Keep a formal dining room when your household regularly uses it for shared meals, guests, celebrations, or another purpose that matters. If the room sits empty most of the year, its floor area may work harder as a flex room, office, bedroom, or expanded kitchen. The decision is personal rather than a simple trend verdict: having a dining room and using one are separate questions.
What a formal dining room has to earn
A separate dining room consumes valuable, enclosed floor area. In return, it can provide a place where meals feel deliberate, guests can sit together, dishes can remain set between courses, and the kitchen stays visually separate. It may also support traditions such as holiday dinners, homework, card games, or family meetings.

It does need a pattern of use that your household recognizes as valuable. A room used for six major gatherings a year may be justified in one home; in another, that same room may be the best location for a daily home office or an extra bedroom.
Ask two different questions:
- Do you have the space? Consider the room’s footprint, furniture, circulation, storage, and the opportunity cost of those square feet.
- Do you use the space? Count ordinary meals, guests, celebrations, projects, and other recurring activities rather than relying on how the room was labeled on the plan.
If the answer to the second question is usually no, do not preserve the room solely because a formal dining room sounds desirable. If the room is the setting for the occasions your household cares about, keeping it can be a rational choice even when broader design commentary says the category is declining.

What current U.S. evidence actually shows
Available evidence points in several directions, but the measures are not interchangeable and none directly tells us how often an average household eats in its formal dining room.
Preferences are divided
The 2023 New Home Trends Institute survey, conducted with John Burns Research & Consulting and based on 1,308 homeowners and renters, found that 44% considered a formal dining room very or somewhat important. Meanwhile, 33% considered it somewhat or very unimportant. Those figures describe stated preference, not observed room use. The remaining respondents fall outside those two grouped answers, so the results should not be treated as a simple vote for or against dining rooms.
Kitchen expansions sometimes take dining-room space
In Houzz’s 2025 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, 29% of homeowners who were expanding their kitchens cited the dining room as a source of expansion space. This is a renovation-context figure among kitchen-expansion participants, not 29% of all households removing their dining rooms. It indicates that some owners value additional kitchen area more than the existing separation, while saying nothing about homes that retain both spaces.
Designers report a shift in new communities
Axios reported in August 2025 that nearly 80% of designers working on new-home communities said dining rooms had become less important over the preceding year. The report available for this claim does not expose the underlying survey methodology, sample size, or question wording. Treat it as an indicator of professional design sentiment, not a nationally representative measure of household behavior.
Listing language has changed
Zillow Research found that mentions of open-concept layouts in listings more than doubled since 2015, while mentions of formal dining rooms dipped slightly. Listing descriptions reflect marketing language and the features agents choose to highlight. They do not establish how many rooms homes contain or how owners use them after moving in.

The broader trade-off
Stephen Smith, executive director of the Center for Building in North America, told The Atlantic: “It’s not that Americans don’t want dining rooms. It’s that they want something else, and that takes up space.” In context, the observation describes a competition for limited floor area. It is not a claim that every household prefers an open plan or has stopped valuing a dedicated dining setting.

Why these findings cannot answer your household’s question
A survey can measure what people say is important. A renovation study can show which rooms are altered when a kitchen grows. A listing analysis can show how often certain phrases appear. A designer survey can signal what professionals are specifying. None of those measures records the number of meals your family eats at a dining table each month.
No recent representative measure identified for this question establishes formal-dining-room use frequency, and there is no direct outcome comparison showing that a formal room, an eat-in kitchen, or an open-plan dining area produces better household results. Current evidence is dominated by the United States, so it should not automatically be generalized to other countries, housing traditions, or apartment types.
Use the statistics to understand the range of preferences, not to outsource your decision. Your own calendar, floor plan, and competing needs are more relevant to the final choice.
A decision framework: five questions to score before changing the room
1. How often do shared meals happen there?
Review the last three months rather than imagining an ideal future. Note weekday dinners, weekend meals, holidays, birthdays, and meals with visitors. Include occasions that would be materially less comfortable elsewhere. A room that hosts a full family dinner every Sunday has a different case from one opened only on a single holiday.

2. What is your hosting style and guest count?
Some households host seated meals for eight or twelve people; others prefer buffet service, outdoor gatherings, or casual meals around a kitchen island. Measure the table length, chair clearance, serving path, and route to the kitchen. If guests routinely overflow into other rooms, a formal room may still be useful as an anchor, but it may not need to remain a fully separate, traditional space.
3. Does separation make serving and clearing easier?
Distance from the kitchen can be either a benefit or an annoyance. A nearby dining area may reduce carrying and make it easier to supervise children. A separate room can hide preparation mess, allow a table to stay set, and reduce noise during a long meal. Walk the actual route with a loaded tray before deciding that one arrangement is more convenient.
4. Does the household need a quiet, separate area?
Compare the dining room with your other unmet needs: a desk that can close behind a door, a guest room, a playroom, a study area, accessible storage, or a place for hobbies. A flex room may solve a daily problem that a rarely used dining room does not.
5. What would the alternative use be worth?
Do not compare a real dining room with a vague promise that the space could be useful. Define the alternative: a 10-by-12-foot office with a door, a larger kitchen work zone, a bedroom that avoids a future move, or storage that removes clutter from several rooms. Estimate how often that alternative would be used and what it would replace.
Formal dining room, eat-in kitchen, open plan, or flex room?
The following comparison is a practical planning tool, not a ranking derived from a national study. It helps you identify which trade-off matches your routines.

