Yes: UltiMaker Cura’s standard desktop slicer is free to download and use, with no purchase or subscription required for local slicing. The qualification is that Cura-related cloud, collaboration, printer-management and business services have separate limits or paid plans. So Cura itself is free; the wider UltiMaker ecosystem is not unlimited and universally free.
What you get with free Cura
UltiMaker Cura is a slicer: it turns a 3D model into instructions—usually G-code—that a compatible printer can follow. You choose a printer and material profile, then set options such as layer height, speed, infill and supports. Cura prepares the file; it does not provide the printer, filament or a guarantee that a print will succeed.

For ordinary local use, the practical answer is straightforward: you can install Cura, prepare a model, and export printer instructions without buying a Cura license or subscribing to a plan.
“Cura” can mean more than one thing
The free desktop slicer is only one part of UltiMaker’s product ecosystem. The names are related, but the products and their limits differ.

Downloading desktop Cura should not be confused with signing up for cloud services. Conversely, “Cura is free” does not mean every account-based, team or enterprise feature is included in the desktop download.

What does Digital Factory’s free plan include?
UltiMaker’s Digital Factory page advertised a tier labeled Free Pro with one printer, one user, two projects, Cura Cloud slicing, up to 20 files per project and print-job history limited to 20 jobs. These are service allowances, not restrictions on how many files you can slice locally in desktop Cura.
The same page displayed Studio at €700 or $800 and Business at €2,500 or $2,800 when checked for this article. Those displayed figures are not a reliable quote for every buyer: confirm the current billing period, taxes, region and plan terms directly on the Digital Factory plans page. A home user who only slices locally may not need Digital Factory at all.
Do you need an UltiMaker printer?
No. Cura is closely integrated with UltiMaker printers and materials, but the software can also be used with many third-party printers when an appropriate profile is available. The Cura project repository describes community-managed printer profiles, and the Marketplace offers additional profiles and plugins.

Compatibility is not a promise that every printer has an equally complete or reliable setup. Some models need a manufacturer-provided profile, a community profile or manual configuration. A generic or outdated profile can use incorrect dimensions, temperatures, retraction, start or end G-code, or bed behavior. Confirm the profile against the printer maker’s instructions, and review the generated settings and G-code before sending a file—especially after changing profiles or scripts. Network printing and remote controls may also depend on the printer, firmware, plugin or cloud service.
Is Cura open source—and can you use it commercially?
The Cura repository identifies the software as licensed under LGPL-3.0; the license file sets out the applicable terms. That is different from simply being free of charge: open-source licensing grants defined rights to use, modify and redistribute covered code subject to the license’s conditions.
The license for Cura’s code does not automatically apply to everything associated with the Cura or UltiMaker names. Trademarks, website content, cloud services, third-party plugins, bundled components and downloaded 3D models may have their own terms.

For many users, selling an object they printed is a different question from redistributing modified Cura software. But the right to print and sell a design depends on the model’s license and other applicable rights. Businesses should also check third-party component and plugin terms, respect trademarks, and get legal advice before redistributing modified Cura or bundling it into a commercial product. Do not imply UltiMaker endorses a product or business without authorization.

A free slicer removes one software purchase from the workflow, not the costs of 3D printing. Budget separately for:
- The printer and any required accessories
- Filament or resin, plus nozzles, build surfaces and other consumables
- Electricity, maintenance and replacement parts
- Failed prints and time spent calibrating or troubleshooting
- Paid models or commercial licenses for designs
- Optional cloud upgrades, fleet management, support, training or enterprise administration
Print quality depends on the machine, material, profile, calibration and model—not on Cura’s price. Plugins can have separate terms or requirements, and an update to Cura can make a plugin incompatible. Treat cloud storage and print history as plan-dependent; do not assume a cloud workflow is suitable for confidential designs.

How to download Cura safely
- Start at the official UltiMaker Cura download page, or use the official GitHub releases.
- Choose the installer for your operating system and check the release notes for version and system requirements.
- Avoid third-party download portals and unofficial “Cura premium” offers. There is no paid desktop license required for standard Cura slicing.
- Install a profile that matches your exact printer and material. Before printing, verify bed dimensions, temperature limits and start/end behavior against the printer manufacturer’s guidance.
Using an official download source is a sensible precaution, not a guarantee about every plugin, old installer or file found elsewhere. Check the current release information rather than relying on a version number quoted in an older guide.
Is Cura the best free slicer?
There is no universal winner. Cura is a strong choice if your printer has a dependable Cura profile and you value its broad settings and plugin ecosystem. If your printer maker maintains a better profile or workflow in another slicer, that support may matter more than the application’s price.
PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer are also presented by their projects as free, open-source alternatives. Compare printer support, profile quality, calibration tools, integrations and whether the workflow runs locally or relies on a separate cloud service. Check the license and terms for the specific software and add-ons you choose.
