King’s Crown is a traditional pieced quilt block made from four crown-like flying-geese units surrounding a central square. It works in several finished sizes and is usually suitable for an advanced beginner or intermediate quilter. The key to a clean result is controlling the flying-geese points, using one complete size-specific cutting chart, and checking the orientation of every unit before assembly.

King’s Crown is a traditional pieced quilt block built from four crown-like flying-geese units arranged around a central square. The four directional points create the block’s characteristic crown shape, while corner squares complete the composition. It is usually approachable for an advanced beginner, although accurate points and consistent seam allowances become more demanding in smaller sizes.

What the King’s Crown block looks like

The block’s visual structure is easy to recognize once it is broken into parts:

  • one central square;
  • four flying-geese units, one on each side of the center;
  • four corner squares; and
  • background triangles that form the flying-geese units.

Each flying-geese unit has a large accent triangle pointing toward the center or away from it, depending on the layout and fabric placement, with two smaller background triangles completing the unit. Together, the four units suggest a crown on each side of the central square.

The name is not completely standardized. Historical pattern sources used “King’s Crown,” but quilt-block names were frequently reused, changed by newspapers and pattern publishers, or applied to similar designs. For that reason, identify the block by its geometry—not by the name alone. King’s Crown should not automatically be treated as the same design as King David’s Crown, Cross and Crown, or a separately published “King’s Crown Variation.”

How the block is constructed

The most commonly documented method is to make four flying-geese units first, then sew those units around a central square. This creates a manageable construction sequence and makes it possible to check the dimensions and orientation of each directional unit before the final assembly.

Basic construction order

  1. Choose a finished size and cutting chart. Do not combine measurements from different tutorials. A chart for an 8-inch block, 12-inch block, or 16-inch block may use different dimensions and methods.
  2. Cut the accent and background pieces accurately. The usual component set includes four large accent triangles, eight small background triangles, four corner squares, and one center square.
  3. Make the four flying-geese units. Join two small background triangles to each large accent triangle, following the selected pattern’s seam order.
  4. Check the units before assembly. Confirm that all four flying geese are the same size and that their points face in the intended directions.
  5. Add the units to the center square. Attach the flying-geese assemblies to opposite sides of the center, then add the remaining pieces and corner squares according to the layout.
  6. Press and square the block. Measure the unfinished block before trimming. It should be larger than the stated finished size by the seam allowance required by the pattern.

Some tutorials teach the block with the four-at-a-time flying-geese method instead. That method changes the cutting and sewing details, but not the recognizable King’s Crown structure. Follow one method from start to finish rather than substituting a four-at-a-time cut for a traditional one-at-a-time chart.

Documented sizes and measurements

King’s Crown is available in several finished sizes rather than one universal block dimension. Published examples include:

Finished size Documented use Important note
8 inches American Patchwork & Quilting version Uses four large accent triangles, eight small background triangles, four corner squares, and a center square.
9 inches Flying-geese tutorial version Uses a different size-specific cutting plan.
12 inches Several modern versions One documented chart uses a 6 1/2-inch center square, 3 1/2-inch corner squares, and flying-geese components made from 7 1/4-by-3 7/8-inch accent rectangles and 3 7/8-inch background squares.
16 inches Large block and video-tutorial versions One tutorial assembles a 16 1/2-inch unfinished block and trims it to 16 inches.

The 12-inch measurements above belong to that particular drafting method. They are not a universal King’s Crown formula and should not be used to resize an 8-inch or 16-inch pattern. Always distinguish between finished size—the measurement after the block is sewn into a quilt—and unfinished size—the measurement before it is joined to other blocks.

Seam allowance and pressing

Use a standard quarter-inch seam allowance unless your chosen pattern says otherwise. The documented 8-inch and 12-inch instructions use a quarter-inch allowance. A 16-inch video tutorial recommends a scant quarter-inch and then squares the unfinished block before it reaches its 16-inch finished measurement.

The exact pressing direction depends on the pattern. Pressing seams open can reduce bulk around the center, while pressing to one side may allow seams to nest during assembly. Whichever approach you use, keep it consistent and avoid pressing so aggressively that the bias edges stretch.

Accuracy tips for sharper crown points

The flying-geese points are the most likely part of the block to look uneven. A small error in each unit can become obvious when four units meet around the center.

  • Cut with a sharp blade. Inaccurate or distorted pieces make point matching difficult before sewing even begins.
  • Mark diagonal sewing lines carefully. If the method calls for corner triangles, use the pattern’s marking instructions rather than estimating the line by eye.
  • Keep the seam allowance consistent. A scant or generous quarter-inch changes the finished size of every flying-geese unit.
  • Protect the points. When sewing a seam that crosses a point, aim to leave the required seam allowance at the tip instead of sewing directly through it.
  • Press without stretching. Triangle edges can lie on the bias and may become wavy if pulled under the iron.
  • Measure each subunit. If one flying-geese unit is too large or too small, correct it before attaching the units to the center.
  • Lay out the complete block first. This is especially important with directional prints or multiple fabrics.
  • Trim only after checking orientation. Trimming can improve accuracy, but it cannot correct a unit sewn in the wrong direction.

A flying-geese ruler or other quilting ruler for accurate points can be a useful optional aid when trimming these units. It is not required: a regular rotary-cutting ruler and a reliable pattern can work well, provided the measurements and seam allowance are controlled.

Fabric and color planning

Contrast does much of the design work in King’s Crown. The crown points need enough value difference from the background to remain visible, especially when several blocks are set side by side.

