Interactive motion displays can turn a table, bar or other architectural surface into a visual experience that responds to people nearby. Interactivity describes applications ranging from table-side food ordering and children’s entertainment to library learning and paper-free product browsing. The concept is credible as a design approach, but the available supplier material does not prove a particular increase in satisfaction, sales, dwell time or engagement. Treat it as a custom experience system that needs a clear use case, venue testing and its own outcome measurements.
What Interactivity’s motion displays are
Architecture & Design lists Interactivity as a supplier offering interactive motion displays projected onto bars and tables. The listing presents the idea in customer-experience terms, while Interactivity’s own interactive-table page gives the clearest description of the underlying format: a conventional table becomes a motion-driven display, and digital content reacts to the movements of one person or several people.

This is different from a static menu screen or a decorative video loop. The visual content is designed to change when people move within the experience. A table might show animated objects that scatter, swim or fly; a service surface might reveal information when a visitor approaches; or a hospitality installation might provide a visual layer around an ordering process. The precise behavior depends on the sensors, software, projection layout and content created for the project.
Interactivity describes its work in promotional language, saying, “Interactivity’s Interactive tables bring client experience to a whole new level, transforming any table into a motion driven display.” It also says, “Our digital creations can swim, fly, hop and react to every movement of the person or people involved.” Those statements explain the intended experience, not an independently measured result.

How a motion-responsive table works
Projection creates the visible layer
A projector places animated imagery on the table or another surface. In a venue, the projector may be mounted above the surface, concealed in a structure or arranged for rear projection. The image is only one part of the installation: the surface, mounting position, ambient light, viewing angles and physical circulation all affect whether the content is legible and compelling.
Sensors detect participation
The system needs a way to detect movement and pass that information to the interactive software. The public description does not specify a universal sensor type, tracking range or response time. Those details must be established for each commission. A simple installation may react when someone enters a zone; a more elaborate one may distinguish multiple participants and map activity to different areas of the table.
Software maps movement to content
Once movement is detected, the content engine decides what changes on screen. A ripple, animation, game element, information panel or product view can be triggered. Because the content is custom, the same physical table could support several modes at different times, provided the commissioned system includes the required software and operating workflow.
Do not assume that “interactive” means touch. Interactivity’s description emphasizes movement, while touch, gesture, proximity and other input methods are separate design choices. Put the required interaction method in the brief and ask the supplier to demonstrate it on the proposed surface.
Where the format can be used
Bars and hospitality venues
The Architecture & Design listing specifically refers to projection onto bars and tables. In a bar or restaurant, a motion display can add atmosphere to a service counter, occupy customers while they wait or provide an interface for table-side food orders. Interactivity names ordering as a possible use, but the page does not establish a connection to any particular point-of-sale system, payment provider or kitchen workflow. Confirm those integrations separately.

Hospitality teams should decide whether the display is primarily an ordering tool, entertainment, wayfinding or branding. Combining all four can make the surface difficult to understand. A short, observable action—such as selecting a menu category—usually needs a different content design from an open-ended animated attraction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChildren’s entertainment
Interactivity lists entertaining children among the possible applications. Motion-reactive creatures, games or visual effects can make a table a shared activity rather than a passive screen. A venue should still define age range, supervision, session length, cleaning requirements and what happens when several children interact at once. Those are commissioning questions, not specifications supplied by the vendor.
Libraries and tertiary education
The vendor also describes visitor learning in libraries and tertiary education settings. A projected surface could present a map, timeline, scientific visualization or collection browser that changes as people move. The educational objective should come first: identify the information visitors must understand, then decide which movement response helps them discover it. An attractive animation without a clear learning task may be memorable without being useful.
Product browsing without paper
Interactivity cites browsing products without paper as another use. A visitor might explore categories, compare finishes or reveal additional information on a table. The source does not state how product data is managed, how often it can be updated or whether stock and pricing are connected. Ask who owns content updates and what happens if the display is offline.
What the Box Hill Shopping Centre example shows
Interactivity’s Box Hill Shopping Centre case study documents a specific themed playground and food-court installation. It describes an ultra short-throw projector positioned in a rocket structure to provide rear projection, together with sensors, augmented-reality screens and interactive games.

This example is useful because it shows how motion displays can be combined with scenic construction and several interactive elements in a public venue. It is not a specification for every Interactivity table. The case study does not name the projector model, state image brightness or resolution, identify sensor hardware, publish a price or describe a standard installation package. A project team should therefore treat it as a reference installation and request a design tailored to its own site.
The projector category mentioned in the case is an ultra short-throw projector. That phrase is a sensible starting point for a hardware conversation when a venue needs a short projection distance or wants equipment integrated into a structure. It is not evidence that a consumer projector alone can deliver a commercial interactive display, nor is it a recommendation of a particular model.
What is—and is not—established about customer experience
The title’s promise to enhance customer experience should be read as a supplier proposition. The Architecture & Design listing, Interactivity’s interactive-table page and the Box Hill case study do not report a controlled comparison, customer survey, sales uplift, dwell-time change, engagement rate or return on investment.
That evidence limit does not make the format unsuitable. It means the business case has to be built for the individual venue. Define the current experience, install a measurable pilot where practical and record the outcomes that matter to the operator. Possible measures include completed orders, time spent on an information task, repeat use, queue abandonment or staff interventions. Choose measures that match the intended purpose rather than claiming a general improvement.

