Essastone engineered stone is no longer a current Laminex product. Laminex identifies the range as discontinued in 2024, so a new renovation should not be planned around finding fresh Essastone slabs. Existing benchtops remain a practical homeowner concern, but work on them sits within Australia’s engineered-stone restrictions and should be handled by qualified professionals.

What Essastone was
Essastone was an engineered-stone surface marketed and distributed in Australia by Laminex Group Pty Limited, trading as Laminex. Laminex documents describe it for interior residential and commercial use, while an older fabrication manual describes the material as engineered quartz. Those documents are historical product information; they are not evidence that the range can still be ordered or fabricated today.
The brand appeared in benchtop and interior-surface specifications because engineered stone offered a factory-finished slab with a stone-like appearance for kitchens, bathrooms and commercial interiors. A product’s former popularity does not change its current status: the current Laminex information states that Essastone engineered stone was discontinued in 2024.

Is Essastone still available?
For a new Australian project, treat Essastone as discontinued. Laminex’s current silica-free-benchtops information explicitly labels the discontinuation as occurring in 2024. It does not establish whether a particular distributor, fabricator or showroom has residual stock in a specific location, so a local listing should not be interpreted as ongoing manufacturer availability.

Consequently, searching for a replacement Essastone slab is not an appropriate procurement plan even if an old sample, photograph or catalogue page remains online.

What Australia’s engineered-stone prohibition covers
Safe Work Australia defines engineered stone for this prohibition as an artificial hardened product that combines natural stone materials with other constituents and contains at least 1% crystalline silica by weight. The offence applies to a person conducting a business or undertaking that carries out, directs or allows covered manufacture, supply, processing or installation.
That wording is narrower than saying that every stone surface is illegal. The ban is directed at covered engineered-stone products and activities. It also does not mean that every possible task on an existing installation is prohibited. Safe Work Australia describes limited permitted legacy work for removal, repair, minor modification or disposal, with notification and controlled-processing obligations. Jurisdictional details can vary, so the responsible business must confirm the current requirements with its state or territory work-health-and-safety regulator.

Homeowners should not cut, drill, grind, polish, trim or remove an Essastone slab themselves. Dust generated by processing silica-containing products can create a serious occupational-health hazard, and the legal duties attach to the businesses directing or performing the work. Ask a qualified local fabricator or removal contractor how it will identify the material, control dust, notify the regulator when required, transport waste and document completion.
What can replace Essastone?
Laminex’s current silica-free-benchtops page lists three broad categories:
- Thin laminate: described by Laminex as an Australian-made option.
- Compact laminate: described as a self-supporting panel.
- HI-MACS solid surface: described as a non-porous solid surface that can be shaped and repaired if scratched or chipped.
These are categories, not a ranked recommendation. The available information does not provide a like-for-like cost study, performance test or application-specific suitability comparison. A designer or fabricator should confirm the current local range, thicknesses, edge details, colours, installation method, maintenance instructions and warranty before selecting one.
How to compare the categories for your project
- Confirm availability in your area. Ask a local supplier which current ranges can actually be ordered and what lead times apply.
- Match the application. Explain whether the surface is for a kitchen, laundry, bathroom, office, hospitality fit-out or another interior setting.
- Check construction and detailing. Compare panel thickness, substrate or support requirements, sink and cooktop cut-outs, joins, splashbacks and edge profiles.
- Review care and repair. Obtain the manufacturer’s current cleaning guidance and ask how scratches, chips, stains or damaged joins are addressed.
- Read the warranty. Confirm who provides it, what installation conditions apply, what evidence is required and whether commercial use is included.
- Set the budget only after specification. The reviewed Laminex information does not establish comparative prices, so obtain written, project-specific quotes.
- Check composition and compliance. If avoiding crystalline silica is a project requirement, request current documentation identifying the product’s composition and any relevant safety information.
A silica-free label addresses one hazard, not every design or maintenance question. Safe Work Australia notes that processing other stone materials still requires risk management. Your contractor remains responsible for selecting safe work methods for the specific material.

Can an existing Essastone benchtop be repaired or removed?
Potentially, but the answer depends on the task, the material’s condition and the rules in your jurisdiction. Legacy work can include removal, repair, minor modification or disposal when the controlled-work requirements are met. That does not authorize an unqualified person to perform fabrication in a garage or on a renovation site.
Before arranging work
- Photograph the installation and note its location, approximate age, colour and any visible damage without disturbing the surface.
- Locate invoices, the original fabricator’s details, warranty documents and renovation records.
- Describe the intended job precisely: for example, replacing a sink, repairing a chip, removing the whole top or disposing of a demolished slab.
- Ask the contractor how it will comply with notification, dust-control, worker-protection and waste-disposal requirements.
- Confirm which state or territory regulator’s rules apply to the property and obtain any required written confirmation before work begins.
Why a small modification is not automatically harmless
A cut-out, edge adjustment or drilled opening is still processing. The size of the job does not by itself remove the safety obligations. A contractor may need a controlled process even when the requested change appears minor. Do not accept advice that treats wet cutting, a household vacuum or an outdoor location as a complete substitute for a compliant control plan.
How the Essastone warranty works
Laminex’s reviewed 15-year warranty document is specifically titled for the Premium, Luxury and Ultra ranges. It carries a 10/22 document footer and says coverage applies to specified Essastone colours from the range introduced on 1 October 2022, purchased from Laminex after that date, for interior residential or commercial use in Australia, subject to the document’s other conditions.
Under those terms, Laminex may repair or replace a product that fails directly because of a manufacturing or material defect during the first 15 years after installation. That is not a universal promise for every Essastone installation: Laminex’s technical-library listings also include a separate 10-year warranty for Standard and Deluxe ranges.

Common warranty limits
The 15-year document excludes or limits claims involving thermal damage, outdoor use, inappropriate cleaning or maintenance, failure to follow fabrication or installation procedures, and damage or variation associated with use and material characteristics. It also excludes modifications to the factory-finished surface, including repolishing, repairing, filling, sealing or reworking. Proof of purchase and compliance with the document’s notification timing are required.

A claim should describe the defect, installation date, purchaser, location and requested remedy; do not sand, seal or otherwise alter the surface before the claim is assessed.

Laminex’s technical library still indexes historical Essastone materials, including a Care & Maintenance Card issued on 31 October 2020 and older warranty documents. Their presence in a document library is an archive function, not confirmation that Essastone remains on sale.
Historical care instructions can help identify ordinary cleaning expectations for an installed surface, but they should not be read as permission to undertake fabrication. If a stain, chip or heat mark is beyond routine cleaning, stop experimenting with abrasive pads, solvents, polishing compounds or sealers. Such modifications can fall within warranty exclusions and may create a regulated processing task.

A practical decision path for homeowners
- New build or renovation: remove Essastone from the specification and ask for current silica-free options suited to the application.
- Existing surface in good condition: keep using it according to the applicable care guidance; do not alter it solely because the product has been discontinued.
- Cosmetic problem: document the issue, check the warranty and obtain a professional assessment before attempting treatment.

Bottom line for an Essastone owner
Essastone is a discontinued Laminex engineered-stone range, not a current product to specify for a new Australian benchtop. Existing installations can remain in place, and narrowly defined legacy removal or repair may be possible, but processing must be planned and performed under the applicable work-health-and-safety rules. Check the exact range and paperwork before relying on a warranty, and choose a current alternative only after confirming its local availability, construction, care requirements and documented composition.
