Inside Out is a 2015 animated family adventure about Riley, an 11-year-old adjusting to her family’s move from the Midwest to San Francisco. The film makes her inner life visible through five personified emotions—Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness—while treating its imagined mind as a storytelling metaphor, not a scientific map of the brain.
What is Inside Out about?
Riley’s family relocates to San Francisco after her father gets a new job. A new home and school unsettle the routines she knew, and the film follows how she responds to that change.

Inside Riley’s mind, the emotions advise her from Headquarters, an imagined control center. Their efforts to guide her reactions become tangled as Riley tries to adjust. The story’s coming-of-age heart lies in that adjustment: growing up can mean making room for feelings that do not fit a simple happy-or-sad choice.

What do Headquarters and the other mind settings mean?
Pixar’s imagined mind gives abstract experiences visual form. Headquarters is the control center; “core memories” are especially significant memories in the film’s fictional world, and they power Riley’s personality islands.
- Imagination Land turns daydreams and flights of fancy into a full-size spectacle. Director Pete Docter describes it as “where all of Riley’s flights of fancy and daydreams are built full-size and come to life,” adding, “It’s a place where you go to play.” Pixar’s film world page.
- The Train of Thought carries ideas and memories to Headquarters.
- Dream Productions is presented as a Hollywood-style studio producing Riley’s dreams and nightmares.
These are inventions for the movie’s story, not clinical explanations of how the brain or emotions work. The sources describing the film’s premise do not establish it as a validated mental-health model or demonstrate therapeutic effects.

- Disney and Pixar?s ?Inside Out 2? returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is disrupted by something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust aren?t sure how to feel when Anxiety and friends show up.
Who is Bing Bong?
Bing Bong is Riley’s imaginary friend, a fading presence from her early childhood who does not want to be left behind as she grows up. Pixar describes his design as combining an elephant’s trunk, a cat’s tail and a cotton-candy body. His place in the story connects Riley’s change in circumstances with the changes that come with growing older.
