Chrome is often called a color, but it is more accurately a metallic appearance than one fixed, flat hue. Chromium metal is silvery to silver-gray; polished chrome looks brighter or darker as the light, viewing angle, and reflections change.

What color is chrome?
Chromium, the metal, is silvery with a slight blue tinge. The Royal Society of Chemistry describes it as “a hard, silvery metal with a blue tinge,” while the U.S. Geological Survey describes it as steely-gray and lustrous, noting that it takes a high polish. Those descriptions establish a useful general hue, not one universal color value for every chrome surface.

Plating can give steel a polished mirror finish, but what you see also depends on the underlying object and on how its surface reflects light. Is chrome a color or a finish?
Both descriptions can make sense, depending on what you mean. In ordinary language, “chrome” can name a metallic color or appearance. Technically, however, a polished-metal look is not simply a flat patch of silver paint: its brightness changes with the angle of the light and the viewing angle.
ISO/IEC 17823:2024 defines metallic colour as “colour associated with polished metal, the brightness of which varies with the angle of the incident light and the viewing angle.” The standard also notes that metallic colour typically cannot be reproduced well by mixing device process colours. A flat digital swatch can suggest silver, but it cannot fully convey the changing highlights and reflections of a polished surface. See ISO/IEC 17823:2024, entry 3.6.4.

Why does chrome look different in different light?
A polished chrome surface reflects light and its surroundings. As the light source, object, or viewer moves, some areas can catch bright highlights while others show darker reflections. That shifting brightness is part of the metallic appearance, not evidence that chrome has changed into a different fixed hue.

For coatings, appearance can be studied by measuring reflectance with or without the specular contribution—the reflected component associated with a surface’s mirror-like behavior. Such measurements help analyze appearance, but a single value cannot stand in for every lighting and viewing condition. Is chrome the same as silver paint?
No. Silver paint can evoke a silvery color, but a flat swatch does not reproduce the angle-dependent highlights and reflections that define a polished-metal appearance. If you need to represent chrome in a painting or digital design, a single silver-gray tone is a starting point, not the whole effect: the impression of polished metal relies on contrasts between bright reflections and darker areas. The exact result depends on the surface and viewing conditions, so there is no one hex or RGB value that describes every chrome object.

No. The silvery appearance belongs to chromium metal; chromium-containing compounds can have very different colors. The Royal Society of Chemistry lists chromium compounds in green, yellow, red, orange, blue, and violet, and identifies chrome yellow as a compound rather than the appearance of elemental chromium. The element’s name reflects the colors of its compounds, not the color of the metal itself.

The RSC dates chromium’s discovery by Nicolas Louis Vauquelin to 1798. Its account notes that the name was debated because the metal itself had no characteristic color, despite the striking colors of its compounds. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s chromium entry gives the element’s history and appearance.
