Its soft surface contains sensors that detect key presses, nearby hands, pressure, stretch, and other gestures. A microprocessor converts those readings into MIDI messages that music software can map to notes or sound controls. MIT Media Lab describes it as a research prototype; the available sources do not establish that it is sold as a finished commercial instrument.

What KnittedKeyboard II is
The prototype brings the familiar pattern of piano keys to a seamless knitted surface. MIT Media Lab says it was digitally knitted using intarsia and interlock patterning, combining electrically conductive and thermoplastic functional fibers with polyester. In other words, the textile is not just a cover: its material and construction are part of the instrument’s sensing system.
The project describes the surface as foldable and rollable, and explores the possibility of wearing it. Those are design qualities of the prototype, not evidence of a tested durability rating or a commercial wearable product. MIT’s gallery credits Irmandy Wicaksono as developer and Mike Hao Jiang as demonstrator. MIT Media Lab project overview · MIT Media Lab gallery

How the textile senses touch and gestures
KnittedKeyboard II combines capacitive and piezoresistive sensing. According to the project overview, each key acts as an electrode that is charged and discharged in sequence. A hand near a key disturbs its electric field, enabling proximity and touch sensing; the system also uses those readings to calculate strike velocity. Piezoresistive layers beneath the surface measure pressure and stretch.
- Contact and key presses: touching or pressing the piano-patterned areas can trigger notes.
- Proximity: the capacitive sensing can respond to a hand near the textile, so some interaction need not begin with contact.
- Pressure and stretch: the underlying piezoresistive layers detect changes as the material is pressed or deformed.
- Other described gestures: the project demonstrates waving, hovering, squeezing, pulling, stretching, and twisting the textile.
These are capabilities described by the project, not independent performance measurements. The available project information does not give a sensing range, latency, accuracy, or durability figure.

How gestures become sound
A central microprocessor converts sensor readings into MIDI messages. MIDI carries musical events and control data; it does not itself produce the sound. The messages can be routed to audio software, where a musician can map them to notes, channels, or sound parameters.
MIT’s description names Ableton Live and Max/MSP as examples of software for mapping the output. Possible targets include filter resonance, frequency, glide, reverb, amplification, distortion, and pitch bend. That means a player might use a press to play a note and a stretch or squeeze to alter a sound parameter, depending on how the software mapping is configured. The project presents these as possible mappings rather than a fixed preset or a guaranteed setup.

What makes it different from a rigid MIDI keyboard
| Aspect | KnittedKeyboard II | Conventional rigid MIDI keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Playing surface | Five-octave piano-patterned textile, described as foldable and rollable by MIT Media Lab | Rigid keys; construction varies by instrument |
| Interaction described | Key presses plus proximity, pressure, stretch, and fabric gestures | Typically centered on pressing keys; other controls depend on the model |
| Sound workflow | Sensor data becomes MIDI for software mapping | MIDI workflows vary; the project does not provide a direct model-to-model comparison |
| Availability | Described in the cited sources as a research prototype; retail availability is not established | Varies by product |
The meaningful distinction is the interaction surface: KnittedKeyboard II treats deformation and movement of the fabric as possible musical input, rather than limiting expression to a rigid key mechanism. The sources do not establish comparative performance, reliability, or ease of use against commercial controllers.

Research context and availability
KnittedKeyboard II belongs to a line of work on electronic textile musical controllers. MIT Media Lab’s publication listing records Irmandy Wicaksono and Joseph A. Paradiso’s paper “KnittedKeyboard: Digital Knitting of Electronic Textile Musical Controllers,” presented at the 2020 New Interfaces for Musical Expression conference, as well as their earlier “FabricKeyboard” paper from 2017. MIT also identifies “Fabric of Time and Space” as a piece written to demonstrate KnittedKeyboard II’s multidimensional expressiveness. MIT Media Lab publication listing

Could conductive yarn help you make one?
Conductive yarn is relevant to personal experiments with electronic textiles because the prototype uses electrically conductive fibers. It is only a material category, not a compatible accessory or a shortcut to reproducing KnittedKeyboard II: the instrument also depends on its textile construction, sensing layers, electronics, and software workflow. The cited sources do not identify a specific yarn or provide a build guide.
