Krita 5.3.1 is a free, open-source painting program released on March 31, 2026. The official download page lists Krita 5.3.4, released September 15, 2026, as the current version; use it for a normal new installation. If you specifically need 5.3.1, get its files through the official release page or linked KDE archive.

Windows: installer or portable ZIP?
Installer
- Download krita-x64-5.3.1-setup.exe from the official release page or linked archive.
- Run the installer and follow the setup prompts.
- Launch Krita from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
The Windows release is 64-bit only. If the installer will not run, confirm that Windows is 64-bit and that the download completed properly. Do not download replacement DLL files from random websites.
Portable ZIP
Download krita-x64-5.3.1.zip, extract it to a folder, and launch Krita from that folder. This can run without changing the installed version, but the portable and regular installations share settings and custom resources.

Linux: run the AppImage
Download krita-5.3.1-x86_64.AppImage. If needed, enable the file manager’s option to allow executing the file as a program, or launch it from a terminal:
- Make the file executable using your system’s file manager or terminal.
- Launch the AppImage directly.
- If it fails, check the error and try without AppImageLauncher, which may be incompatible with some newer AppImage runtimes.
macOS: install the signed DMG
- Open krita-5.3.1-signed.dmg.
- Drag Krita into the Applications folder.
- Eject the disk image and open Krita from Applications.
The current Krita download page lists macOS 10.15 as the supported minimum, but requirements can change between releases. Check the official pages for the package’s compatibility before installing. If macOS blocks the app, confirm that it came from an official source and follow the system security prompt; do not disable Gatekeeper globally.

Android and Chromebook downloads
Krita for Android is beta software intended for tablets and Chromebooks, not ordinary Android phones. The 5.3.1 release lists APKs for 64-bit Intel, 64-bit Arm, and 32-bit Arm. Check the official Android listing for the right architecture and current applicable build: the official release archive identifies 5.3.1.1 as an Android-only fix released April 8, 2026.
What Krita 5.3.1 fixed
The release mainly addressed a slowdown affecting Windows users when some applications queried running applications’ accessibility features. The announcement also lists fixes for Android canvas panning and stylus behavior, the mutator shortcut, Wayland drag-and-drop, canvas-resize units, and other issues.

Krita 5.3.1 versus the current version

Is Krita really free?
Yes. Krita is free and open source under the GNU GPL v3. Its official download page also lists paid store versions for Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Mac App Store. Store fees are deducted before proceeds support Krita development. Store availability and terms vary; you do not need a paid store edition to use the free official download.
System requirements and drawing tablets
Krita’s download page lists Windows 8.1 or higher, macOS 10.15, or Linux; 4 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended; and OpenGL 3.0 or higher or Direct3D 11. It says any graphics tablet compatible with the operating system is supported. Requirements can change, so check the current page for the specific release.
Verify the download
- Download from Krita’s official release or download page, or its linked KDE archive.
- Open the archive’s Details view to find the published hashes.
- Calculate the downloaded file’s hash and compare it with the official value.
The 5.3.1 release announcement says the Linux AppImage and source tarballs are signed, with signatures provided as .sig files. Do not trust a hash copied from an unverified mirror.

Common problems
The Windows installer will not run
Confirm that you have 64-bit Windows and the correct installer file, then try downloading again from an official source. Krita 5.3.1 has no 32-bit Windows build.
The portable copy has old brushes or settings
This is expected: the portable ZIP shares settings and custom resources with the regular installation.

The Linux AppImage does nothing
Make sure the file is executable and launch it directly. If AppImageLauncher is installed, try bypassing it.
Android says the APK is incompatible
Check the device architecture and choose the matching APK. Also check the official Android listing for a later applicable build, including 5.3.1.1.

Does Krita work on iPad?
The official download information does not list iPad or iPhone support. The macOS DMG is for macOS, not iPadOS.
