Inside the Rågeleje Summer House Kitchen: A Bold Green Island for Year-Round Living

A Rågeleje summer house renovation shows how an open plan, warm off-white cabinetry and one vivid green island can make a 12-square-meter kitchen social, practical and connected to the garden.

A late-1960s summer house in Rågeleje, less than an hour north of Copenhagen, became a year-round home by making one carefully judged move: the kitchen, dining area and living room were opened toward the garden, then anchored by a vivid green island. Warm off-white perimeter cabinets, a thin stainless-steel worktop and restrained finishes let that island stand out without making the 12-square-meter room feel busy.

Homeowner and architect Anna Mee Dybbroe Andersen worked with her architect father on the renovation. Their approach kept plumbing and electrical locations where they were, used family carpentry labor, and spent most generously on new windows. The result shows how a small kitchen can gain light, sociability and everyday practicality without losing the character of a wooden summer house.

What the renovation set out to solve

The family had used the coastal house for weekend getaways before deciding it needed to function in every season. That meant more than replacing cabinets. The kitchen had to participate in daily life, connect to the garden and support serious cooking while still belonging to the architecture of a modest wooden retreat.

Andersen described the goal as making the kitchen “better to use for the whole year—not only in the summertime.” The plan therefore joined cooking, dining and lounging rather than treating the kitchen as a closed utility room. Sightlines now run from the work area through the dining and living zones to the garden, so the room feels larger than its measured footprint.

The project was reported by Architectural Digest on September 8, 2022, in a feature by Morgan Goldberg with photography by Monica Grue Steffensen. The following figures and product details describe that completed home, not a universal specification for every summer house.

Major cost choice Plumbing and electrical points retained; carpentry completed by Andersen’s father and a friend
Largest splurge New Velfac 200 windows, according to Andersen

Why the open plan works in such a small footprint

Opening the three adjoining rooms did not simply remove a wall. It changed what the kitchen does. Instead of ending at a doorway, the work area now faces the garden and shares light with the dining and living spaces. That arrangement makes cooking visible and conversational, which is particularly useful in a weekend home where several people may gather around one meal.

The island is the device that keeps the open plan legible. It separates the kitchen from the dining zone without creating a visual barrier. Andersen called it “a place where you hang around, so it’s a social element.” In practice, that means the island can host chopping, serving, homework or a conversation while the perimeter run remains available for storage and appliances.

Retaining the existing service positions was an important technical decision. Moving a sink, waste pipe or electrical circuit can trigger floor opening, rerouting and patching across several rooms. By designing the new arrangement around the established points, the team directed money toward visible improvements and the windows that most affected comfort and daylight. A different house may have poor drainage, unsafe wiring or an immovable structural wall, so a services-in-place strategy should follow an inspection rather than a blanket rule.

The palette: quiet perimeter, deliberate green

The visual contrast is precise rather than loud. Perimeter cabinetry uses Reform Basis fronts in a custom NCS S 0804-Y30R off-white. Andersen chose a warm off-white because direct sun reaches the cabinets; a cooler, stark white could have looked harsh against the timber house and shifted noticeably through the day.

The island is green Reform Match by Muller Van Severen. Its color gives the room a single, unmistakable focal point while the surrounding cabinetry recedes. This is a useful way to introduce a strong hue in a compact kitchen: concentrate it on one architectural volume and let the walls, floor and tall units support it.

“I really like green,” Andersen said.

Anna Mee Dybbroe Andersen, as quoted by Architectural Digest

The combination also demonstrates why a green island does not require green cabinets everywhere. The island can carry the personality, while warm neutrals prevent the room from becoming visually fragmented. If you are selecting paint for a similar composition, compare samples beside the actual cabinet finish and in direct sunlight. Undertones that look beige in a shaded showroom can read cream, peach or gray beside a saturated green.

Painting the background so the kitchen feels integrated

Andersen said, “We kept one wood wall, but then the rest we made out of new drywall because we wanted the kitchen to be invisible, growing into the spatial design.” That statement explains the restrained wall treatment: the cooking area was meant to extend the architecture, not announce itself as a freestanding installation.