| Layout | Best fit when | Main advantage | Common compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate formal dining room | Seated meals and hosting are recurring priorities | Clear atmosphere, privacy, and room for a set table | Dedicated square footage may sit unused |
| Eat-in kitchen | Most meals are casual and quick access matters | Short serving and clearing route; easy everyday supervision | Less separation from cooking, dishes, and noise |
| Open-plan dining area | You want one connected social zone | Flexible sightlines and conversational flow | Cooking activity and visual clutter remain part of the meal |
| Flex room | A workspace, guest room, hobby area, or playroom has higher daily value | One room can support multiple needs | Furniture must be movable or shared, and formal hosting may require setup |
There is no universal winner. A household that entertains often may prefer separation; a household that works from home may reasonably prioritize a door and quiet. The right answer can also change when children grow, work arrangements change, or mobility needs develop.
Test the decision before removing walls or buying furniture
- Track use for 30 days. Mark every meal, guest visit, project, or event that uses the room. Record whether the room’s separation made the activity better.
- Measure the real footprint. Include table leaves, chairs pulled out, sideboards, door swings, and a comfortable walking path. A room that technically fits furniture may fail in daily circulation.
- Run a temporary flex trial. Move a small desk, craft table, or storage unit into the room for two to four weeks. Keep the dining table available if possible, or use a folding table for one planned meal. Notice which arrangement gets used without prompting.
- Simulate a hosted meal. Set the table for your usual guest count, carry serving dishes from the kitchen, and clear them afterward. Time and observe bottlenecks instead of relying on a floor-plan impression.
- Price the alternative accurately. Include electrical work, lighting, heating and cooling, doors, flooring repairs, paint, storage, and permits where applicable. A conversion that looks inexpensive on paper can become costly once the room must support a different function.
- Choose a reversible first step. Before structural work, try a smaller table, closed storage, portable lighting, or a work surface that can be removed for holidays. Reversibility protects you from making a permanent change based on a short-lived routine.
If you keep the dining room, make regular use easier
Design around the meals you actually host
Choose a table size that fits ordinary days, not only the largest celebration. Leaves, stackable chairs, or a nearby folding table can expand capacity without forcing every day to feel like an event. Keep serving pieces where they can be reached without crossing the entire house.
Remove the ceremony that prevents use
If setting a formal table feels like work, simplify it. Use durable everyday place settings, a washable centerpiece, and lighting that can shift from bright family meals to a quieter dinner. The goal is not to make every meal formal; it is to make the room convenient enough that formality is optional.
Use the room between meals without losing its identity
A dining room can hold homework, board games, gift wrapping, or a temporary project. Protect the table with a removable mat, provide a nearby basket for supplies, and establish a quick reset routine. Multipurpose use succeeds when the room can return to dining in minutes rather than hours.
Paint for the room’s traffic and light
Paint cannot create a reason to use an empty room, but it can remove practical friction. Sample colors in morning, afternoon, and evening light before committing. For a high-traffic dining room, select a washable finish suitable for the wall surface and allow the coating to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before washing it. A darker color can make a large room feel more intimate; a lighter, reflective color can help a small or dim room feel less enclosed. Test samples behind the table and near the doorway, where artificial and natural light often differ.

Protect the surfaces that receive abuse
Chair backs, corners, and the wall beside the serving route are common scuff points. Repair loose paint, clean the surface, prime stains or patched areas, and use painter’s tape only on sound, cured surfaces. If the room is being converted to a workspace or play area, plan for additional impact and cleanability rather than treating it like a low-use decorative room.
If you repurpose it, preserve occasional hosting capacity
A conversion does not have to be all or nothing. A desk on locking casters, a narrow console that doubles as a buffet, or storage that closes can keep the room available for occasional meals. Keep a measured plan for the table and chair layout so that holiday setup is a known task rather than an annual puzzle.
When the new use is an office, prioritize acoustics, outlets, task lighting, and a door that can close. For a guest room, verify egress, heating, privacy, and local code requirements before treating a temporary arrangement as a legal bedroom. For kitchen expansion, determine whether the wall, flooring, plumbing, electrical circuits, ventilation, and structural elements can support the change; a dining room’s location alone does not make it an easy kitchen addition.
Some reported design directions replace dining rooms with multipurpose rooms such as offices or bedrooms. That is a direction designers have observed, not proof that one repurposing choice works best for every home. Choose the use that solves a need you can name and expect to continue.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a trend with a requirement. Open-plan listings or designer preferences do not tell you how your family eats.
- Counting only special occasions. Include setup time, storage, daily meals, and cleanup when estimating value.
- Ignoring circulation. A table that fits on a drawing may block doors, heating registers, or the path between kitchen and living areas.
- Making a permanent change after a temporary life stage. A remote-work period, a new baby, or a renovation can distort a year’s usage pattern. Recheck the decision when routines stabilize.
- Assuming paint will solve a layout problem. Color and finish improve comfort and maintenance, but they cannot replace missing storage, poor lighting, or an impractical serving route.
- Leaving the alternative undefined. If you remove the dining room, decide exactly where meals, guests, storage, and projects will go before demolition begins.
A simple verdict you can apply today
Keep the formal dining room if it supports recurring meals, hosting, or another valued activity and the household can afford its space. Adapt it if the room matters occasionally but spends too much time idle. Repurpose it when a clearly defined daily need would be better served there and you can preserve a workable plan for the meals you still host.
The evidence shows a divided public preference, some kitchen renovations taking dining-room area, and a design vocabulary that increasingly emphasizes open or multipurpose space. Those signals explain why the question is current; they do not decide it for you. Your use log, guest pattern, serving route, and best alternative are the evidence that should determine what happens in your home.