Three practical approaches

  • High contrast: Use a dark or strongly patterned accent fabric against a light background for clearly defined crowns.
  • Two-color traditional styling: Historical instructions described yellow or two shades of yellow for the crown points with a contrasting center. This is a historical example, not a mandatory color scheme.
  • Scrappy controlled color: Use several coordinated prints for the points while keeping the background fabric consistent. Matching value is more important than matching every print exactly.

Before sewing, place all four flying-geese units and the center square on a design surface. Check whether the points read as one coordinated set. With directional fabric, rotate the pieces deliberately; do not assume that a printed motif will face the same way after every triangle is sewn.

Quilt layouts using King’s Crown blocks

The block can produce substantially different quilts depending on spacing, orientation, and value placement.

Block-to-block setting

Place the blocks directly beside one another for a dense, repeating design. Matching background values can cause the individual crowns to blend into larger shapes, while stronger contrast keeps each block distinct.

Sashing

Add fabric strips between the blocks to separate the crown motifs. Sashing gives the eye a rest and can make a small block feel more formal. The strip width is a design choice, but the sashing should be planned with the block’s finished measurement rather than the unfinished measurement.

Alternate plain squares

Plain squares the same finished size as the pieced block can be alternated with King’s Crown blocks. This reduces the amount of piecing and creates open areas for quilting or fabric contrast.

Rotated blocks

Rotating selected blocks 90 degrees changes the rhythm of the points. An alternating rotation can create a more directional arrangement, although the exact secondary effect depends on the colors and values used. Make a small paper or digital layout before committing to a full quilt.

How difficult is King’s Crown?

The block is generally a good advanced-beginner or intermediate project. The piecing units are repetitive, and the construction is easier to understand when treated as four identical flying-geese assemblies around a center. It becomes more demanding when:

  • the finished block is small;
  • the points must align precisely across many blocks;
  • several prints have different directional motifs;
  • the background and accent fabrics have similar values; or
  • the chosen method produces bias edges that require careful handling.

If this is your first flying-geese project, make one test unit from scrap fabric before cutting the final pieces. Use that sample to check your seam allowance, pressing method, and trimming procedure.

A brief history of the name

The strongest accessible evidence places King’s Crown in American quilt-pattern circulation by the early 1930s. Instructions appeared in the Kansas City Star in 1931, and the design was later documented in Carrie Hall and Rose Kretsinger’s 1935 book, The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt in America.

A June 19, 1934 Nancy Page newspaper pattern called the design “The King’s Crown” and described four crowns within one pieced block. Its reference to contemporary interest in the English monarchy explains the period naming context, but it does not prove that the newspaper invented the geometry or that the name represents the block’s original symbolism.

The International Quilt Study Center and Museum records a King’s Crown quilt made by an unknown maker circa 1880–1900. That early American example shows that the design and/or name is associated with an older quilt tradition, but the museum record does not establish a definitive designer, first publication, or single place of origin. The safest description is that King’s Crown is a traditional design documented in early American pattern circulation whose ultimate source remains uncertain.

King’s Crown variation and related patterns

Several designs use crown-related names. Geometry matters when comparing them.

King’s Crown Variation is a related design rather than automatically the same block. AccuQuilt’s documented 12-inch variation uses square, half-square-triangle, and triangle dies compatible with its GO! cutter system. Readers using that system should follow the variation’s own die list, cutting instructions, and finished-size directions.

A separate commercial project, Missouri Star Quilt Co.’s Fat 1/4 Focus quilt pattern, is described as a contemporary take on the classic King’s Crown block and includes lap, double, and throw sizes. It is best understood as a full-quilt interpretation, not as proof of the canonical single-block cutting plan.

Readers looking for a printable or physical King’s Crown quilt pattern should check the finished size, flying-geese method, seam allowance, and whether the instructions cover one block or an entire quilt. Because the name is used for more than one arrangement, the preview image and cutting chart are more reliable identifiers than the title alone.

A quilt block reference book can help when comparing historical names, published variations, and similar crown-themed designs. Use historical references to investigate the block’s changing names, but use a current pattern or cutting chart for construction measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What skill level is the King’s Crown quilt block?

King’s Crown is usually considered an advanced-beginner to intermediate quilt block. The repeated flying-geese units are straightforward, but accurate points, consistent quarter-inch seams, and careful orientation require practice.

What units make up a King’s Crown block?

The standard construction uses four flying-geese units arranged around a central square, with corner squares completing the block. Some tutorials use the four-at-a-time flying-geese method, so the cutting chart will vary.

What size is a King’s Crown quilt block?

No. Published examples include 8-inch, 9-inch, 12-inch, and 16-inch finished blocks. Use the cutting chart for the specific finished size you want rather than scaling measurements from another version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What fabrics and colors work best for King’s Crown?

Use enough value contrast that the crown points remain distinct from the background. Yellow-based historical examples exist, but solids, coordinated scraps, prints, and modern high-contrast palettes are all appropriate.

How can King’s Crown blocks be arranged in a quilt?

King’s Crown blocks can be placed directly together, separated with sashing, alternated with plain squares, or rotated 90 degrees in selected positions. The resulting secondary effect depends on the fabric values and layout.

The Bottom Line

King’s Crown is best understood as a four-flying-geese block surrounding a central square, not as a single universal cutting formula. Choose one documented size and method, keep the crown points high-contrast, and measure each unit before assembling the block.