Dyrup paint was used on the walls. For a comparable project, finish new drywall with a complete primer coat before judging color; unprimed joint compound absorbs paint unevenly and can create flashing under side light. Sand repaired areas, remove dust, and apply the finish coat in consistent sections so the open-plan sightline does not reveal lap marks. Keep the warm off-white cabinetry sample, green island sample and floor board together while choosing sheen. A low-sheen wall finish generally minimizes glare near windows, while cabinetry and high-contact surfaces need coatings specified for their substrate and cleaning demands.

Protect the stainless worktop, sink edge and hardware during painting. Masking alone is not a substitute for drop cloths and careful cutting-in around newly installed units. On a timber wall that remains exposed, test any adjacent color for how it changes the wood’s apparent warmth rather than assuming the same white will behave as it does on drywall.

Materials and products that define the room

Component Selection in the Rågeleje kitchen Design role or stated reason
Perimeter fronts Reform Basis, custom NCS S 0804-Y30R off-white Warm counterpoint to direct sun and the green island
Island Green Reform Match by Muller Van Severen Divider between kitchen and dining; social gathering point
Countertop Reform stainless steel Thin profile; Andersen described it as durable
Sink detail Lavabo welded steel worktop and sink Welded transition avoids a raised edge, according to Andersen
Faucet Vola KV1 Chosen partly for its simple Danish design
Floor Whitewashed pine Maintains warmth in the wooden house
Wall paint Dyrup Supports the quiet, integrated background
Refrigerator IKEA Isande Selected within a minimalist appliance scheme
Oven AEG Size and capability influenced by the partner’s bread and cake baking
Cooktop Eico Part of the understated appliance line-up
Windows Velfac 200 Andersen identified the windows as the largest splurge
Drapes Lea Paulsen Softens the large glazed openings

The source attributes the stainless steel’s durability to Andersen; it does not provide an independent abrasion, heat or corrosion test. Stainless can develop scratches and a changing patina, which some owners value and others do not. Decide whether that evolving surface suits your maintenance expectations before specifying it, and ask the fabricator how seams, thickness, edge profiles and support will be handled.

How the island balances work and sociability

The green block is not just additional counter area. Its position establishes a boundary between active preparation and the dining table while preserving conversation across the room. That dual role is why the island reads as an architectural object rather than a row of cabinets in a different color.

When adapting the idea, establish circulation before choosing a finish. Mark the proposed island footprint with tape or cardboard and walk the route while carrying a tray, opening the refrigerator and standing at the sink. Check the clearance at every pinch point, including the path to the garden. The featured kitchen’s exact island dimensions and clearances were not reported, so they should not be copied as fixed numbers.

Use the island’s material to reinforce its purpose. Andersen specifically praised the HDPE cutting-board plastic used in the island. A non-porous work surface can make everyday chopping feel natural, but it still needs a cleaning routine compatible with the manufacturer’s care instructions. If the island will serve as a dining perch, coordinate overhang, seating height, lighting and circulation rather than treating those as afterthoughts.

Making a summer-house kitchen work in every season

Year-round use depends on the whole envelope and the household’s routines, not on cabinetry alone. In this project, the new windows were the biggest reported splurge, signaling that daylight, views and the building shell mattered as much as the joinery. The feature does not publish insulation values, heating performance or energy calculations, so those cannot be inferred from the renovation.

Appliance choices were tied to real use. The partner’s bread and cake baking influenced the oven requirements, while the refrigerator and cooktop were selected to keep the visual language minimalist. This is a more reliable selection method than choosing appliances by appearance first: list the largest pan, tallest cake tin, busiest cooking day and storage needs, then confirm dimensions, ventilation and electrical loads with the installer.

Whitewashed pine flooring preserves the warmth associated with the original wooden house. In a coastal setting, confirm how the chosen finish handles wet shoes, sand and frequent cleaning. A pale floor reflects light into the open plan, but it can also show grit quickly; the maintenance trade-off belongs in the decision, alongside the color.

