Balon kata komik menampung dialog atau narasi sekaligus memberi petunjuk visual tentang siapa yang berbicara, bagaimana suara atau ujarannya terasa, dan kapan teks berfungsi sebagai narasi. Bentuk-bentuk berikut adalah konvensi praktis, bukan aturan universal: komikus dapat mengubah atau menggabungkannya sesuai kebutuhan cerita.
Apa yang disampaikan bentuk balon kata?
Balon kata membantu pembaca mengikuti teks dan gambar sebagai satu kesatuan. Dalam materi Seni Budaya kelas VIII, komik dijelaskan sebagai karya yang memadukan huruf dan gambar serta menyampaikan pesan secara singkat melalui kata dan gambar (materi Seni Budaya kelas VIII). Dalam praktiknya, bentuk balon bisa memberi petunjuk tentang sumber ujaran, kesan suara, susunan dialog, atau fungsi narasi. Arti tepatnya tetap bergantung pada konteks panel dan kebiasaan visual karya tersebut.

Memilih bentuk yang membantu cerita terbaca
Pilih bentuk berdasarkan informasi yang perlu diterima pembaca, bukan sekadar variasi dekoratif. Beberapa pertimbangan praktis:
- Siapa sumber ujarannya? Ekor pada balon dasar mengarahkan perhatian kepada tokoh; arah ekor yang menunjuk ke dalam dapat menandai sumber yang berada di luar gambar.
- Bagaimana ujarannya terdengar? Tepi bergerigi lazim dipakai untuk teriakan, garis putus-putus untuk bisikan, dan tepi bergelombang dapat menandakan kondisi emosional atau suara yang melemah.
- Bagaimana teks muat dalam panel? Balon vertikal dapat membantu saat ruang horizontal sempit, sementara multi-gelembung memecah ujaran menjadi bagian-bagian.
- Apakah teks itu dialog atau narasi? Balon seperti awan dapat menunjukkan pikiran atau mimpi; kotak persegi panjang dapat memisahkan narasi dari percakapan.
Jangan mengandalkan bentuk sendirian bila adegan berisiko membingungkan. Penempatan balon, urutan panel, gambar tokoh, dan isi teks turut membangun makna. Konvensi dapat berbeda antarkomik, sehingga konsistensi dalam satu cerita lebih berguna daripada menganggap satu bentuk memiliki arti yang mutlak.

Menggambar balon kata dalam komik
Materi Seni Budaya kelas VIII menyebut kertas, pena hitam, dan pensil warna sebagai media menggambar komik, tetapi bukan panduan khusus untuk desain balon atau rekomendasi alat tertentu (materi Seni Budaya kelas VIII). Untuk latihan, mulai dengan menggambar balon dasar dan ekornya, lalu coba variasi kontur untuk menunjukkan perbedaan suara atau fungsi.
- Tentukan dahulu apakah teks merupakan dialog, pikiran, mimpi, atau narasi.
- Letakkan balon agar sumber ujaran dan urutan membaca mudah dipahami.
- Sesuaikan bentuk dan arah ekor dengan ruang panel serta informasi yang ingin ditonjolkan.
- Periksa apakah tulisan terbaca dan apakah bentuk balon tetap jelas saat dilihat bersama gambar.
Pena hitam dapat digunakan untuk menggambar garis dan menulis teks, tetapi materi tersebut tidak menetapkan alat yang paling baik untuk lettering. Pensil warna disebut sebagai salah satu media gambar komik, bukan sebagai keharusan untuk setiap balon.
