A 1,928-square-foot summer house in North Falmouth, Massachusetts, now serves a young family without losing the color-based room names it carried through generations. House Beautiful’s September 29, 2026 tour identifies the Green Room, Purple Room, Blue Room and Marigold Room across the home’s three-bedroom plan. The names are not a gimmick: they preserve childhood memories while giving each space a practical role today.
Designer Kathryn Hufton, architect Cheryl Perrault, builder Orchard Builders and stylist Kerryn Connolly extensively reworked the first floor, added a new staircase, renovated the bathrooms and opened the formerly dark kitchen to adjacent rooms. Their approach kept the house’s summer character while making circulation, storage and entertaining work for a current family.

The homeowner spent childhood summers in this North Falmouth house and later returned to renovate it for her own young family. The color identities predated the project, so the design team treated them as part of the architecture’s emotional history rather than labels to replace.
Hufton describes the brief as “refined, but never precious”—a home for “sandy feet, lingering dinners, and all the beautiful chaos of summer.” She also says, “The house represents a simpler way of life that so many of us remember and miss.” The renovation’s goal, she explains, was “never to change that spirit, but to carry those traditions and memories forward for the next generation.”

House Beautiful describes three bedrooms but uses four color-room headings in its tour. That apparent mismatch is best understood as a family naming tradition applied to the named sleeping and flexible guest spaces, not as a claim that the house has four conventional bedrooms. The source does not publish a street address or the homeowner’s name.

The Green Room: preserve the identity, deepen the texture
The Green Room keeps its established name while gaining a more layered envelope. Grasscloth wallpaper supplies a tactile backdrop, and naturally woven framed artwork reinforces the connection to coastal materials. Patterned bedding and a vintage patchwork quilt make the room feel accumulated over time instead of purchased as a matching set.
Cooking Apple Green by Farrow & Ball appears on the trim. The saturated green gives the existing identity a clear visual anchor, while custom Lisa Fine Textiles draperies, an Oomph Home nightstand and a Serena & Lily desk chair add different scales and textures. An Elliston House wallcovering and a Fibreworks rug from Landry & Arcari complete the source-listed scheme.
For a painter, the useful lesson is that a named color does not have to cover every surface. Trim can carry the strongest version of the room’s identity while wallpaper, textiles and vintage pieces provide variation.
The Purple Room: childhood continuity without a museum feel
The Purple Room is where the homeowner slept as a child, making its continuity especially personal. Homespun Charm trim paint by Benjamin Moore frames Pintura Studio wallpaper, so the room reads as an intentional adult renovation rather than a preserved childhood snapshot.

The room demonstrates how to update a sentimental space: retain the identifying color, then change scale, fabric and lighting so the result supports the family using it now.
The Blue Room: a primary bedroom organized around water views
The Blue Room serves as the primary bedroom, and its palette responds directly to the home’s water views. Borrowed Light by Farrow & Ball is used on the trim, while Colefax & Fowler wallpaper adds pattern without blocking the view-led atmosphere.
Function is built into the design. New or reworked built-ins provide storage, and a dedicated vanity gives the room a defined daily-use zone. Custom Pierre Frey Roman shades and Schumacher draperies control light and privacy; a Visual Comfort & Co. pendant supplies the central fixture. A Serena & Lily chair in Ferran Textiles, Serena & Lily and Jon Robshaw bedding, and a Stanton Carpet rug from Landry & Arcari finish the room.
This is the clearest example of color supporting planning: blue establishes the mood, while storage and a vanity solve practical needs that a purely decorative makeover would leave untouched.
The Marigold Room: one small room, two jobs
The Marigold Room uses Dayroom Yellow by Farrow & Ball on the trim and Peter Fasano wallpaper on the walls. Its trundle bed allows the compact room to function as daytime space and still accommodate overnight guests.
An Oyster Creek Studios bed, custom Pukka Print Roman shade and custom Arniko Woodworks nightstands complete the furnishings named in the tour. The trundle is the key planning move: instead of dedicating the smallest room permanently to a bed, the family gains flexibility without abandoning the room’s color identity.
When adapting this idea, measure the bed in both stored and extended positions, and keep the circulation path clear in the room’s daytime configuration. The source does not provide dimensions for this room, so its exact furniture clearances cannot be inferred.