What the reported budget does—and does not—tell you

The completed project was reported at 112,000 Danish kroner, about US$15,000 at the time of the September 2022 article. Andersen said pandemic-related material price increases pushed the work above its anticipated spend. The figure is a household-reported final bill for this particular 12-square-meter kitchen; it is not an audited account, a current exchange-rate conversion or a renovation benchmark.

Two cost controls are clear. First, the team retained plumbing and electrical locations. Second, Andersen’s father and a friend carried out carpentry work. Those savings may not exist for another household, and unpaid or family labor still requires appropriate skills, insurance, supervision and compliance with local rules. The windows consumed the largest share of discretionary spending, according to Andersen, because they affected the character and year-round performance of the house.

For a current project, request itemized quotes for demolition, cabinetry, worktops, appliances, glazing, electrical work, plumbing, painting, flooring and disposal. Price volatility, import costs, labor rates, taxes and site access can move the total substantially from the historical Danish figure.

A practical sequence for adapting the idea

  1. Survey the existing shell. Record structural walls, window openings, plumbing routes, electrical circuits, floor levels and moisture conditions before drawing the new plan.
  2. Define the connection to outdoors. Decide which sightline should reach the garden and whether windows or doors need upgrading. Treat glazing as a building decision, not merely a kitchen accessory.
  3. Map circulation with temporary marks. Tape the perimeter cabinets and island on the floor. Test refrigerator, sink, oven and garden-door routes at the same time.
  4. Choose the quiet background. Select a warm neutral for perimeter fronts and walls, then evaluate it in morning, midday and evening light. A custom color code such as NCS S 0804-Y30R is a reference point, not a guarantee that another material will match it exactly.
  5. Give one element the visual emphasis. A green island can act as the room’s anchor while the perimeter remains calm. If the architecture is already colorful, use a quieter island instead of adding competing accents.
  6. Specify surfaces by use. Confirm stainless-steel thickness and edge treatment, sink fabrication, cutting-board care, floor finish and wall-paint sheen with the relevant trades.
  7. Fit appliances to habits. Measure the cookware and baking equipment you actually use, then verify clearances, ventilation and electrical requirements before ordering.
  8. Plan the paint work around installation. Prime and finish drywall before delicate hardware arrives when possible; protect worktops and cabinet fronts, and keep touch-up paint labeled for later repairs.
  9. Separate shell costs from finish costs. Keep glazing, services and structural work visible in the budget so a beautiful island does not consume money needed for year-round comfort.
  10. Review the room as one composition. Stand at the dining table, sink and garden opening. The island, cabinet color, floor, windows and paint should read as parts of the same architectural idea.

Design decisions worth borrowing

  • Borrow the hierarchy: let one saturated island provide identity while warm off-white cabinetry and restrained walls reduce visual noise.
  • Borrow the social function: design the island as a place to pause and gather, not only as extra storage.
  • Borrow the service discipline: keeping viable plumbing and electrical points can preserve budget for daylight, craftsmanship or better finishes.
  • Borrow the evidence-based appliance brief: choose the oven and refrigerator around the household’s actual cooking patterns.
  • Do not borrow the price blindly: the 2022 Danish total reflects one home, one labor arrangement and one moment in the market.
  • Do not assume a color chip travels unchanged: direct sun, pine, drywall, stainless steel and neighboring green all alter how an off-white appears.

The architectural lesson

Andersen said, “We wanted it to be an extension of the architecture.” That is the central idea behind the Rågeleje kitchen. The renovation succeeds visually because the boldest object is balanced by quiet planes, natural timber and a view to the garden. It succeeds functionally because the open plan, island and appliances were organized around how the family lives, while the existing service locations and family labor helped contain disruption.

For anyone updating a compact weekend house, the transferable strategy is not a particular cabinet line or shade of green. It is the sequence: understand the building, preserve what works, open the spaces that limit daily life, then use one confident element to give the new kitchen a center of gravity.
