Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Krishna, a revered Hindu deity. It is observed on the eighth day of the lunar month’s dark fortnight, but the month name and Gregorian date can differ by calendar convention and local practice. Fasting, prayer, singing, temple worship and a midnight observance are common, though no single set of customs applies everywhere.

The Government of India’s Incredible India festival guide describes it as falling on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha, the dark fortnight, in Shravan or Bhadrapada according to the Hindu calendar. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board describes the observance in Bhadrapada. These descriptions reflect differing calendar conventions; they are not a reason to treat one month name as universal.

When is Janmashtami?

The date follows the Hindu lunar calendar, so its Gregorian date changes each year. Calendar conventions and local observance practices can also affect which date a community observes. For a particular year and place, check with a local temple or Hindu calendar rather than relying on a fixed Gregorian date. The available sources do not establish a definitive date for every locality in 2026.

How do people celebrate Janmashtami?

Observances can take place at home and in temples. Common practices described by official sources include fasting, prayer, devotional singing, night vigils and worship at midnight. Krishna images may be decorated and placed in a cradle, and celebrations can include dramatic enactments of episodes from Krishna’s life.

Why is Janmashtami celebrated at midnight?
