Choose the island’s lighting job before choosing a pendant. A prep island needs dependable task light, a seating island needs comfortable, low-glare light, and a mixed-use island usually needs both. As a starting point, hang pendants 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) from the finished countertop to the bottom of the fixture, then adjust for ceiling height, sightlines, fixture size and island length.

The 28-kitchen gallery below is an illustrative planning guide built from published sizing recommendations—not a claim that photographs establish universal measurements. Use each example to test whether your proposed count, spacing and fixture format fit the work and seating zones.

Start with the island’s lighting job

Pendant lighting is usually a secondary layer, not the only source of task illumination. Homes & Gardens describes recessed lighting as the primary source for preparation work, with pendants adding softer, focused light. Its guidance also says placement should respond to whether the island is used for prep, seating or dining. Read the full design guidance at Homes & Gardens’ kitchen-island guide.

Prep-focused islands

Prioritize even, shadow-free light over the cutting and mixing area. Keep pendants from sitting directly in your line of sight while you work, and pair them with recessed or other ceiling-mounted task fixtures on a separately controlled circuit.

Seating and dining islands

Visual comfort matters as much as brightness. Select shades or diffusers that hide the lamp from seated eye level, and place the fixtures so they do not block conversation across the island.

Mixed-use islands

Map the prep, serving and seating zones before marking electrical boxes. A linear fixture can cover a long work surface, while a small group of pendants can visually identify the social end; either approach still needs general task lighting.

Set the hanging height, then check sightlines

Measure from the finished countertop—not the subfloor or cabinet top—to the lowest point of the pendant. Philips Hue, Quoizel and Palecek each publish 30–36 inches as a starting range for island fixtures. See Philips Hue’s pendant size guide, Quoizel’s room-fixture guide and Palecek’s Lighting Positioning Guide.

For ceilings higher than 8 feet, Philips Hue suggests adding 3 inches for each additional foot. Treat that as a rule of thumb: a tall room may need a longer drop for proportion, but a bulky shade can make the same drop feel lower. Stand at the island and check the sightline of the tallest household member, then sit at each stool and verify that the fixture does not interrupt eye contact.

Choose count, spacing and fixture scale

There is no single pendant-count formula. Different guides describe different reference points, so keep each method intact rather than averaging them.

Decision Published recommendation How to use it
Number by island length Philips Hue: two pendants for a 5–6-foot island; two or three for 7–9 feet; three or a long linear fixture at 10 feet or more. Use as a count range, then place fixtures over the actual work and seating zones.
Pendant diameter Philips Hue offers a rule of thumb of approximately island width divided by five. Measure your island width and use the result as a starting diameter, not a mandatory size.
Combined diameter Quoizel suggests the combined diameters of multiple pendants equal about one-third to one-half of island length. Add the individual diameters before comparing with island length.
Center-to-center spacing Philips Hue: 24–36 inches between pendant centers. Apply only when you are laying out electrical-box centers.
Fixture-edge spacing Quoizel: 24–30 inches between fixture edges; Palecek: at least 24–30 inches between the widest parts. These are edge clearances, not center-to-center measurements.
End clearances Philips Hue: 12 inches from island edge to first pendant; Quoizel: 6–12 inches from each edge. Center the grouping visually after allowing for shade width and any sink or cooktop.

Because the guides define spacing differently, do not combine a center-to-center number with an edge-clearance number as though they were the same rule. Draw the fixture outlines to scale on the island plan and check both the physical gaps and the visual balance.

When a linear fixture is the better fit

Quoizel recommends a linear chandelier measuring one-half to two-thirds of the island length; Palecek gives about two-thirds. Quoizel also suggests leaving 6–12 inches at each end. On an extra-long island, Quoizel notes that two linear fixtures may balance the surface better than one very long fitting. These are proportion guides, so shift the fixture to align with the usable work area rather than an empty overhang.

Multiple pendants create separate pools of light and can suit a broken-up prep-and-seating plan. A linear fixture gives a continuous visual line and often reduces the number of ceiling boxes. Compare the fixture’s physical length, shade opacity and lamp output—not just the silhouette shown in a photograph.

Use controls to change the mood without losing task light

Homes & Gardens recommends separate circuits and dimming so the island can move from brighter preparation light to a softer setting for meals or entertaining. Put pendants and recessed task fixtures on independently dimmable controls where wiring allows. Confirm that every lamp, driver and dimmer is compatible; otherwise low settings can produce flicker or an audible buzz.

28 kitchen layouts to test your plan against

These 28 examples are planning scenarios that apply the published ranges to common island jobs. They are not measured claims about individual photographed kitchens. For each, mark the island length, width, ceiling height, work zones and sightlines on your own plan.

1. Five-foot prep island

Use two compact pendants, the Philips Hue count for a 5–6-foot island. Keep the grouping centered over the prep zone and retain recessed task light for the knife-and-board area.

2. Six-foot island with one sink

Two pendants can straddle the sink and landing space. Check that neither shade sits directly over a faucet sightline or creates a reflected hotspot in the sink.

3. Five-foot breakfast bar

Choose two diffused pendants aimed at seated comfort. Align their centers with stool positions rather than the cabinet doors below.

4. Six-foot island, mixed use

Place two pendants over the social half and let recessed lighting cover prep. This prevents a decorative grouping from carrying the entire task load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Seven-foot prep island

Two larger pendants may fit the 7–9-foot range if their combined diameters remain visually subordinate to the island. Verify the edge gaps after drawing actual shade outlines.

6. Eight-foot island with cooktop

Three smaller pendants can distribute light around the cooktop, but avoid placing a shade where steam, heat or a hood conflicts with the fixture.

