Francesca Bodini’s weekend retreat in Dutchess County, New York, makes a convincing case for designing a country house around real family life rather than around a single decorating style. The low-slung contemporary building sits on her father’s nearly 1,000-acre estate, while its rooms combine custom work, vintage finds, inherited objects, art and comfortable furniture. The most theatrical gesture is upstairs: her grandmother’s former candle chandelier now hangs in a primary bedroom whose ceiling is tented in Dedar Fanfara silk shantung.

Architectural Digest’s David Foxley profiled the house on August 27, 2026. Bodini, the mother of three school-age children, asked interior designer Rafael de Cárdenas for a home that could absorb children, dogs and everyday use without losing a sense of occasion. That brief—not a preset period style—explains why a formal crystal fixture, practical seating and collected art can occupy the same visual world.
The idea behind the house: ease first, personality second
Bodini grew up spending weekends and summers on the property after her father, Daniele Bodini, bought it in 1982. The new retreat is therefore not an isolated country escape; it is another layer in a long family relationship with the estate. Her instruction to the design team was unusually clear about how the house should feel. “I wanted everything to be chill for my kids and the dogs,” Bodini told Foxley. She also described the target as “very comfortable, usable, not overly precious, and fun at the same time.” Those words account for the project’s anything-goes spirit more effectively than a list of colors or furniture periods: use determines the atmosphere, and personal meaning determines which objects are allowed in.
De Cárdenas recognized the opportunity in that freedom. “There was something kind of nice about having this project that was mutually cool,” he said. The result is not a themed interior. It is a relaxed framework in which a bespoke rug, a vintage light, a family heirloom and contemporary seating can each retain its own identity.
Where the Dutchess County retreat sits
The house occupies part of the Bodini family’s nearly 1,000-acre Dutchess County estate. That figure describes this individual property, as reported by Architectural Digest in 2026; it is not a general measure of country-house sites. Existing outbuildings were already part of the landscape, so the architecture was conceived to sit comfortably among them rather than compete with them.
A contemporary profile with rural materials
Raffaella Bortoluzzi Architecture designed a low-slung, contemporary structure. Teak siding gives the exterior a warm, tactile surface; a stone chimney provides a grounded vertical element; broad glazing opens the rooms to the estate; and a sloping bronze-colored roof adds a restrained metallic note. Together those choices make the building modern without making it feel detached from the agricultural structures around it.
The broad windows are part of the same strategy as the low roof and teak: the house reads as a long, horizontal presence in the landscape. Rather than imitate the outbuildings, it uses compatible materials and a similarly calm scale. That relationship is important because the estate is not merely a view beyond the glass; it is the setting that gives the retreat its meaning.

The landscape follows an anything-goes brief of its own
Bodini applied the same desire for informality outdoors, but with a very specific ecological and visual rule. “I was really specific and only wanted wild grasses, no flowers. And everything had to be wild, or it had to grow independently,” she said. Sarah Drake Weihman’s landscape work therefore emphasizes self-directed growth instead of a highly manicured garden display.
That choice does more than reduce maintenance. Wild grasses give the contemporary house a soft, changing edge, while the absence of a flower palette keeps attention on the land’s texture and seasonal movement. It also prevents the landscape from becoming a decorative frame that would compete with the building’s teak, stone and bronze roof. The planting is intentionally legible as part of the estate rather than as a separate ornamental composition.
The tented primary bedroom and its rewired chandelier
The primary bedroom is where the house’s relaxed practicality is allowed to become openly theatrical. Bodini wanted this room to feel “fancy,” and the ceiling provides the most memorable answer: Dedar Fanfara silk shantung is tented across it around a crystal chandelier that belonged to her grandmother.
An heirloom changed from candlelight to electricity
The fixture carries a piece of family history that is visible in the renovation itself. “When she gave it to me, it wasn’t wired because the people who worked for her every night would put candles in it and light it,” Bodini explained. It was rewired for electric light before being installed in the retreat. The intervention preserves the chandelier’s form while making it suitable for contemporary domestic use.
That is a more thoughtful approach than treating an heirloom as untouchable. The object remains recognizable and emotionally specific, but its infrastructure has been updated so it can function safely as part of the room. The tented ceiling then gives the chandelier an architectural setting rather than presenting it as an isolated decorative object.

