The Porto Alegre plastic-surgery clinic designed by architect Fernanda Salvagni uses custom Corian® counters and lavatories to combine a composed visual language with the practical demands of a clinical setting. The project’s documented strengths are its Glacier White procedure-room counter, a two-tone lavatory palette, and a monolithic custom-fabrication approach. The case study does not, however, identify a specific curved feature, construction date, cost, or measured hygiene result.
Project at a glance
Corian Brasil presents the clinic as a design response to three requirements: comfort, visual quality, and asepsis. Salvagni combined contemporary references with classic elements, then commissioned custom counters and lavatories rather than selecting standard catalog fixtures. AllForm fabricated the Corian® pieces, and Alexandre Alaniz is credited with the project photography.

| Project element | Documented Corian® application | Design intention stated by the case study |
|---|---|---|
| Procedure-room counter | Counter made entirely from Corian® as a custom, integrated piece | Balance light and create a sense of amplitude and serenity in the consultation room |
| Lavatories | Custom Corian® lavatories designed for the clinic | Support the project’s coordinated, monolithic appearance while carrying the selected color palette |
The source describes the material as nonporous and easy to clean. It presents those characteristics as part of the project’s rationale for helping reduce cross-contamination risks, not as proof that the clinic is sterile or that infections were prevented.
Who designed and fabricated the clinic elements?
Fernanda Salvagni is the architect named for the Porto Alegre project. Her brief joined a welcoming atmosphere with the controlled cleanliness expected in a plastic-surgery practice. Instead of treating clinical surfaces as purely technical infrastructure, the project uses them as visible parts of the interior composition.

AllForm fabricated the custom Corian® work. That distinction matters: the case study is about a made-to-measure installation, not a retail countertop or an off-the-shelf sink. Fabrication had to translate the architect’s chosen dimensions, junctions, colors, and integrated forms into pieces that could be installed in the clinic.
The project page credits Alexandre Alaniz for the photograph. No direct quotation from Salvagni is published on that page, so the design intent should be attributed to the case-study description rather than presented as a first-person statement from the architect.
The procedure-room counter uses white as an environmental tool
The procedure-room counter was made entirely from Corian® in Glacier White. The case study links that choice to the consultation room’s visual balance: the surface was intended to moderate the distribution of light and make the room feel more expansive and serene.
That is a broader design move than simply choosing a “clean” color. In a room where patients may already feel apprehensive, a bright, continuous counter can keep the visual field quiet. It avoids introducing a busy pattern at the work surface and allows surrounding architectural details to carry the contrast. The source does not provide illuminance readings or a before-and-after comparison, so the effects should be understood as the architect’s stated visual objective rather than a measured lighting result.

Calling the counter entirely Corian® also signals a deliberate material decision. The case study does not list a separate stone top, laminate edge, or exposed metal transition. Its emphasis is on a single custom surface language, which supports the project’s intended sense of continuity.
Lavatories introduce a controlled two-color composition
The custom lavatories use two Corian® colors: Glacier White and Chic Aubergine, described by the source as a deep aubergine tone. Pairing a light neutral with a saturated, dark accent gives the clinic a way to differentiate elements without abandoning a unified material family.

The lighter tone can keep a washing area visually open, while the aubergine option provides depth and a more intimate focal point. Those are palette readings, not measurements or claims that one color performs better hygienically than another. The case study identifies the colors and the custom lavatory application, but it does not assign each shade to a particular room, basin, or elevation.
Because the lavatories were designed for this project, the palette could be coordinated with dimensions and surrounding finishes from the outset. That is different from adapting a standard basin after the architectural finishes have already been fixed.

What “monolithic” means in this case
Corian Brasil emphasizes the possibility of a monolithic appearance. In architectural interiors, that term generally means that a counter, basin, edge, or upstand reads as one continuous mass rather than a collection of visibly unrelated components. The visual goal is continuity: the eye follows one form across adjoining surfaces.
The Porto Alegre case study supports that design intention, but it does not publish a fabrication drawing, seam map, joint detail, radius schedule, or installation sequence. Readers should therefore avoid assuming that every junction is literally seamless or that the project used a particular thermoforming method. Those decisions would need to be confirmed with the fabricator during technical design.
For an architect, the practical benefit of specifying a monolithic language is coordination. Counter thickness, basin geometry, splash protection, cabinetry interfaces, and access for maintenance can be resolved as one package. The trade-off is that the package requires early dimensional information and a fabricator capable of producing custom work accurately.
The “curved design” wording needs a careful qualification
The assignment title refers to a curved design aesthetic, but the project page captured for this clinic does not explicitly describe a curve. It documents custom design and a monolithic appearance, which can be compatible with curved geometry, but it does not identify a particular curved counter, basin, wall, or transition.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
That distinction is important when the project is used as a specification reference. A reader can accurately say that the clinic demonstrates how custom Corian® work supports a controlled, continuous aesthetic. A reader cannot cite this page alone as evidence that Salvagni installed a named radius or a specific curved feature. Any article, drawing, or tender document that needs that level of precision should rely on project imagery or technical information that identifies the geometry directly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the case study connects the material to cleaning
The source describes Corian® as nonporous and easy to clean, then says those characteristics help reduce the risks of cross-contamination. This is the case study’s stated rationale for using the surface in a plastic-surgery clinic. It is not a quantified clinical outcome, an infection-control study, or a guarantee that contamination cannot occur.

