An invitation card tells someone what the event is and invites them to attend. The right wording depends on the occasion, audience, and any family, cultural, or religious customs. Make the event, hosts, date, time, location, and response instructions clear; if you are mailing a paper invitation in the United States, check the assembled card and envelope against USPS rules before choosing postage.
What should you write on an invitation card?
Start by identifying the event and the people you are inviting. Use a tone that fits the occasion, then include the details a guest needs to decide and respond:
- The event and, where useful, its purpose.
- The host or hosts.
- The date, start time, and location.
- Any essential attendance details, such as how to respond and by when.
Customs differ by event and community, so there is no single wording formula for every invitation. Formal wedding wording has its own conventions; Emily Post’s Wedding Invitations 101 guide describes traditional guidance for that setting.

How does formal wedding wording differ?
Follow the formality and customs of the wedding
For a formal wedding, wording may reflect who is hosting and the style of the occasion. Follow the relevant family, cultural, and religious customs rather than treating a traditional example as a universal rule. Emily Post also notes that the invitation card and envelope can be coordinated in style and paper stock.
Use a response card when you need a reception count
A response card gives invited guests a clear way to reply and helps the hosts plan. Emily Post explains that response cards are included with wedding invitations to obtain an accurate reception guest count. Whether a separate card is appropriate depends on the event and how you are collecting replies.

Check every detail before printing
Before printing or ordering a batch, verify names, venue, date, time, and response instructions. Emily Post notes that printing costs money and that event details are easy to get wrong; the guide does not establish a universal printing cost or lead time.
How should you choose a card format?
Choose a format based on how much information guests need, whether a reply piece is useful, and how the finished invitation will be delivered.

Classify the complete mailpiece
USPS physical standards distinguish card-price mail from other letter and flat formats. The dimensions and thickness allowed for card pricing vary by card type, and a qualifying card is made from paper or cardstock. These are eligibility requirements for the relevant mail category—not a recommendation to make every invitation postcard-sized. Consult the current USPS Domestic Mail Manual physical standards for the category you intend to use.

Judge the assembled piece, including its envelope, inserts, thickness, shape, and flexibility. A folded card sent in an envelope is not a postcard merely because the card itself is made of cardstock. Unusual shapes or decorative embellishments can affect classification and processing, so do not assume they qualify as ordinary machine-processable mail.
Keep the delivery address easy to read
USPS consumer letter and postcard guidance says these mailpieces need to bend to fit high-speed sorting machines and cautions against putting rigid objects loose in unpadded paper envelopes. USPS Publication 25, identified as a November 2018 guide, also warns that script or Gothic-like styles can be difficult for automation to read in machinable mail; see its type-style guidance. That concern is about postal address readability, not a ban on decorative script in invitation artwork. Keep the delivery address clear and follow the current rules for the selected mail class.

Confirm postage using a finished sample
For a large mailing, assemble one representative invitation exactly as it will be sent, then check its current USPS classification and postage with USPS or a postal clerk. Dimensions, thickness, flexibility, and inserts can all matter; do not rely on a card’s appearance alone or assume a particular postage rate without checking current pricing.
