You can recreate an iOS 14-inspired iPhone Home Screen on newer iOS with a coordinated wallpaper, useful widgets, and intentional app placement. For the quickest setup, use Apple’s native icon appearance controls; for individually illustrated icons, add custom-image shortcuts to the Home Screen.

Newer versions add placement and appearance options, but menus and feature availability can vary by iPhone and iOS version. The ideas and steps below help you choose a look without sacrificing readability or easy access to essential apps.

What makes an iOS 14 aesthetic Home Screen?

  • A wallpaper that matches the color palette and leaves usable negative space.
  • Custom, tinted, monochrome, or otherwise coordinated icons.
  • One or two widgets for information or photos you actually want to see.
  • Intentional app placement instead of displaying every installed app.
  • Separate Home Screen pages for different needs, with less-used apps kept elsewhere.

There is no single “iOS 14 aesthetic.” Popular directions include pastel, beige, monochrome, dark academia, cottagecore, floral, celestial, retro/Y2K, fandom, scrapbook, and productivity-focused designs. The most convincing themes coordinate the wallpaper, widget backgrounds, icon contrast, and app placement instead of simply replacing every icon with a different picture.

Apple introduced Home Screen widgets and the App Library with iOS 14 in 2020, helping establish the visual style now associated with the “iOS 14 aesthetic.” Apple’s iOS 18 release notes describe newer Home Screen options, including open placement for icons and widgets, dark icons, color tinting, and larger icons without app names.

Choose your setup method first

Check your version at Settings → General → About → iOS Version. Menu names and available controls vary by release and device. Choose native controls for a simpler setup, or custom-image shortcuts if you want individual artwork.

Method Best for What you can customize Main trade-off
Native Apple customization A quick, lower-maintenance theme Icon appearance and size, wallpaper, widget placement, and Home Screen layout Less control over each icon’s individual artwork
Shortcuts with custom images A specific illustrated icon theme A shortcut’s Home Screen image and displayed name Requires preparing artwork and setting up shortcuts individually

Start with Apple’s built-in tools, then add custom icons only where they improve the design. Apple’s Home Screen customization guide covers icon and widget size, tint, and light, dark, and clear appearance options.

15 iOS 14 aesthetic Home Screen ideas

1. Minimal monochrome

Palette: black, white, gray, or one accent color. Use a plain, architectural, or softly textured wallpaper, one small Clock or Calendar widget, and a few frequently used apps. Native Dark or Tinted icon treatments can create a coordinated look without replacing individual icons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: legibility and low visual noise. Trade-off: it offers less personality than a fully illustrated theme.

2. Soft pastel

Choose one dominant pastel—pink, blue, lavender, or green—rather than mixing several nearly identical shades. Match icon treatment to the wallpaper and use a Photos or Calendar widget as the visual anchor. Keep widget text easy to read.

Best for: a gentle, decorative Home Screen. Trade-off: low-contrast pastel graphics can be difficult to use in bright light.

3. Neutral beige and warm brown

Pair a cream or tan wallpaper with brown icons, a warm widget background, and imagery of books, coffee, architecture, or landscapes. Decorative typography can reinforce the theme, but information widgets should remain readable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: a calm, editorial look. Trade-off: too many similar beige tones can make icons and text disappear.

4. Dark academia

Use charcoal, parchment, deep green, burgundy, and a dark library, desk, or antique-paper wallpaper. A Calendar, Reminders, reading-list, or countdown widget gives the theme practical value. Keep decorative images limited so the screen does not become crowded.

Best for: study and reading setups. Trade-off: dark wallpapers can reduce contrast when paired with dark icons.

5. Nature or floral

Select a flower, forest, sky, or landscape image with open space where icons will sit. Pull one or two colors from the image for the icons and widgets, and avoid placing high-contrast icons over the most detailed part of the photograph.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: a visually rich but coherent theme. Trade-off: the wallpaper crop may need adjustment for your iPhone.

6. Photo-grid or scrapbook

Use several photo widgets as visual tiles, with simple icons so the photos remain the focus. Arrange images by color, season, travel destination, or memory.

Best for: personal, collage-like designs. Trade-off: photo widgets may be decorative rather than interactive, depending on the app.

