Khai giảng is the opening ceremony for a new school year in Vietnam, as well as the wider welcome to students returning to school. The date most closely associated with it is 5 September. For 2026–2027, Hải Phòng’s education department has directed local schools to hold ceremonies that morning; that is local guidance, not confirmation of a nationwide schedule.
What does khai giảng mean?
Khai giảng means the opening of a school year. In Vietnam, it commonly refers to a school’s opening ceremony and the collective start-of-year welcome. The phrase Ngày hội toàn dân đưa trẻ đến trường—roughly, “the day for all people to bring children to school”—expresses the ceremony’s broader public significance.
The occasion is associated with 5 September. In remarks reported by the Government of Vietnam policy portal after the 2025 ceremony, Education Minister Nguyễn Kim Sơn called the date the education sector’s traditional day and a countrywide day for bringing children to school. The report connects that tradition to a letter Hồ Chí Minh sent to students in 1945, shortly after Vietnam’s declaration of independence. This is a government report of the minister’s remarks, not the original letter.

When is khai giảng for the 2026–2027 school year?
Hải Phòng’s Department of Education and Training published local guidance on 21 August 2026 directing schools in the city to hold the ceremony on the morning of 5 September 2026. It calls for ceremonies to be dignified but brief, meaningful and practical, safe and economical, suited to each school’s circumstances, and centered on students.
This document applies to Hải Phòng. It does not establish a nationwide 2026–2027 plan or confirm how every province will observe the date. The national association with 5 September is a useful reference, but a family seeking a particular school’s schedule should follow that school’s or local education authority’s announcement.
What happens at a khai giảng ceremony?
There is no single program that every school must follow. A 2025–2026 example from Hợp Hưng Primary School included welcoming guests and first-grade pupils, performances, introductions, the principal’s opening address, and a connection to the national online event. It illustrates one school’s program, not a required national template.
At the national level, the 5 September 2025 ceremony in Hanoi ran from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. and was broadcast on VTV1, with online connections to education institutions around the country. That event also marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Ministry of National Education. The anniversary and national broadcast made the 2025 format exceptional; they should not be assumed to recur every year.

How schools are asked to plan ceremonies
Hải Phòng’s 2026–2027 guidance emphasizes practical arrangements alongside the ceremony itself. It asks schools to plan for severe weather and attend to traffic, fire safety, sanitation, food safety, and student safety. It also stresses adapting the event to local circumstances and keeping it economical. These are directions in Hải Phòng’s local guidance, rather than a statement of a single nationwide program.

The Government of Vietnam policy portal’s report gives two different estimates, with different group labels. Its advance description says about 1.7 million teachers and nearly 30 million students; a later passage says 1.6 million teachers and education managers and more than 26 million pupils and students. The figures should be treated as separate estimates in that report, not combined or read as one definitive count.
