Krita 5.2.16 is a bug-fix release published on February 25, 2026. Its release announcement addresses saving problems involving HEIF, HEIC, and AVIF files; a later Krita report also identifies fixes for some HEIF files that did not load properly and Move Tool shortcuts that did not work until the canvas was clicked. As of October 7, 2026, Krita’s official download page lists 5.3.4, released September 15, 2026, as the current release.

What is Krita 5.2.16?
Krita 5.2.16 is a hotfix in the Krita 5.2 series, not a major feature release. The project published it while preparing Krita 5.3.

The release announcement says the previous 5.2 version had problems saving HEIF, HEIC, and AVIF files. A later official development report identifies two regression fixes in 5.2.16: some HEIF files that did not load properly, and Move Tool movement shortcuts that did not work until the user clicked the canvas. These notes do not promise that every issue involving those formats, codecs, or workflows is solved.

Choose Krita 5.2.16 when:
- You have one of the documented HEIF loading or Move Tool shortcut problems.

Installation and compatibility cautions
The 5.2.16 announcement does not provide a complete, version-specific compatibility matrix for every operating system and hardware configuration. It notes that minimum Linux distribution and macOS versions may vary by release. Do not treat requirements on Krita’s current download page as proof of the requirements for 5.2.16.
The portable Windows ZIP can run from an extracted folder without replacing an installed copy, but it shares settings and custom resources with the regular installation. Back up important settings and resources before testing versions that may use the same profile.
On Linux, the announcement warns that some AppImageLauncher versions may conflict with recent AppImage runtime updates. If the AppImage does not launch, consult the release notes and your distribution’s guidance.
On Android, choose the package for the device’s architecture and remember that Krita on Android is beta and tablet-only.

Should you upgrade from an earlier Krita 5.2 release?
Consider 5.2.16 if you encounter one of the documented regressions or need that release for compatibility. If your reason for upgrading is simply to install Krita today, check the official download page for the current version instead.