How to brief an interactive display project
- State the visitor task. Write one primary outcome, such as placing a table-side order, exploring a collection or occupying children during a wait. Add secondary goals only after the main action is clear.
- Describe the surface and setting. Record whether the display will be on a bar, dining table, freestanding exhibit or a purpose-built scenic element. Include dimensions, sightlines, circulation, seating positions and expected crowding.
- Choose the interaction model. Specify whether the experience should respond to proximity, hand movement, multiple people, touch or another input. Ask for a live demonstration using a surface with similar geometry and finish.
- Set content responsibilities. Decide who supplies artwork, animation, product information, menus, educational copy and translations. Establish an approval process and a method for changing content after launch.
- Plan the technical environment. Request a layout showing projector locations, sensor positions, control equipment, power, network access, ventilation and service access. If rear projection is proposed, identify the enclosure and the surface material before fabrication.
- Define operating and safety rules. Clarify supervision, cleaning, public access, cable protection, brightness, sound levels and what the system displays during a fault. Public installations need a safe fallback mode, not a blank surface that confuses visitors.
- Agree on acceptance tests. Test the experience under the venue’s actual lighting and with the expected number of participants. Document response behavior, legibility, loading time, recovery after a restart and staff training before opening.
- Specify measurement. Record a baseline for the chosen outcome and decide how data will be collected without creating unnecessary privacy risks. A supplier’s animation quality and a business result are separate questions.
Design decisions that affect the result
Existing surface or dedicated build
Projecting onto an existing bar or table may reduce visible construction, but the surface, furniture, lighting and equipment access can limit what is practical. A dedicated built installation offers more control over projection geometry and concealment, as illustrated by the rocket structure in the Box Hill case, but adds fabrication and site coordination.
Front projection or rear projection
Rear projection can keep the projector behind the image plane and reduce the chance that visitors cast shadows across the content. The Box Hill case uses an ultra short-throw projector for rear projection in a themed structure. It does not establish that rear projection is required for every table, so compare both arrangements against the venue’s depth, access and maintenance constraints.
Single participant or group play
A display intended for one diner can use a more focused interaction zone. A library exhibit or playground must remain understandable when several people move at once. Ask the supplier to show what happens when participants overlap, leave halfway through an activity or approach from different sides.
Recommended Free Tools
Visual style and physical finishes
If the proposed surface is painted, patterned or glossy, include sample panels in the test. The design team should verify color, contrast and readability under the venue’s real lighting rather than approving content on a desktop monitor. This is especially important when the display carries menu text, instructions or educational information.
Questions to ask Interactivity before commissioning
- Which movement or sensor inputs are supported for this specific surface?
- What parts of the system are standard, and what will be custom-built?
- Can the proposed projector and sensors be demonstrated at the required distance and ambient-light level?
- How many people can interact at once, and how does the content behave when users overlap?
- Who supplies and maintains the content after launch?
- Can menus, product information or educational material be updated by venue staff?
- What equipment, network access, power and service clearances are required?
- What happens after a power interruption, software crash or sensor failure?
- Which accessibility alternatives are available for visitors who cannot use the intended movement?
- What installation, training, maintenance and content costs are included in the quotation?
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying hardware before defining the experience
An ultra short-throw projector is only one component mentioned in one custom case. Selecting a projector first can leave the team with unsuitable throw geometry, brightness or enclosure space. Start with the surface and visitor task, then specify the complete system.

Treating a promotional claim as a performance guarantee
Words such as “whole new level” describe Interactivity’s marketing position. They do not guarantee more orders, longer visits or higher satisfaction. Put desired outcomes and acceptance tests in the project agreement.
Ignoring staff and content operations
A display that cannot be updated, restarted or cleaned by the venue becomes a maintenance burden. Assign ownership for content changes, train staff on basic recovery and document escalation to the installer.

Bottom-line decision framework
Interactive motion displays are worth investigating when the venue has a defined visitor task, a surface that can accommodate projection and a team prepared to commission custom content and support. Interactivity’s published examples show possible applications in hospitality, entertainment, education, libraries and product discovery, plus a Box Hill installation combining rear projection, sensors, augmented-reality screens and games.
They are not a plug-and-play promise of better customer experience. No reviewed source quantifies commercial or engagement gains, and no universal hardware specification is provided. Commission a site-specific demonstration, document the technical and operational requirements, and measure the outcome that matters to your venue.
