A giant Christmas mural installed above a restaurant on Riverside Walk in Kingston upon Thames was meant to evoke a crowded festive scene. Instead, viewers found warped faces, hybrid animals, malformed bodies and a snowman that looked less like a holiday decoration than an emissary from an AI-generated underworld.
The image became a November 2025 local and internet sensation before the landowners removed it following widespread ridicule and complaints. The mural was widely described as AI-generated, but the available reporting does not identify the specific AI system, artist, printer or production company behind it.

What the mural showed
From a distance, the large image reportedly read as a busy Christmas scene: a mass of people, animals and seasonal activity arranged in a festive setting. Up close, however, the details became difficult to explain as conventional illustration. Viewers and reporters pointed to faces that appeared distorted, bodies with incorrect anatomy, extra limbs, merged human-and-animal forms and objects that seemed to dissolve into one another.
The snowman attracted particular attention. Rather than presenting a simple, cheerful holiday character, it appeared to have abnormal facial features that helped fuel the online comparison with a scene from a nightmare or a work of Lovecraftian horror.

They do not, by themselves, prove exactly how the mural was made. The safest description is that it was apparently AI-generated or AI-attributed, with no confirmed model or production record identified in the reporting available for this article.
Where it was installed
The mural was displayed on Riverside Walk in Kingston upon Thames, southwest London, above or alongside Côte Brasserie and neighboring commercial premises. Reports variously described it as roughly 100 feet wide or more than 10 metres long, so its precise dimensions should be treated as reported estimates rather than an independently verified specification.

Its position was part of the reason the image drew so much attention. This was not a small illustration viewed briefly on a screen. It was a prominent installation above a busy commercial walkway, where pedestrians could inspect the enlarged details at close range.
Who was responsible?
The restaurant was reportedly not the party responsible for the artwork. Information relayed by The Independent and Futurism attributed the installation to the landlord or the owners of the commercial development, rather than to Côte Brasserie or Bill’s Kingston Restaurant.

The available accounts do not establish the exact legal owner, commissioning process, designer, image generator, contractor, printer or installer. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that Côte Brasserie commissioned the mural, or that a named AI artist or software company produced it.
The Bruegel explanation
According to coverage from Artnet and The Independent, the development owners described the image as a Christmas scene inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the sixteenth-century Flemish painter known for densely populated genre scenes.
That explanation adds some legitimate art-historical context. Bruegel’s crowded compositions can contain many simultaneous actions, unusual characters and moments of dark or grotesque humor. A strange-looking figure is not automatically evidence of a technical mistake.
But the Bruegel reference does not settle the controversy. It was reported as the owners’ explanation during a backlash in which many viewers interpreted the malformed faces, bodies and animals as uncontrolled generative imagery. Nor does invoking Bruegel establish who designed the image or what tools were used.

Mat Collishaw was also reportedly mentioned in connection with the mural, but that involvement was not confirmed. He should not be described as its artist.
Why the image looked like an AI failure
Generative image systems can produce convincing overall compositions while struggling with local relationships: the number and position of fingers, the connection between a head and a body, the boundary between an animal and a person, or the geometry of an object. A viewer may overlook those problems in a small image viewed for a second. They become much harder to hide when the image is printed or displayed at mural scale.
That is an inference from the mural’s reported appearance, not proof of its workflow. The producers may have generated, edited, composited or manually altered the image in ways that are not documented. Still, the incident illustrates a basic production risk: enlarging an image also enlarges every unresolved defect.
Why scale changed the result
- Small errors became landmarks. A malformed hand or face could become a feature that pedestrians actively searched for.
- The work had no natural crop. On a screen, an awkward region can be hidden outside the frame. A mural presents the whole composition as a public statement.
- Repeated figures invite comparison. In a crowded scene, viewers can immediately see when bodies, faces or limbs do not follow consistent visual rules.
- Public placement removes the creator’s control over viewing distance. People could see the broad festive image from afar and then inspect its failures up close.
A human review stage would not necessarily have made the image artistically successful, but it could have identified the most conspicuous anatomical and compositional problems before printing and installation. At this size, quality control is not a cosmetic final step; it is part of the artwork’s production.

Residents and online commenters reacted with a mixture of disbelief, mockery and fascination. The mural was variously compared with a nightmare, a scene from hell and “Lovecraftian horror.” The reactions focused less on whether the broad composition was festive than on the question of how such visible defects had passed approval for a highly conspicuous installation.
That attention also gave the mural an unintended second life. People were drawn to the site to see the details for themselves, turning an apparent embarrassment into a brief curiosity destination. The episode shows how quickly a public artwork can acquire a new meaning once viewers collectively identify a mismatch between its intended mood and its visible execution.

The contrast was especially effective for social media: the image promised warmth, abundance and holiday cheer, while close inspection supplied visual confusion and grotesquerie. The more people pointed out the errors, the more compelling it became for others to look for them.
When was it removed?
The landowners removed the mural after the backlash. The Independent reported its removal on November 21, 2025, and AOL likewise reported that it had been taken down by the commercial area’s owners.

The larger lesson for AI-assisted public art
The Kingston mural is a compact example of a problem that is easy to underestimate: generative imagery can look acceptable at the concept stage but fail when treated as finished artwork. A crowded scene is particularly demanding because it contains many faces, hands, bodies, animals and overlapping objects—the exact areas in which image-generation systems have historically required careful human checking.
For a public mural, a responsible workflow would normally include more than choosing an appealing thumbnail. It would involve checking the image at the intended display size, inspecting faces and limbs, verifying repeated forms, testing the composition from the distances at which pedestrians will see it, confirming rights and attribution, and obtaining approval from the person or organization responsible for the site.
None of those steps can be confirmed or ruled out in this case. The production records have not been publicly established. What can be said is that the final result exposed the cost of missing—or failing to catch—those problems: the mural’s technical defects became its dominant artistic meaning.

Bottom line
Kingston upon Thames’s enormous Christmas mural was presented as a festive, Bruegel-inspired scene, but its warped faces, hybrid creatures and misshapen snowman led many viewers to read it as uncontrolled AI imagery. The restaurant beneath it was reportedly not responsible; the landlord or development owners were. After becoming a viral object of ridicule and curiosity, the mural was removed in November 2025. The artist, AI system and full production chain remain unconfirmed.
