Polaroid film contains active developing chemicals, including alkali, but the chemistry is held inside the film during normal use. The clearest manufacturer warning is specific to 8×10 film: paste that leaks from a photo’s edges is caustic and should not touch skin, eyes, or mouth. Polaroid does not quantify the risk from routine handling of intact film.
What is inside Polaroid film?
Each picture has a light-sensitive negative, a transparent cover sheet, and a thin foil reagent pod. Polaroid says the cover sheet keeps the chemicals inside; as the picture is ejected, camera rollers rupture the pod and spread its contents through the image layers. The developing reagent includes alkali, white pigment, opacifying dyes, water, polymeric thickener, and other photographically active materials. Polaroid’s explanation of the process was updated March 26, 2020, and its film-component explanation is dated October 29, 2024.
Is ordinary handling of an intact photo dangerous?
The available manufacturer information describes chemicals contained within the film and identifies escaped paste as the contact hazard. It does not establish that ordinary handling of intact film causes poisoning or chemical absorption, and it does not quantify exposure risk. This distinction matters: the presence of active chemistry does not, by itself, show that an intact photo is harmful to handle as directed.

What if paste leaks from a photo?
Polaroid’s explicit warning located here applies to 8×10 film. The company calls leaked paste “a caustic substance” and says to avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mouth. If contact occurs, wipe the paste off immediately, flush the area with fresh water, and consult a doctor.

- Wipe any leaked paste with a moist tissue.
- Keep paste and discarded materials away from children, animals, clothing, and furniture.
These are the manufacturer’s format-specific instructions; they should not be recast as proof that every Polaroid format has the same formula or carries the same stated warning.
How should the 1998 safety sheet be interpreted?
A 1998 Polaroid Corporation material safety data sheet for developer fluid contained in film pods identifies alkali and warns that eye contact may cause permanent eye damage, while skin or mouth contact may cause irritation or burns. It includes first-aid precautions. The document is hosted by University of Wisconsin–Whitewater Risk Management, but it is historical and should not be treated as a current safety data sheet for every Polaroid film format. Does the warning apply to i-Type film?
Polaroid’s current Color i-Type product listing describes an eight-photo, battery-free pack and gives a 10–15 minute development time. Those are product details, not toxicology findings. The explicit edge-paste warning cited here concerns 8×10 film, and the available sources do not establish one identical formulation or risk profile across formats. Check that film is compatible with your camera; compatibility information is not a safety rating.
What is known—and not known—about toxicity?
Polaroid documents active developing chemistry and gives a direct caustic-paste warning for 8×10 photos. The cited material does not quantify the likelihood of exposure or injury in ordinary use, and it does not provide a current, format-by-format comparison of toxicity. There is therefore no sound basis here to rank Polaroid formats by toxicity or to call all intact Polaroid photos poisonous.