7. Nine-foot island with stools at one end

Use two pendants over the work area and reserve the seating end for clear sightlines, or use three evenly scaled fixtures if the seating is integrated across the length.

8. Seven-foot dining island

A short linear fixture can visually unify the dining surface. Keep its length within the one-half-to-two-thirds proportion suggested for linear fittings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Eight-foot prep-and-serve island

Three modest pendants can mark prep, plating and serving zones. Separate them from the room’s general light so dimming does not leave the worktop dark.

10. Nine-foot island in an eight-foot room

Start near the 30–36-inch countertop clearance and prioritize head clearance. A shallow shade may preserve sightlines better than a deep drum at the same drop.

11. Seven-foot island under a nine-foot ceiling

Apply Philips Hue’s 3-inch-per-foot-above-8-feet rule as a starting adjustment, then test with a temporary hanging cord before finalizing the canopy height.

12. Eight-foot island with a tall household

Raise the fixture only as far as sightlines require; excessive height can weaken the light on the worktop. Use dimmable task lighting to maintain usable brightness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Nine-foot island with a low ceiling beam

Measure from the finished counter to the beam and to the fixture separately. A linear fitting may avoid a collision that three drops would create.

14. Ten-foot prep island

Philips Hue lists three pendants or a long linear fixture at 10 feet or more. Select the option that keeps light over the actual preparation run, not over a distant overhang.

15. Ten-foot island with seating centered

A linear fixture covering roughly one-half to two-thirds of the length can keep the seating zone visually coherent. Leave the recommended end clearance before centering the fitting.

16. Eleven-foot mixed-use island

Two linear fixtures may balance the length better than one oversized piece, an option Quoizel specifically notes for extra-long islands. Coordinate their gaps with stool and prep locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

17. Twelve-foot island with prep sink

Three pendants can cover the sink, landing and serving areas, provided fixture-edge gaps remain comfortable. Keep a separate ceiling task layer for shadow control.

18. Ten-foot island with a narrow width

Island length alone does not determine diameter. Use the island-width-divided-by-five heuristic to prevent shades from overwhelming a shallow surface.

19. Twelve-foot island with generous width

Larger pendants may be proportionate when width supports them, but compare the combined diameters with Quoizel’s one-third-to-one-half-of-length guide.

20. Eight-foot island, all seating

Favor glare control and conversation sightlines over maximum lumen output. Put bright task sources elsewhere and dim the pendants for meals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

21. Eight-foot island, mostly chopping

Use pendants as focused accents while recessed fixtures provide the primary work light. Select shades that do not cast a hard shadow across the cutting board.

22. Nine-foot island with stools only at one end

Bias the pendant grouping toward the stools if that is the visual anchor, but keep enough coverage over the prep section to avoid a dark transition.

23. Seven-foot island with a waterfall edge

Check the fixture’s end clearance against the visible stone return, not just the cabinet box. A centered pair usually reads more balanced than lights aligned to hidden supports.

24. Ten-foot island with an overhang

Measure the usable countertop line and the overhang separately. Place light over where people work or sit, rather than automatically centering on the full cabinet length.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

25. Eleven-foot island with a ceiling junction box off-center

Use a canopy or adjustable mounting system only if it is rated for the fixture. Otherwise, a pair of linear fixtures can distribute light without forcing one box to serve an awkward center.

26. Twelve-foot island in a high-ceiling room

Apply the high-ceiling adjustment cautiously and verify the bottom of each fixture from standing and seated positions. Long drops can become a visual barrier even when mathematically proportionate.

27. Six-foot island beside tall cabinetry

Check the cabinet run from every approach. Compact pendants with controlled shades can preserve a clear corridor where a wide fixture would feel crowded.

28. Nine-foot island used for prep, homework and dining

Choose a dimmable linear or three-pendant layout that can operate at different levels. Keep general and task circuits independent so homework light does not force dining brightness.

Installation sequence that prevents expensive rework

  1. Draw the island to scale. Record finished length, width, overhangs, sink or cooktop locations, stool centers and ceiling obstacles.
  2. Classify each zone. Label prep, serving, seating and circulation areas; decide which ceiling or under-cabinet fixtures provide primary task light.
  3. Select a format. Compare a pendant group with a linear fixture using the length and diameter guidance above.
  4. Mark temporary centers. Use painter’s tape or a suspended cord at the proposed locations. Check edge gaps, center spacing, head clearance and seated sightlines.
  5. Set the drop. Measure to the fixture’s lowest point from the finished counter, then apply any ceiling-height adjustment and account for the shade’s physical depth.
  6. Confirm electrical controls. Assign pendants and task lighting to separate dimmable circuits where practical, and verify dimmer compatibility with the lamps or LED drivers.
  7. Have the final installation inspected. A qualified electrician should confirm box support, wiring, clearances and local-code requirements before energizing the fixtures.

Common sizing mistakes and fixes

  • Using pendants as the only task light: Add a dedicated recessed or equivalent task layer.
  • Mixing spacing definitions: Decide whether your layout uses center-to-center or fixture-edge measurements before marking boxes.
  • Centering on cabinets instead of use: Shift the grouping toward the prep or seating zone that actually needs light.
  • Ignoring ceiling height: Test a temporary drop and inspect it from standing and seated positions.
  • Choosing by image alone: Compare the island’s real width, fixture diameter, shade opacity and sightlines; photographs rarely reveal all of them.
  • Skipping dimming: Separate circuits and compatible dimmers let one installation serve both preparation and dining.

A practical decision rule

Measure the island, identify its dominant use, choose pendant or linear coverage, and then validate height and spacing in the room. The published numbers are starting points: the successful layout is the one that lights the work, keeps faces visible, clears heads and looks proportionate from every approach.