“Nonporous” also should not be treated as a substitute for an operating protocol. A real clinic still needs written cleaning instructions, compatible disinfectants, contact times, staff training, and a maintenance plan for damaged or heavily used areas. The Porto Alegre page names none of those products, procedures, or standards. It says the project prioritized compliance with sanitary norms but does not identify a particular regulation or certification.
For specification teams, the useful takeaway is to connect the material decision to the cleaning workflow without overstating it. Ask how the installed surface will be cleaned between appointments, how joints and penetrations will be accessed, and which products the fabricator and healthcare operator approve. Keep those operational answers separate from the case study’s narrower statement about surface properties.

How to apply the project’s lessons to another clinic
- Define the room-by-room brief. List consultation, procedure, hand-washing, storage, and waiting areas before selecting colors or profiles. Record where splash, chemical exposure, and frequent wiping are expected.
- Separate visual goals from performance claims. Write “calm,” “bright,” or “continuous” as design objectives. Write cleaning frequency, disinfectant compatibility, and repair access as technical requirements. Do not use an aesthetic description as evidence of regulatory compliance.
- Map each custom element. Identify which counters, basins, backsplashes, and wall interfaces are to be fabricated in Corian®. A clear scope prevents a monolithic concept from becoming an undefined promise at tender stage.
- Build the palette around the patient experience. A light neutral can support an open visual field, while a deep accent can add hierarchy. Confirm how colors read under the clinic’s actual lighting; the Porto Alegre case study gives an intention, not a lighting calculation.
- Resolve geometry with the fabricator early. Request coordinated drawings showing thicknesses, joints, access panels, sink interfaces, radii where applicable, and tolerances. If a curved feature is essential, name its radius and location instead of relying on a general style label.
- Document cleaning and maintenance. Obtain the approved care instructions for the installed finish, identify products that could damage it, and establish a process for reporting scratches, burns, or failed joints. The material’s described cleanability does not remove the need for this documentation.
- Verify the installed result. Before handover, inspect color consistency, alignment, sealant, drainage, access, and the finish under the room’s operating lights. Keep photographs and as-built drawings with the clinic’s facilities records.
Questions to settle with an architect and fabricator
- Which surfaces are genuinely required to be custom, and which can remain conventional construction?
- Where will joints occur, and how will they be reached for inspection or repair?
- Does the selected color appear consistent under daylight, examination lighting, and evening lighting?
- If a curved form is part of the brief, what radius, tolerance, and support method are specified?
- How do basin depth, splash control, cabinetry, plumbing, and cleaning access work together?
- Which cleaning agents and contact times are approved for the installed finish?
- What documentation will demonstrate that the completed work matches the approved drawings?
What the Porto Alegre case study does not establish
The published project description is intentionally visual and conceptual. It does not provide a construction date, project cost, room dimensions, counter thickness, basin count, fabrication method, maintenance schedule, measured hygiene outcomes, or a named sanitary standard. It also does not compare Corian® with another surface material or rank AllForm against other fabricators.
Those omissions do not weaken the design lesson; they define its limits. The page is strong evidence for the project’s authorship, material applications, colors, visual aims, and stated cleaning rationale. It is not a substitute for a technical specification, healthcare compliance review, cost plan, or post-occupancy study.
Bottom line
Salvagni’s Porto Alegre clinic shows how custom Corian® work can make counters and lavatories part of a coherent healthcare interior rather than isolated fixtures. Glacier White supports the counter’s stated light and serenity goals, Chic Aubergine adds depth within the lavatory palette, and the monolithic approach gives the project a continuous visual identity. The most accurate description is a custom, calm, sanitation-conscious design language; the available case study does not independently document a specific curved feature or prove a clinical hygiene outcome.
