Yes. Blender is free, open-source software, and you can use its core desktop features offline once you have downloaded it. Modeling, sculpting, animation, local rendering, compositing, video editing, and work with files stored on your computer do not need a live internet connection. You will need a connection to download Blender and updates, and potentially for online assets, cloud services, or particular add-ons.
The key caveat: Blender’s offline setting cannot guarantee that every third-party add-on stays offline. If you are setting up a disconnected computer, prepare and test the exact version, add-ons, and project files before you rely on them.
Is Blender really free?
The Blender application is free to download and use, and it is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). “Free” here means both no purchase or subscription is required for the core software and that the license provides freedoms to use, study, modify, and redistribute it. Blender’s official site describes it as free and open source.
Recommended Free Tools
You can use Blender for personal, educational, freelance, and commercial work. The GPL applies to Blender itself; it does not automatically set the license for artwork you create with it. Models, textures, fonts, HDRIs, add-ons, and other materials you bring into a project may have their own terms. Check those terms, especially before distributing or selling work.

Paid add-ons, asset libraries, training, cloud rendering, and other services are optional parts of the broader Blender ecosystem. They are not required to download or use the core desktop application. A Blender Studio subscription, for example, is separate from the free software and provides training, assets, films, and production knowledge.
Does Blender work without internet?
Yes. Blender’s desktop application can launch and perform core creative work offline after installation or extraction. The application does not need a subscription activation check to do ordinary local work. The project’s requirements page says Blender can run without an internet connection, including from a folder or USB drive.
| Generally works offline (with files already local) | May require internet or advance preparation |
|---|---|
| Modeling, sculpting, UV editing, rigging, animation, and Geometry Nodes | Downloading Blender, updates, or another version |
| Texturing with local images, Grease Pencil, compositing, and video editing | Browsing or installing extensions from an online repository |
| Rendering with Eevee or Cycles on the local machine | Downloading models, textures, HDRIs, fonts, or other assets |
Python scripting and opening or saving local .blend files |
Blender Studio content, cloud rendering, online collaboration, or file synchronization |
| Locally installed add-ons that do not depend on remote services | Third-party add-ons with online license checks, downloads, or remote dependencies |
Blender’s production documentation says it normally does not access the internet by default, though online access can be enabled. An add-on can have its own network behavior, licensing requirements, or remote dependencies, so do not assume an add-on will work offline just because Blender does.

How to prepare Blender for offline use
- Download Blender from the official download page before disconnecting. Choose the build for your operating system and processor architecture.
- Choose an installation type. Use an installer for a conventional setup, or download a portable archive if you want to extract Blender to a folder or USB drive. Available formats vary by operating system and release.
- Install or extract the program while online. Keep the installer or archive so you can restore the same version later. Blender’s deployment documentation explains that self-contained installations can be kept in separate directories, allowing multiple versions to coexist.
- Gather everything the project needs. Download add-ons and their dependencies, asset libraries, textures, HDRIs, fonts, reference images, and any project-specific files. Save them locally and note where they are stored.
- Test the complete setup while disconnected. Launch Blender, enable each required add-on, open a representative project, confirm that textures and fonts resolve, and render a test frame.
- Keep the project’s version consistent. Record the Blender version used and keep its installer or archive. Test a new version and its add-ons before using it on the only copy of a project.
For a portable setup, test it on the actual target computer. Portability does not bundle graphics drivers, guarantee that preferences and asset paths travel with the executable, or make every add-on portable. A slow USB drive can also make loading projects and assets less comfortable.
How to restrict Blender’s online access
For supported versions, you can start Blender with this command-line option:
blender --offline-mode
Blender’s documentation says this prevents users from enabling online access in Blender’s preferences. In Blender 4.5, the preference is labeled Allow Online Access under Preferences → System → Network; menu placement or wording may change in later versions.

This setting is not a firewall. Blender warns that it cannot stop a third-party add-on from trying to connect on its own. If the requirement is security or guaranteed network isolation, use operating-system or network-level controls as well, and only install add-ons you trust.
Hardware still matters offline
Offline use does not mean Blender will run well on every computer. The figures below are the minimums and recommendations listed on Blender’s official requirements page; check that page when choosing a build because requirements can change.
| Platform | Minimum listed | Recommended listed |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 8.1, 64-bit; 4-core CPU with SSE4.2; 8 GB RAM; GPU with 2 GB VRAM; OpenGL 4.3 | Windows 10 or 11; 8-core CPU; 32 GB RAM |
| macOS | macOS 11.2 Big Sur; Apple Silicon or Intel CPU; 8 GB RAM; Metal 2.2-compatible GPU | See the official requirements page for current platform-specific guidance |
| Linux | 64-bit distribution with glibc 2.28 or newer; 4-core CPU with SSE4.2; 8 GB RAM; GPU with 2 GB VRAM; OpenGL 4.3 | 8-core CPU; 32 GB RAM |
The same requirements page recommends a 1,920 × 1,080 display and a three-button mouse, while noting a two-button mouse or trackpad can work. Minimum specifications are not a promise that complex scenes, high-resolution sculpting, simulations, or GPU rendering will feel fast. Cycles GPU rendering has additional requirements, and the correct graphics drivers matter even on a disconnected computer. Download needed drivers in advance if the machine cannot get online.

Choose the download that matches both your operating system and architecture. Windows x64 and Windows ARM builds are not interchangeable in every respect; macOS Apple Silicon and Intel builds also differ, as do Linux package formats. The official requirements page identifies x64 and arm64 support, but the specific options depend on the release.

An add-on fails to load or asks for a license
It may not have been installed locally, may not support your Blender version, or may need a license check, dependency download, or remote asset library. Check the add-on’s own documentation for offline activation and version compatibility. If you can reconnect safely, obtain its dependencies and test it online first, then disconnect and test again. Blender cannot guarantee a third-party add-on will honor Blender’s offline setting.

This is usually a file-path or packaging issue, not a requirement for Blender itself to connect to the internet. Keep external files on the computer, use appropriate relative paths, and consider packing files into the .blend file when that suits the project. For transfer, keep a project archive containing the blend file, textures, caches, fonts, and other necessary assets, then test it on a disconnected machine.

A portable copy fails on another computer
The destination machine may have incompatible or missing graphics drivers, a different CPU architecture, an unsupported operating system, insufficient memory, or security restrictions. A portable copy avoids a conventional installation; it does not remove those system requirements. Test on the target machine before depending on the setup.
Blender cannot update itself offline
That is expected. Download the newer installer or archive on a connected computer, transfer it to the offline one, then install or extract it. Keep the existing version until the replacement and required add-ons have been tested. Blender versions can coexist, which is useful when a project depends on a particular release.
Is Blender a good choice for offline work?
Blender is a strong fit if you need capable 3D software for a student laptop, travel, a school lab, a studio workstation, or an air-gapped environment. Its core features are local, and you can preserve a specific version instead of relying on automatic updates. That makes it practical for limited or unreliable internet—provided you prepare files and dependencies first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is less convenient if you expect instant access to online assets, cloud rendering, synchronized files, or extensions you have not yet downloaded. Beginners should also distinguish the software from the services and content around it: Blender can be free and offline while a chosen course, asset, add-on, or render service is paid or online-dependent.
If a computer is too old for a current release, Blender keeps previous versions available. Older releases may support older graphics APIs—Blender lists 3.6 as an OpenGL 3.3 example and 2.79 as an OpenGL 2.1 example—but using an obsolete version can mean missing features, fixes, extension compatibility, and compatibility with files made in newer releases. Use an older build only when its trade-offs are acceptable, and keep it isolated from important current work.