Why the ceiling works with the rest of the room
Silk shantung changes the perception of the ceiling through its sheen and drape, creating a soft enclosure above the bed. The fabric’s controlled luster answers the crystal’s sparkle, while the tent form introduces an intimate, almost theatrical geometry inside an otherwise contemporary house. Because the ceiling treatment is concentrated in the primary bedroom, it reads as a deliberate mood shift rather than a style imposed on every room.

The interiors gain their character from contrast, but the contrasts are edited rather than random. De Cárdenas placed bespoke elements beside older designs, art and objects with personal associations. The source credits identify several pieces and clarify where specificity matters.

The classifications matter. A custom rug is not interchangeable with a vintage light, and an inherited chandelier carries a different meaning from a newly purchased pendant. By allowing each category to remain visible, the rooms avoid the anonymous consistency of a single showroom collection.
Furniture that supports actual family use
Bodini’s children and dogs are not a side note to the decoration; they are the test the decoration has to pass. Seating and textiles therefore need to make sense at the scale of daily life, even when their provenance is significant. Cassina seating and the upholstered bed show how recognizable design can still serve an ordinary routine, while the broader mix of surfaces keeps the house from feeling over-coordinated.

“Not overly precious” does not mean careless. It means that a valuable or delicate-looking object is placed within a composition that includes robust, comfortable and useful elements. The house’s success comes from that calibration: visual pleasure is present, but it does not forbid occupancy.

The interior freedom works because the building supplies a quiet envelope. Teak, stone, glazing and the bronze-colored roof establish a limited architectural vocabulary. Inside that envelope, fabrics, lighting and art can vary without making the house feel disjointed. The restraint is in the structure; the exuberance is in the objects and rooms.
The estate context reinforces the same balance. The house is contemporary, yet its materials and horizontal profile acknowledge the existing outbuildings. The landscape is deliberately wild rather than ornamental. Those decisions leave room for the chandelier, silk ceiling and collected pieces to provide the moments of drama. A more aggressively styled exterior or a heavily planted garden would have competed with them.
De Cárdenas’s work can therefore be read as an act of sequencing. First comes a practical brief, then an architectural setting that is calm and durable, then a collection of furnishings and art allowed to retain their different histories. The visual coherence comes from the order in which those decisions were made, not from making every object look alike.
What this house demonstrates for anyone planning a country interior
Start with behavior, not a style label
List who will use each room, how often, and what kinds of mess or movement are unavoidable. Bodini’s request for a comfortable, usable home for three school-age children and dogs established a stronger design direction than a label such as modern, rustic or eclectic could have done.

Give one inherited object room to lead
The grandmother’s chandelier became the organizing point of the primary bedroom because it had a story and a distinctive physical presence. Updating its wiring made it useful without erasing its history. An inherited object does not need to dictate every finish, but it benefits from a setting that acknowledges its importance.
Use custom work where scale or function demands it

Make the landscape part of the design brief
Bodini’s insistence on wild grasses and self-sufficient growth demonstrates that planting preferences can shape the character of the entire property. A landscape does not have to be elaborate to be specific; a clear rule can be more powerful than a long plant list.
How to read the “anything-goes” spirit accurately
Anything-goes does not mean that every object was chosen without discipline. The house has a clear hierarchy. The architecture is quiet and tied to the estate; the landscape is intentionally unmanicured; the rooms are comfortable enough for children and dogs; and selected pieces—the tented ceiling, crystal chandelier, custom rug, vintage light and art—supply moments of emphasis.
That hierarchy is why the primary bedroom can be extravagant without making the entire retreat feel formal. The silk shantung and crystal are concentrated where Bodini wanted a fancier mood, while the broader house remains grounded in use. The project’s lesson is not to add more statement pieces. It is to decide where a statement belongs, then give it enough calm around it to be legible.