How the shared rooms carry the same story
Entry
A custom storage installation replaces a small coat closet, adding capacity where a summer house needs it most. White Dove by Benjamin Moore covers the entry walls, while Vert de Terre by Farrow & Ball colors the built-ins. An Elizabeth Eakins rug and an Arteriors Home flushmount add pattern and light at the threshold.
Living room and game area
The living room is arranged around water views and kept light and bright. Two original chairs were reupholstered instead of discarded, making inherited furniture part of the finished room. The source lists an Arhaus couch, Oyster Creek Studios coffee table, Serena & Lily side tables, Christopher Spitzmiller lamps with Inchyra shades and custom Colefax and Fowler draperies.
An Oomph Home game table and Memoir Design game chairs with custom Fermoie cushions extend the room into family play and entertaining. The combination shows how a durable, informal use can sit comfortably beside more tailored upholstery.
Kitchen
The formerly dark, closed-off kitchen was opened toward the surrounding rooms to improve light, connection and gathering. White Dove appears on the cabinetry, with custom VOLGA Linen cafe curtains, Serena & Lily stools and Armac Martin hardware. Perrin & Rowe sink fixtures and a polished marble counter supply the functional finishes named by the magazine.
Dining room
The original dining table remains. Heirloom chairs were collected, refinished in blue and green, and returned to it, while a Land of Belle tablecloth and White Dove walls provide a calm setting for the mixed seating. Keeping the table and changing the chairs’ finish is a low-erasure strategy: the family’s object remains central while the palette evolves around it.
Office and flexible guest space
Built-in bookcases make use of the office’s small footprint. The room serves as a quiet workspace, guest sleeping space and display area for sentimental objects. Phillip Jeffries wallcovering, a butterfly-patterned Caitlin McGauley ceiling wallpaper, a Stanton rug from Landry & Arcari, a Serena & Lily desk chair and a Visual Comfort & Co. flushmount are listed in the tour.
The ceiling treatment is deliberately playful, but the built-ins keep the floor clear. That balance—one expressive surface paired with efficient storage—prevents a small multipurpose room from feeling visually chaotic.

What this renovation says about color-led design
Memory can be a design constraint
Because the room names already carried meaning, the team did not begin with a blank palette. Green, purple, blue and marigold became parameters that guided paint, wallpaper and textiles. A constraint like this can make decisions easier: every new finish has to support the room’s established identity.

The project substantially changed the first floor, staircase and bathrooms, yet the emotional strategy was conservative. Opening the kitchen and improving circulation addressed present-day use without erasing the summer-house character. The result is not a claim that the renovation was inexpensive or minor; House Beautiful supplies no budget, construction schedule or measured before-and-after performance.
Pattern and texture keep color from becoming flat
Grasscloth, woven art, patchwork, wallpaper, drapery and upholstery appear repeatedly. These layers let a strong trim color read as part of a composition instead of a single-color box. The same principle works in a painted room: vary sheen, fabric and natural materials before adding another competing wall color.
Furniture reuse carries family history forward
The reupholstered living-room chairs and refinished dining chairs are practical examples of preservation. Reuse does not mean leaving an inherited piece untouched; changing the covering or finish can make it work with a new palette while retaining its story.
How to borrow the idea for your own rooms
- Start with the room’s existing story. Decide whether a color name, heirloom, view or childhood association is worth preserving before choosing a paint chip.
- Assign the strongest color to one controllable element. In this house, trim often carries the named hue. Walls, wallpaper or furniture can then provide contrast without diluting the identity.
- Match the palette to the room’s job. A primary bedroom may need storage and a vanity; a compact guest room may need a trundle; an office may need built-ins and clear floor space.
- Test paint beside permanent materials. Place sample boards next to wallpaper, rugs, upholstery and existing wood. A color that looks right alone can shift beside patterned textiles or changing daylight.
- Keep one or two inherited pieces visible. Reupholstering a chair or refinishing a table can connect the new work to the home’s history more convincingly than buying a matching replacement set.
- Plan the prep before the finish. Repair dents, clean walls, protect adjacent wallpaper or trim, and establish a consistent surface before applying the selected color. The Cape Cod project’s appeal depends on precise combinations, not paint color in isolation.
- Use flexible furniture where space is limited. A trundle, built-in storage or a desk that doubles as a display area allows one room to support more than one season of family life.
What is—and is not—documented about the project
House Beautiful’s September 29, 2026 feature is the basis for the room descriptions and named materials. It establishes the home’s size, room count, design team, renovation scope and color-room identities. It does not publish the homeowner’s name or address, renovation date, budget, product prices, energy results, resale effects or independent performance testing. The named paints, wallpapers, rugs and furnishings should therefore be read as project documentation, not as tested recommendations or a guarantee of current availability.
The complete tour and its room-by-room photographs are available in House Beautiful’s feature.
The takeaway
This Cape Cod renovation succeeds because color is treated as family history and as a planning tool. The Green, Purple, Blue and Marigold identities survive alongside an opened kitchen, new storage, flexible sleeping arrangements and rooms designed for everyday use. For a painter, the most transferable idea is simple: choose a color with a reason, let trim or another focused surface carry it confidently, and use texture, pattern and useful furniture to make the memory livable.
