for every floral wallpaper.

The 2019 design placed one complete pattern repeat on a single 24-inch-wide wallpaper piece. For the new mural, Linauer prepared one repeat across two 24-inch pieces. In nominal terms, that makes one repeat 48 inches wide before any edge trimming. A 16-foot wall is 192 inches wide, so four 48-inch repeat units would equal the wall width mathematically. The actual order still depended on panel edges, overlap, and the usable printed area, so that calculation should not be treated as a confirmed panel count.

Why a repeating design was harder than a normal mural image
A conventional mural can be composed as one wide image and divided into installation panels. Linauer’s artwork worked differently: it was a repeatable pattern that had to be enlarged, tiled, and fitted to a fixed wall width. The printer therefore needed to understand more than the picture itself. The order had to preserve the repeat, position the artwork over multiple 24-inch widths, and produce a result that could be aligned on the wall.
Linauer first looked at Photowall, which had supplied a mural for her bathroom. She says she changed direction after encountering a design-system problem while trying to adapt this particular artwork. She then contacted Murals Your Way, but lost confidence that the desired result was understood. Her account describes those as project decisions, not a controlled test of either company and not a ranking of mural printers.
The turning point came when she found a Spoonflower tutorial explaining how to turn a picture into a mural. Spoonflower had printed her original wallpaper, so the tutorial provided a familiar starting point. Linauer did not follow it mechanically; she adapted the workflow to preserve overlapping seams, which she preferred to butt joints that would require hand trimming and filling.
The criteria she needed a printer to meet
Her choices can be understood through five practical criteria:
- Repeat handling: The service had to work with a repeating pattern rather than treat the artwork as a one-off, single-width image.
- Resizing and tiling: The design needed to be enlarged and distributed across several 24-inch-wide pieces.
- Wall-specific sizing: The finished arrangement had to address a stated 16-foot-wide area.
- Seam strategy: The process needed to support the overlapping seams Linauer preferred.
- Design communication: She needed confidence that the printer understood the intended repeat and final appearance.
The preview does not provide matching specifications, prices, production tolerances, or test results for the three routes she considered. It records how her confidence and design requirements shaped the decision.

How Linauer planned to align the wallpaper panels
The printed pieces did not arrive as perfectly clean rectangles containing only the final artwork. Linauer reported a narrow white strip on one edge, plus extra printed pattern followed by another white strip on the opposite edge. She planned to trim both sides of every piece before installation so the floral artwork would meet correctly from panel to panel.

The approximately 1/4-inch and 3/4-inch figures describe Linauer’s particular print job. They should not be used as a universal allowance for every wallpaper order from the same service or any other printer.
Why she preferred overlapping seams
Linauer favored an overlap because it allowed the pattern to continue across the join without relying on a perfectly matched butt joint. A butt joint places two trimmed edges directly together; if the cut is slightly off or the print shifts, a visible gap can appear and may need filling. Her preferred method kept extra material available at the seam, then used trimming to establish the final alignment.
That choice also explains why the white margins and surplus printed area were not automatically defects from her perspective. They were material she expected to remove while preparing the pieces. The important requirement was that enough correctly positioned artwork remained after trimming to continue the repeat across the wall.
Trimming was part of the planned installation, not a last-minute repair
Because the design was split across two 24-inch pieces per repeat, each edge had to be considered in relation to its neighboring panel. Trimming one piece in isolation could remove the portion needed to match the next one. Linauer’s plan was therefore to treat the paired panels as a repeating unit, align the artwork, and remove the white strips and surplus area that interfered with that alignment.

The preview does not document the tools, blade type, cutting surface, adhesive, or a completed seam. It documents the intended preparation and the reason for it: to make the enlarged pattern read as one continuous mural rather than as independent strips.

Linauer says the mural arrived quickly after she placed the order. Once she saw the printed result, she was pleased with it. The flowers appeared larger and brighter, matching the two visual changes she had wanted when revising the design.
Her satisfaction was an early visual check, not evidence that the mural had already been installed or that every seam had been tested on the wall. The post is a preview of the printed material and the planned installation, so the strongest confirmed result is the appearance of the delivered panels.
Installation was still waiting on electrical work
The studio was being redesigned around a cabinet and countertop plan. Before the mural could go up, electricians needed to move desktop-height outlets so they would suit that revised layout. Linauer intended to install the wallpaper after the electrical work was finished.

Treating the preview as a completed installation would go beyond what she reported.

What this preview says about planning a custom floral mural
Start with the viewing distance, not only the file dimensions
Linauer evaluated the purple flowers from the far side of the room and discovered that their original color and size did not hold up visually. Her revision began with how the artwork would be perceived in the finished space, then worked backward to the print scale. For a large wall, the question is not merely whether an image is high-resolution; it is whether its important shapes remain recognizable at the distance from which people will normally see them.
Define the repeat before asking for a wall-sized layout
The earlier design used one repeat per 24-inch panel, while the new version used two panels for one repeat. That decision affected the mural’s rhythm, the number of joins, and the way the artwork had to be tiled. Establishing the repeat first gave Linauer a clear basis for discussing enlargement and panel placement with a printer.
Discuss seam construction in the design stage
Linauer’s preference for overlapping seams changed how the file needed to be prepared and how the printed edges would be handled. A printer may understand “large mural” differently depending on whether the customer expects butt joints, overlap, or hand-trimmed edges. Her experience shows why seam treatment belongs in the initial specification rather than being left until the panels arrive.

Separate artwork approval from room readiness
The print could look right and still be unable to go on the wall because the room was not ready. Linauer coordinated the mural with outlet relocation, cabinetry, and countertop height. That sequence protected the finished design from being installed before the electrical layout was settled.
The documented status of the mural
As of Linauer’s June 26, 2023 preview, the project had reached the following point:
- The floral artwork had been revised to make the purple flowers lighter and larger.
- The new repeat covered two 24-inch-wide wallpaper pieces.
- The intended coverage was a 16-foot-wide studio area.
- The delivered panels included edge margins and extra printed material that Linauer planned to trim.
- She preferred overlapping seams to butt joints.
- The print had arrived quickly and met her visual expectations.
- Installation was pending electrical outlet changes, and completion was not confirmed.
That combination makes the post useful as a genuine sneak peek: it shows the design decisions and printed result while leaving the final on-wall outcome open. The mural’s most distinctive feature is not simply its floral subject, but the way Linauer adapted a personal repeating pattern to a much larger, precisely sized room.