7. Retro or Y2K

Limit the palette to silver and blue, pink and chrome, or lime and black. Pair glossy, rounded icon artwork with a relatively plain wallpaper. Keep functional widgets separate from decorative ones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: high visual impact. Trade-off: novelty icons can be harder to recognize at a glance.

8. Floating or “invisible” icons

Use wallpaper-matched custom icon images, or native Clear-style icon controls where available. Place icons around the subject of the wallpaper so the image appears to continue through the layout.

These icons are not truly invisible in every situation. Wallpaper-matched shortcuts can be difficult to identify, and native appearance controls differ by iOS version.

9. Productivity dashboard

Use a Calendar, Reminders, Weather, Batteries, or task widget and keep decorative elements to a minimum. Put the apps needed for the day on the first page, with a separate page for other tools.

Best for: people who want the aesthetic to improve daily use. Trade-off: it looks less like a mood board.

10. Music theme

Coordinate colors and imagery around a favorite artist, album, or genre. Keep Music, Podcasts, and your most-used communication apps recognizable, even if less important apps receive themed icons.

Use artwork lawfully and do not imply endorsement by an artist or brand.

11. Fandom or gaming theme

Choose one fictional world, game, or show and limit the palette to its strongest colors. Use one character or environment as the wallpaper focal point, then reserve the remaining spaces for readable app icons and a practical widget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-off: fan-made assets may have unclear licensing and may not include every app you use.

12. Cottagecore

Try muted green, cream, dusty yellow, and floral or countryside imagery. A small weather widget and a photo widget work better than several competing decorative tiles.

Best for: soft, natural layouts. Trade-off: detailed floral wallpapers can obscure labels.

13. Celestial night

Use navy, black, silver, and muted purple with a moon, stars, or night-sky wallpaper. Add a Clock, Weather, or Calendar widget in a contrasting appearance.

Best for: dark-mode users. Trade-off: check that the theme remains readable with brightness reduced.

14. Color-blocked utility page

Assign one color to each group—communication, work, travel, and entertainment—while keeping the wallpaper simple. A widget can separate the blocks visually.

Best for: users who need to find apps quickly. Trade-off: the result is more organized than purely decorative.

15. Clean stock-iOS

Use Apple’s own icons, a restrained wallpaper, and one or two native widgets. Arrange apps across separate pages to keep the first page focused.

How to make an aesthetic Home Screen

  1. Choose one visual system. Pick a wallpaper and a restrained palette before placing icons. Treat the palette as a design choice, not a technical requirement.
  2. Choose the effort level. Keep native icons and use the system’s appearance controls for a quick setup, or prepare image files if you want custom artwork for individual shortcuts.
  3. Add useful widgets first. Enter Home Screen edit mode, open Add Widget, choose a widget and an available size, then place it. Available sizes depend on the app. Stack compatible widgets if you want to save space.
  4. Arrange apps around the composition. Newer iOS versions support open placement in available positions, including along the side or bottom. Put frequently used apps where they are convenient and leave space around the wallpaper’s focal point.
  5. Apply the icon treatment. Try native size, tint, dark, or clear appearance options first. On supported versions, larger icons remove app names underneath, so check whether you can still identify your apps.
  6. Review usability. Make sure essential apps remain easy to find and widgets show useful information. Keep separate Home Screen pages for different layouts if that suits your routine.

Apple notes that not every app offers every widget size. Feature availability can also vary by device and region, so check the controls on your iPhone rather than assuming every menu will match.

How to create custom app icons with Shortcuts

Use this approach when native icon styling cannot produce the individual artwork you want. Apple documents adding a shortcut to the Home Screen with a custom photo or file and an editable displayed name.

  1. Open Shortcuts and create a shortcut for the action or app you want to open.
  2. Open the shortcut’s details or sharing controls and choose the option to add it to the Home Screen.
  3. Tap the icon preview and choose a photo from Photos or an image file.
  4. Edit the displayed name if you want to change it.
  5. Review the shortcut and tap Add to place it on the Home Screen.

For the current workflow and available controls, follow Apple’s guide to adding a shortcut to the Home Screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom icon versus app icon

A custom-image shortcut is a shortcut on the Home Screen, not a replacement for the app’s underlying system icon. The original app can remain in the App Library or on another page. Do not delete the original app just because you removed its Home Screen icon.

