The DMF RL3000 may suit a pharmaceutical airlock when the opening is part of an ISO 7 (Grade C) environment and the selected build meets the facility’s pressure, cleaning, safety and control requirements. Its published maximum speed is 1.5 m/sec, but speed alone does not establish cleanroom suitability. The required classification, leakage performance, room-recovery time, interlock sequence and validation evidence must be defined for the specific installation.

What cleanroom classification is the RL3000 designed for?
DMF’s pharmaceutical cleanroom project information associates the RL3000 with ISO 7, also called Grade C. That is a supplier description of the product’s intended application, not an independent certificate for every RL3000 doorway. Classification applies to the controlled room and its operating state, so the installed door, surrounding construction, air-handling system, cleaning regime and operating procedures all affect the result.
DMF also states that, through its partnership with Efaflex, it can supply and install doors for ISO 6 and ISO 5 conditions. The company cites an AstraZeneca clinical airlock project using custom Efaflex CR Efficient doors that were electrically interlocked and, according to DMF, certified to ISO 6. That project is an example of a different door range and a named customer; it is not evidence that the standard RL3000 or the unspecified installation in this article has ISO 6 or ISO 5 certification.
How to interpret the classification claim
- Use the base RL3000 as a candidate for an ISO 7/Grade C opening only after the facility’s contamination-control team confirms the requirement.
- For ISO 6 or ISO 5, request the exact cleanroom door model, construction, test documentation and certification scope. Do not substitute the RL3000’s ISO 7 association for project-specific evidence.
- Ask whether the classification applies at rest, in operation, or under another defined test condition, and which standard and test method govern acceptance.
- Require the supplier’s current technical submittal for the selected width, height, seals, controls and accessories; the product-page figures are manufacturer specifications accessed in 2026, not independent performance tests.
Is the DMF RL3000 suitable for a pharmaceutical cleanroom airlock?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Suitability depends on where the opening sits in the pressure cascade, the classification of each adjoining space, traffic frequency, the required recovery time after opening, and the way the controls respond to normal and abnormal events. DMF’s own guidance says the opening and its surrounding conditions must be assessed together.

An airlock is a controlled process, not simply two fast doors installed opposite one another. The doors, ventilation, access-control logic, alarms and operating procedures must prevent an unacceptable contamination or pressure excursion. A rapidly closing panel can reduce the open time, but it cannot compensate for an unsuitable pressure differential, inadequate extraction, poor sealing or an interlock sequence that permits both leaves to open.
Questions the project team should answer first
- Boundary: Is the opening inside the cleanroom boundary, between an airlock and a cleanroom, or in a less-controlled transition?
- Classification: What ISO class or Grade applies to each room, and is the requirement for operation, rest, or both?
- Pressure: Which room is positive or negative, what differential is expected across the closed door, and what leakage limit is acceptable?
- Recovery: How quickly must temperature, pressure, particle concentration or other room parameters return to their operating limits after a cycle?
- Traffic: Will the door see operators, carts, pallet trucks, forklifts, or mixed traffic, and how many cycles are expected per hour?
- Hygiene: Which detergents, disinfectants, solvents and wash-down methods will contact the panel, frame and floor seal?
- Safety: What sensing, emergency release, fire-system interface and manual operation are required?
- Evidence: Which factory tests, site acceptance tests, cleanroom qualification tests and validation records are required before release?
Published RL3000 specifications and what they mean
DMF lists the following characteristics for the RL3000. They describe the product as published, not the performance of a particular installed doorway.

DMF does not publish a single performance value for air leakage, pressure retention, particle ingress, sound, cycle life or post-opening recovery in the material available here. Those values must come from the supplier’s current submittal or from the project’s qualification tests.

What is the RL3000-CLN, and when should it be considered?
DMF describes the RL3000-CLN as a cleanroom-oriented variant with a continuous smooth fabric-reinforced PVC panel, additional sealing, stainless-steel side frames and covers, and an RL-PCS controller. DMF lists a speed of 1.5 m/sec and says the controller can integrate with access systems, sensors, interlocks and centralized controls.
These features address common pharmaceutical concerns: fewer dirt traps, more robust cleanable surfaces, improved perimeter sealing and a controller intended to participate in a wider access strategy. They still do not, by themselves, prove an ISO classification. Confirm welds, joints, bottom-edge design, frame penetrations, service access, material certificates and compatibility with the site’s cleaning agents.

Can two high-speed doors be interlocked in a pharma airlock?
Yes, an electrical interlock can be engineered, and DMF reports an airlock project using electrically interlocked doors. The important question is not whether interlocking is possible but whether the programmed sequence matches the contamination-control, life-safety and operations requirements.