Apple’s guide documents how to add shortcuts and custom images; it does not promise that shortcuts behave identically to native app icons. Keep essential apps easy to find and test your setup before relying on it.

How to add matching widgets

Apple widgets are a practical starting point because they can show useful information alongside apps. Add widgets you actually check, then arrange them with your icons and wallpaper. Apple’s widget guide explains how to add and edit widgets on iPhone.

  1. Touch and hold an empty area on the Home Screen until the icons begin to jiggle.
  2. Open the widget gallery using Add Widget or the available add control.
  3. Choose a widget and, if offered, a size.
  4. Add it to the Home Screen and drag it into the desired position.
  5. To save space, place compatible widgets in a stack and swipe between them. Apple says a widget stack can hold up to 10 widgets.
  6. Tap Done when you finish arranging the screen.

Smart Stacks and custom widget stacks require iOS 14 or later. Check Apple’s widget instructions for the controls available on your version.

How to arrange apps and Home Screen pages

Apps and widgets can be arranged to frame a wallpaper subject or aligned along the side or bottom of the screen. Separate Home Screen pages can have different layouts, so you can keep a decorative first page and a more practical page for other apps. Apple’s guide to moving apps and widgets covers Home Screen placement.

  1. Decide which apps need to be immediately visible.
  2. Place widgets and frequently used apps around the wallpaper’s focal point.
  3. Move less-used apps to another Home Screen page if you want a cleaner first page.
  4. Check that important app names remain visible and recognizable, especially if you use large icons.

Common problems and fixes

  • The widget size I want is missing: apps do not necessarily offer every size. Check the widget gallery for the options available.
  • The custom image does not appear as expected: review the shortcut’s Home Screen setup and select the image again.
  • The wallpaper does not line up: adjust the crop and reposition icons or widgets around its focal point.
  • The theme is unreadable: simplify the wallpaper, increase contrast, or try another native icon appearance.
  • I cannot find an app after changing the layout: check your other Home Screen pages and the App Library.
  • Large icons make apps hard to identify: switch back to a size that displays app names, or use a simpler layout.
  • A control or appearance is missing: check your iOS version and device, since availability varies.

Best setup by reader type

  • Quickest setup: keep native icons, choose a coordinated wallpaper, and add one useful widget.
  • Minimalist: use a plain wallpaper, one small Clock or Calendar widget, and only the apps you use most.
  • Maximum visual control: prepare custom image files and add shortcuts selectively.
  • Productivity: use a useful Calendar or Reminders widget and keep essential apps in convenient positions.
  • Low maintenance: use native appearance controls and avoid rebuilding every app icon.
  • No custom artwork: use Apple’s icon appearance options, widgets, wallpaper, and Home Screen page layouts.

The simplest design process that usually works

  1. Pick one wallpaper.
  2. Choose a restrained palette.
  3. Add one useful widget.
  4. Try native icon styling first.
  5. Use custom-image shortcuts only for icons that need individual artwork.
  6. Arrange apps to frame the wallpaper while keeping essential apps easy to reach.
  7. Use the layout for a while before adding more decoration.

This approach preserves the visual character of the iOS 14 aesthetic while keeping the Home Screen readable and practical.

FAQ

Can I still make an iOS 14-style Home Screen on newer iOS?

Yes. Use a coordinated wallpaper, widgets, intentional placement, and either native icon appearance controls or custom-image shortcuts. The exact controls depend on your iOS version and device.

Can I use a custom picture for an iPhone app icon?

You can add a shortcut to the Home Screen and choose a photo or file as its image. It is a shortcut, not a replacement for the app’s underlying system icon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move widgets and apps around the wallpaper?

Apple’s iOS 18 release notes describe placing icons and widgets in open Home Screen positions, including along the side or bottom. Check your iPhone for the placement options available to you.

Why does my widget not offer the size I want?

Not every app offers every widget size. Choose from the sizes shown for that widget in the Home Screen widget gallery.

How many widgets can go in a stack?

Apple says a widget stack can hold up to 10 widgets. Smart Stacks and custom widget stacks require iOS 14 or later.