Define the normal sequence
- Request: An authorized user or vehicle presents an access credential or activates an approved sensor.
- Eligibility check: The controller confirms that the opposite door is closed, the safety circuit is healthy and no restricted condition is active.
- Open: The requested door opens using the agreed speed and detection settings.
- Passage: Presence sensors or a timed sequence confirm that the person or vehicle has cleared the threshold.
- Close: The door closes only when the safety field is clear and the programmed hold-open conditions have ended.
- Release: The opposite door becomes available only after the closed-position signal, any required delay and the airlock-control conditions are satisfied.
The sequence should include status indication that operators can understand: which door is available, which is locked, whether a cycle is in progress and whether a fault requires intervention. If the site needs event recording, specify what is logged, where it is stored and how records are reviewed.
Specify abnormal conditions before programming
- Emergency egress: Define how occupants leave if access control is unavailable, while preserving life-safety requirements.
- Power loss: Decide whether each door stays closed, opens, stops safely or can be manually released. The safe position may differ between an airlock, production area and loading dock.
- Control fault: Define alarm states, local reset authority, manual operation and the conditions for returning to automatic mode.
- Obstruction: Set how the door reverses or stops, how the light grid is tested and how repeated obstructions are reported.
- Fire alarm: Coordinate the door response with the approved fire and life-safety strategy; do not assume that a generic fire signal should open every door.
- Communication failure: Establish what happens if the door controller loses a building-management, access-control or centralized-control link.
Steve Polak, National Business Development Manager at Premier Door Systems and DMF International, summarizes the commissioning risk: “A detail that’s often overlooked or left until commissioning is what happens to a door and its functionalities during a power cut or control fault. What should be coordinated between a high-speed door and cleanroom HVAC?
The HVAC designer should treat door cycles as disturbances to the pressure and airflow balance. Opening speed, open duration, leakage while closed, the volume of the airlock and the supply and extract arrangement all influence how quickly the room returns to its operating condition.

As Polak puts it: “In pressure-controlled areas, like clean rooms and sterile production areas, the closed-door seal is just one part of the performance picture. Opening speed and the time the room takes to recover after each cycle can matter just as much, so the door, ventilation and control strategy need to be considered together.”
Data to exchange with the HVAC team
- Clear opening width and height, door thickness and any threshold or bottom seal.
- Expected open time, close time, hold-open delays and maximum cycle frequency.
- Pressure setpoints and permitted differential across each closed door.
- Airflow direction, supply and extract rates, filtration arrangement and airlock volume.
- Target recovery time after a person, cart or forklift passes through.
- Alarm limits and the control response when pressure or ventilation is outside range.
The East African Community guideline search result describes a cascade airlock as having high pressure on one side and low pressure on the other. That document addresses non-sterile pharmaceutical dosage-form HVAC in its regional context; it should not be treated as a universal requirement for every pharmaceutical facility or jurisdiction. The project’s governing regulations and contamination-control strategy take precedence.
Installation and acceptance workflow
- Write the user requirement: Record classifications, pressure relationships, traffic, cleaning agents, environmental conditions, clear dimensions, cycle demand and required records.
- Request a configuration-specific submittal: Include curtain, frame, seals, controller, sensors, safety grid, activation devices, finishes, power and all interfaces.
- Review the layout: Check structural support, service clearances, floor level, drainage, adjacent equipment, sight lines and maintenance access.
- Approve the control narrative: Document normal access, restricted access, emergency egress, fire alarm, power loss, obstruction, sensor failure and communications loss.
- Coordinate HVAC: Model or otherwise verify pressure behavior, airflow, cycle timing and recovery requirements with the door sequence.
- Inspect installation: Verify materials, seals, frame alignment, panel travel, wiring, grounding, sensor coverage, labels and cleanable finishes.
- Commission interfaces: Test access control, interlock logic, alarms, building controls, emergency devices and status indication as an integrated system.
- Qualify performance: Run the agreed cleanroom, pressure, particle or recovery tests under defined operating conditions and retain the records.
- Handover: Provide drawings, software or parameter backups, maintenance instructions, cleaning limits, spare-parts information, training and change-control requirements.
Common specification mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming “high speed” equals cleanroom compliance: Treat speed as one input to exposure and recovery, not as a classification certificate.
- Copying a project example: The reported ISO 6 Efaflex project does not establish the rating of an RL3000. Match evidence to the exact model and build.
- Leaving interlock behavior until commissioning: Approve the control narrative with operations, engineering, fire safety and validation before equipment is programmed.
- Ignoring cleaning chemistry: Obtain material compatibility information for the actual detergents and disinfectants, including concentration and contact time.
- Using a generic sensor arrangement: Size radar, loops, push buttons and light-grid coverage for the real pedestrian and vehicle movements.
- Failing to define recovery: Give HVAC and validation teams a measurable recovery criterion and a cycle profile, rather than relying on the 1.5 m/sec headline speed.
- Overlooking maintenance access: A sealed cleanroom door still needs safe inspection, sensor testing, curtain replacement and controller servicing without creating contamination risk.
What evidence should a purchaser request from DMF?
Ask for current drawings and data for the exact opening, not only a general brochure. The package should identify the selected model, dimensions, materials, seals, controller, electrical requirements, sensors, safety devices, interfaces and environmental limits. Request any available test reports for leakage, pressure behavior, cleanability or classification, and ask which claims are design intent versus tested results.
For a regulated pharmaceutical project, align the submittal with the facility’s quality system. Define who approves the user requirement, design review, factory testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning, cleanroom qualification and change control. If the supplier cannot state a value, record it as not stated and establish an alternate verification method rather than filling the gap with the generic product-page specification.
Bottom line for the titled installation
The available evidence supports describing the DMF RL3000 as a rapid roll-door candidate associated by DMF with ISO 7/Grade C applications, with a published speed up to 1.5 m/sec and options for access, sensing and safety integration. It does not establish the classification, pressure performance, validation status or commissioning outcome of a particular pharmaceutical-company airlock. Approve the door only after the exact configuration is shown to work with the airlock sequence, HVAC recovery, cleaning program and life-safety strategy.
